I have a question that is totally unrelated to the luncheon but is something that I have long been curious about: What font was used for the CDC logo? Odd perhaps, but can anyone enlighten me? ========================================================= September 13, 2011 Pat, I have rotator cuff and carpal tunnel surgery on 09/23/11 on my right arm, so I probably won’t be at the Super Lunch, and will be out of circulation for 6-8 weeks after that. Dave (Yunker) ========================================================= September 6, 2011 My name is Bill Collette, (William C Collette) I worked at CDC from 1963 to 1990. We just returned to Sun City after 2 1/2 months on the road, so I won't be attending this year. This summer I got 2 items off my so called "bucket list". We spent time in Colorado to drive to the top of Pike's Peak and drive the TRR in Rocky Mount. Nat'l park. Also went to Milwaukee and Chicago to visit grand-daughters and friends. And this was the year to celebrate my 50th HS reunion in Pelican Rapids, so we spent sometime in MN. I'll be thinking about all of you and it's fun to see the pictures after the occasion has happened. Later! Have talked about moving out of CA, but as we still have a kid in college here, are waiting until she is finished to move somewhere else. Probably Washington or Oregon. See you at the lunch. Rich (Otto) ========================================================= September 2, 2011 Hello Pat I have the super lunch on my calendar. I will be unable to make it this year. I know everyone will have fun. Hopefully I will be able to make the 2012 gathering. All is well here in Florida.

========================================================= August 25, 2011 Hi Pat. Peggy and I are doing well. We are still full time RV’ers, but don’t travel as much as we used to. We spend most of our time in either Chico, CA or in Lake Havasu City, AZ (winter). We’ve been in 49 states since we started full timing 9 years ago and still enjoy it a lot. We belong to an RV club in Chico and have a great social life with them. I’d like to make it to the next Super Lunch, but don’t have any travel plans that include MN at this time. Say hi to everyone for me. It’s really great seeing the pictures you put on the web. My problem is I don’t recognize many of the people anymore, so when you can supply names, I really appreciate it. Dick (Cary) ========================================================= July 28, 2011 Yesterday, after a couple of day feeling chest tightness when I was working outside or walking, Sharon and I decided it would be a good time to check out cardiologists here at home. This situation may not wait until we return to Arizona in the fall. So, we went over the Eastside Cardiology center, it is close, about 20 minutes away, to see if we could meet a plumber (cardiologist who does cardiac catherization procedures). They said they could make an appointment for next week, Sharon said, "He's having pain now when he walks." The scheduler said, "Let me go check with Dr. Kim." Dr. Kim said he would work us in. They gave us a stack of forms to fill out, and before we could start, they called us back. Well, to make a longer story short, the doctor asked several questions, and immediately recommended that I check into the hospital for an angiogram. We said OK. Three hours later I was in a CCU room in recovery. Then out of the hospital by 10:00 the next morning and home for a nap in a comfortable chair. So I now have three stents, in the same spot, that are sandwiched in together. This stent is a medicated stent, a different brand than the second medicated stent. We hope this will work and not clog up like the other two. I was unlucky enough to fall in the low 5% chance of this happening. Prior to leaving, we asked for a DVD of the procedure. If you are interested there is a PDF attachment. While the DVD has special software for viewing. I printed four views from the 25 short videos on the DVD to explain what happens. The pictures are a stop action view. The real time shows the heart moving to pump blood.

The first two years were at the Strutwear Building, and the rest at Arden Hills. I plan to be there for the September 30th, 2011 Control Data Super Lunch. I was sorry to hear about George (Briggs) dying, he was a good friend but I lost contact with him years ago. I hope I can make it to the lunch this year.. Dave (Thompson) ========================================================= June 7, 2011 Hi Pat , , , an old 3800 still hanging around. The Smithsonian Museum has two display facilities - - the National Mall building in Washington, D.C. and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. The Udar-Hazy Center has a 3800 from Sunnyvale on display.

The links below will get you to the exact page. CDC 3800 Computer: http://www.nasm.si.edu/collections/artifact.cfm?id=A19930082000 CDC 3800 Plaque: http://www.nasm.si.edu/collections/artifact.cfm?id=A19930084000 Don Welter ========================================================= June 8, 2011

These may be the two 3800's that the Air Force was still using out here long after they should have been replaced. I got a call from a sales man that the Air Force wanted a larger memory and more reliability and had gone to Ampex. The original memory was a 6600 module. I came out here with the sales man and convinced them that Ampex couldn't meet the speed requirement. When I got back we found a way to mount 4 170 semiconductor memory modules in the space of a 6600 module. That is four times the density. Our military division knew the AirForce had more money than CDC could legally charge and they wanted all the money they could get. We can't charge more than what we charged our customers so our military division designed a whole new system. (Pure as the driven snow).

Hi Pat, I plan to retire the end of this month so please update the super lunch mail list. [email protected] Thanks, Roger (Miller) ========================================================= May 27, 2011 Hello Patrick, Thanks for you fast response. Just a little bit of background. 3 of us are analysts, one person (Walter Vsetecka) used to be sales manager. I worked for CD Austria from 1968 to 1995 and spent about two years of my life at Arden Hills special software development and was additionally involved in a lot of benchmark activity. So I might know people from these areas. One question arised within our group: Is Anneke Den Heijer on your list? Last I know is that she is married. As we all know her from BM Lab, it would be nice if we could contact her before visiting the US. Another things (for your links page): There is as Swiss CDC page http://www.laendli4.ch/ErnaCDC/cdcstart.htm which again contains links to other countries. The Austrian link is: http://www.laendli4.ch/ErnaCDC/seiteoesterreich.htm and contains an email contact (me). Regards Heinz (Ringlhofer) = = = = = = = = = = People I probably know (looking at your notes): Brian Roth Dave Thompson (if he worked at Benchmark Lab) Bob Horton Best regards, Heinz Ringlhofer =========================================================

Regards, Heinz Ringlhofer [email protected] ========================================================= May 24, 2011 Hi Pat: Been a while since we talked. Thought I would check to see if you are still up and around. It seems like every time I look at the paper I see another person that I know passed away Enough of this morbid talk. I have been getting into shooting the last few years and shoot in the pistol league every Thursday eve. Steve & I went to a gun show Sunday and I bought another pistol. I have quite a collection of guns, but it seems like I don't find enough time to shoot all of them I purchased a TAURUS JUDGE pistol for home defense. It is a 5 shot revolver that can shoot colt 45 ammo or 410 shotgun shells. I keep pretty busy going to the YMCA three days a week, try to go pistol shooting a couple times a week, and then there is spending time with the wife, kids, grandkids, shopping, etc., etc. Where did we ever find time to go to work? Take care-say hi to Patty and one of these days we should get together for breakfast or lunch. Bob (Taylor) ========================================================= May 19, 2011 Pat, If anyone of the group wants any CDC parts for memories, I'm scrapping out all my old CDC equipment! Cyber 175, Cyber 8XX, Controllers, Printers, Card Punches (yes 415) and other stuff. If they want something I can bring it to the lunch for them or they can pick it up with a SEMI! ========================================================= April 25, 2011 Hey, I received photos of my daughter's back yard the other day -- with snow everywhere! What's happening with snow so late in the year? We have had three days in a row without rain. That's the first time that's happened since November I believe. Rain forecast today though! We'll be in the Cities in early June for most of the month and look forward to catching up with you. Cheers, Tony (Wilson) ========================================================= April 19, 2011 Hey PRJ, Yes we are still in one piece. Much better shape than those north of us and south of us. We had one tornado track past us to the northwest that travelled from Sanford, NC (the Lowes store that made the national news) up to just southeast (2-3 blocks) of the capital building and governor's mansion in Raleigh (took a number of old Raleigh homes apart and Shaw College) then up into northeast Raleigh where the trailer park got wiped, along with a number of home subdivisons. That was about 10 miles away. A second tornado tracked along the Interstate 95 route and hit southeastern edge of Smithfield, NC, along with other small towns along Interstate 95. That was about 10 miles south of us. Plus, they had many more tornados touching down in our area and throughout Eastern NC. But, we are now back in sunny and warm (80's) weather. Everything is green. Have cut my grass twice already (and weeds). The daffodils and tulips have lost their blossoms and azaleas are currently blooming. Glad to live here. Do not miss the long snowy winters of the north. We are flying into Mpls for a long weekend on May 5th for one of Mary Ann's cousin's kid's wedding. I found a frequent flyer seat on Delta from RDU to MSP, and got a seat for Mary Ann for about $300. Her sister will be picking us up, and then we will be staying with them. Fly back on Monday, 5/9/11. So, don't expect to have any free time to see you. Our current plans for a longer trip to Minnesota, depending on gas prices, is to do a big loop trip in the RV in September, October. Head to Mpls the last week of September so I can make the CDC Lunch, then we will travel down through Iowa to my son's in Republic, MO, then home from there. We want to see our grandkids in Republic doing their fall sports. Past years we visited them in summer. My son and his family surprised us at Christmas by sneaking in Christmas Eve while were were at church (my daughter new they were coming but kept the secret well). They only stayed a couple days and headed home the day after Christmas because of the bad snow storm that was coming in. They did make it home in two days without any accidents. But, we all (but 2 out of 15) came down with a major intestinal virus the day after Christmas. We think that our youngest grandson (6 month old adopted) picked it up on their trip up for Christmas from Florida.

My missionary daughter and family are now back in India. Don't expect them to come back to the states for about 3 years. So, that is about it from us here in NC. Hope you and all your family are doing well. See you this fall, if not sooner. Bob (Horton) ========================================================= April 18, 2011 Ok, I never said I was good at replying in a timely manner - I'll blame it on the lousy weather. We had so much snow that it appeared that Spring would never get here. We had more snow yesterday - woke up to 3 inches of very heavy snow on everything. Most of it is gone now. The winter before we moved here was the last winter of a 10-year stretch of very mild winters. I hope there will not be a 10 year stretch of bad winters. If you guys are looking for a different path to/from Denver, you might want to consider heading this way. I don't know how much experience you've had in really small towns, but it would be an experience. The key seems to be to master "the stare". That's what happens when someone new walks into a restaurant. It still creeps me out, but it's better than it used to be - plus our favorite restaurant closed so we don't get out that much any more. Clayton is getting read to start the outside remodeling, I'm looking at being done with work the end of this year, and we're up to nine grandkids by now. Amazingly, life is good. Take care and have safe travels.....sidm (Sue Miller) ========================================================= March 30, 2011 Been a long time since having any contact with you. Hope things are well. I am retired on a small ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas raising sheep. Talk about a career change. Give regards to our mutual friends. I discovered you on the SuperLunch site. Thanks very much. Jim Donaldson 651/698-8983 (Added to database 03/23/11) ========================================================= March 6, 2011 Hello, I discovered the CDC Super Lunch info site while doing a search for Duane Sudman a CDC/MPI employee who worked in Rapid City in the 1980's. I know Duane was in Minneapolis in the 1960's too, and I'm curious if he is still around? Also I worked at CDC/MPI in the late 70's/Early 80's and am curious on the scope of people attending the Super Lunch in 2011. Thanks, Martin Hill ([email protected]) = = = = = March 12, 2011 Pat, Nice hearing more from you. I asked you about Duane Sudman, and if you google CDC Photos, Photo 029 shows Duane at a Terminal of the 1000th System, possibly at CDC ARHOPS, where you worked. Duane also worked at MPI Rapid City. I hired on with CDC/MPI in 1979 so you are a bit Senior to me, however, I loved CDC and worked at MPI in Bloomington as a QA Engineer on 40/80 MB Drives, then to CDC Microcircuits as an Apps Eng. In 1982 I went to work for Fairchild in Sales of Test Equip., and called on CDC Divisions and learned the company. Always wanted to meet Bill Norris, never did, but met a lot of Engineers, Directors and VP's, At Fairchild I knew a guy named Jim Schraith who went to work at Compaq as VP & GM North American Ops. Perhaps you knew of him. Currently I work for 2nd Wind Exercise as a Fitness Consultant in Edina, 2 blocks from Fuddruckers where the CDC Super Lunch will be in Sept. Hope to meet you then. Keep in touch,

You may not know Gordy but he worked on SCOPE 2 and NOS/VE amongst other things and I have known him since February 1969. I stay with him in Maui on my way around the world. I copied him on the obituary of Ed Michehl (back in July but there was a follow up from Lynda Whitely lately) and he asked to be kept informed if possible of events relating to the Hills. He is a good friend of Roger Miller who you do know. Cheers, Tony (Wilson) ========================================================= December 14, 2010 Hi Pat, I ran into Chuck Horton last week. Hello Patrick - I am answering your e-mail for Doug (Johnston). He has had colon surgery and is still in the hospital. The surgery took place last Monday, (Nov 15th). They removed a good part of his colon. The lymph nodes didn't show any cancer so he will not have to go through chemo. Right now they are waiting for his stomach to restart itself. His spirits are good and he is anxious to get home and sleep in his own bed. I will print your e-mail and take it to the hospital (Regions). Thanks for the note Mary Jean Johnston. ========================================================= November 19, 2010

WoW!! There are names on there that I hadn't thought about in decades. I have seen a few even outside the Superlunch, but not for a few years now. Thanks to Vic for getting these to you and thanks to you for making them available. They bring back a lot of old memories.

======================================================== October 25, 2010 Hi, Pat. I'd been working at ARHOPS for 5 years in 1979. You'd think some of these names (WATS my line) would ring bells but they don't. That's a bit embarrassing. I might simply have a lousy memory. On the other hand, I might never have known the folks in those areas. (probably the lousy memory...) Regardless, I appreciate your email. It does take me back to the days when CDC had many folks working for them. Thank you. Be well. ========================================================= Garry Schumacher Our friend and coworker Garry Schumacher passed away on Thanksgiving. I wanted to share with you what the arrangements are in case you can attend. He will be deeply missed. On behalf of our PDT organization I will be making a memorial donation per his wishes in lieu of flowers. Garry's service will be at Messiah Lutheran Church (2848 County Road H-2, Mounds View, MN) on Thursday, December 2nd at 6 pm. There will be a visitation beginning at 2 pm at church until the time of the service. There will be a meal served immediately following the service. It was Garry's wish that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Water Garden Fund (Grounds Beautification) at Messiah Lutheran Church. - - - - - - - - December 2, 2010 Hi Norm, I went to the visitation for Garry this afternoon. I thought I saw your truck there and parked next to it. I was therefore hopeful to see you inside, but if you were there at that time, our paths didn't cross. Anyway, I enjoyed visiting briefly with Pam, Garry's wife. I asked some questions about when Garry left Syntegra. She replied that he was laid off in March of 2009 and that he was diagnosed with cancer in February of this year. She mentioned that Garry outlived two life expectancy deadlines and that she was very happy that he was able to be with them until Thanksgiving day. Pam was talking with a group of square dancers that came to the visitation. Square dancing was a primary activity for Garry and Pam through the years. Garry had a 42-year career with Control Data/Syntegra. He did work in Australia for two years in the early 1970s. During this time he may have been working for McDonnell Douglas. Garry was only 65 when he died. Too young! I always looked up to Garry's technical abilities. I mentioned to Pam that I thought he was the consummate professional. Thanks again, Pat, for passing along the information. Of course, none of the above is to be sent out. Just my reflections on a nice visit to honor the family of a fine gentleman. Jerry Dahlin Note: I thought Jerry’s comments should be included somewhere in here. I hope somebody has that many nice things to say about me. PRJ

Tony (Wilson)

I've been trying to remember to tell you this, and keep forgetting. In yesterday's paper, or maybe the day before, there was an obituary for Charlie Crichton. I'm almost certain you will remember him. He was the boss over CIDP (I think that's what it was then) back in the late '70s (I think - my time sense isn't so good). He was also the mayor of Arden Hills at one time, and at the time of his death, he was on the Burnsville city council.

Bob Balint

Pat - not sure if you're aware of Bob Balint - see below. I used to work for Bob when he was EIC at the Johnson Space Center. I just received this email today (March 28) and based on the email it was sent out on March 27 and Bob passed away on March 7. There is no obituary attached that I can locate.

Not sure if you want to pass this on but for sure I think Bruce Carlston would want to know since he also worked for Bob. Dennis

Pat, Here is Bob Balint's Obituary: (BWC) http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/obituaries/?mode=view&obit_id=206138&source=rss&feed=48 - - - - - - Bob Baliant was a good friend of mine, as was his wife Maryanne. He was the EIC @ Johnson Space Center when I was there in the mid 70s. Before that he was in 6000 Tech Support. Maryanne was a nun when she quit to marry Bob. Bruce (Carlston) - - - - - - Thanks, Pat. I remember Bob well from my 6600 instructor days. I also remember Bruce Carlston and Don Crouse. Good troops!! Kent Hoover - - - - - - Hi Pat I was shocked at Bob's death. I was the Dist Mgr when he worked for me at NASA. I promoted him into management and later talked him into coming to Phil as the Dist. Mgr.where he was for several years. Bruce also worked for me at NASA. Bob truly was a great guy, and I am very saddened by his death. John (McSweeney)

Page 30: Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2006 6:48 PM · This file contains notes and e-mails, which several people have sent to me over the last year. ===== Bad e-mails since last Super Lunch

- - - - - - - I received a message from Ed Borner about Bob Balints death. I also saw the messages from Don Crouse and Bruce Carlston and thought I would add some information. I met Bob in 1966 when I was EIC at Westinghouse Bettis in Pittsburg. Bob was a Bettis employee working as a programmer. We became good friends and he became interested in working for Engineering Services. He ask that I help him with employment at CDC which I did. CDC hired Bob about 1977 or 1978 and he went into 6000 training. Originally he was scheduled to come back to Pittsburg to work as a CE at the Westinghouse-Squirrel Hill facility. However, things changed and he was assigned to NYU-Courant in NY City. That is where Don Crouse met him. I was moved from Pittsburg to Philadelphia to the Westinghouse Steam facility and then to New Jersey as Technical Support Supervisor working for Norm Shapiro who worked for Glen Giffin. Bob transferred into Easter Region tech support as a 6000 tech support engineer and worked for me in 1969-1970. Bob, Gerhart Wahl, and Roger Lund were a talented and crazy trio in this tech support group. There were other support engineers in that group but these three were fun and could always be counted. Mid 1970 I was moved to Houston working for Walt Perkins as Regional Tech support manager. About 1971 Bob transferred to the Southern Region tech support group as a 6000 tech support engineer. He was a major asset to the tech support group and had excellent technical and customer skills. As Don Crouse said, he ask for a transfer to a non-traveling job after his marriage to Maryanne and became a proud father. He was transferred to the NASA Space Center as EIC. I don’t remember the exact year of this change but the support group really missed him and he did double duty as EIC and tech support when a critical technical problem came up. In late 1983 the reorganization took place and the Southern region was eliminated. I was assigned to the new Western Region in San Jose so Bob, Maryanne, and I began to lose touch with each other. I am saddened to lose a friend such as Bob. I knew Bob and Maryanne many years and have very good memories of our relationship. They were always there to help those needing assistance and helped me through my divorce. I will always be grateful for their kindness, support, and Maryanne’s cooking. Pat, if this information is helpful you’re free to pass it on. If not hit the delete key. Been a long time since having any contact with you. Hope things are well. I am retired on a small ranch in Fredericksburg, Texas raising sheep. Talk about a career change. Give regards to our mutual friends. Don Davison - - - - - - Hi Pat The spelling is Baliant as use to tease him as be "Ba-lint". I met Bob working at NYU as a 6000 site SE in 1967 when I was in tech support of the site. I saw he was very sharp and could work the long hours us in support had to work. He was young and single so I ask him if he would travel and work in support. He joined the Eastern support group lead by Don Davidson where he shined. When I

Page 31: Sent: Saturday, January 21, 2006 6:48 PM · This file contains notes and e-mails, which several people have sent to me over the last year. ===== Bad e-mails since last Super Lunch

froze out of Minn and national support in 1969 and went back to Texas and joined the very fine Southern region support group lead by John Hilton, Bob wanted to come the Texas with me But Don Davidson would not let him go. Roger Lund went to Engineering in Minn and Don Davidson replaced John Hilton who became a District manager as the Southern Region support leader, Bob got to transfer to Houston with us. I traveled to a lot of sites in the world where Bob came to help with his knowledge of the new ECS memory /ECS coupler in the multi-mainfrane systems . After Bob got married his wife, Mary, did not like the traveling. Then the first child came, Bob left our group and became the EIC at NASA Houston and did a great job as a leader instead of just a super tech jock! HE SURE WAS ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS! Don (Crouse) - - - - - - Pat, Thank you for doing this. I did not know Bob Baliant but there is a possibility that I talked to him on the phone as I called all of the 6600 sites to make sure they were properly maintaining the refrigeration cooling systems up through 1967. EE's and refrigeration systems did not necessarily get along very well. They all appreciated the calls and help as it helped keep them out of trouble. Interesting history from the "good ole' days" at Control Data. Mike (Doyle) - - - - - - Pat, The GOOD old ones are falling like flies! I remember Bob from 6000 Class back in '67 when Thama Raul was leading the class. Bob and Roger (Lund) were the cut ups. That's when they spent 6 months on the checkout floor before going to their sites. I think Bob went to Bettis. Regards, John Herre ========================================================= Fritz B. St. Paul, Minnesota April 14, 2011 Dear Pat, I thought that you would like to see this. When Fritz first worked for CDC, he had a two-digit clock number. He worked for John Nipp, and his first task was to document the FORTRAN compiler for Seymour. Later he was one of fewer than a dozen who reviewed every document ever produced by CDC for the IBM lawsuit. Sincerely, Clemmer - - - - - - April 18, 2011 Hi Pat, I remember working with Fritz and finding him to be a fun, albeit a bit cynical, person to talk to. He was an enthralling story teller. In fact, I bought his house in Blaine from him - my first foray into rental properties - when he decided he wanted to sell. Back when CDC was in the news for having more vice presidents than companies like IBM, GM and Ford he shared with me his view of CDC management. He said every time he went to headquarters it reminded him of standing on a bridge looking down on a floating log that had hundreds of ants scurrying across its surface. He noted that each of those ants, just like each of CDC's executives, thinks it's steering that log. Regards, Dave (Johnson) - - - - - - Fritz died on Sunday April 10th. The end was peaceful, after a long and painful illness. There will be a Memorial Service at St.Mark's Cathedral on April 21 at 10:00 A.M.
