law this is very exceptional. There are only very specicsituations when a contract cannot be extended beyond theinitial period of tenure. If one of these exceptional casesdoes not apply, the contract will be extended by law andthe tenant doesnt need to sign a new contract to continuerenting the apartment.

Renting a furnished apartment can be very handy if youare only planning to stay in Amsterdam for a short time. Most of the apartments rented to international residentsare fully furnished. In general, this is not at the requestof the tenant but is the house owners preference. Itreinforces a temporary feeling for the tenant, which suitsthe house owner very well. It is by no means forbiddento rent out a furnished apartment but the contract mustspecify the amount that the tenant must pay for using thefurnishings on a monthly basis. The law states that thelandlord must not make a prot on the furnishings, whichalso applies to so-called free market apartments. Thegeneral rule is that the landlord may only charge one-60thof the total value of the furnishings per month. So, forexample, if the tenant pays 100 a month for furnishings, the value of the furnishings must be at least 6,000!Landlords often charge much more than the fractionpermitted. Based on Dutch law, you can start a procedureto claim back the overpaid amounts.

The Wijksteunpunten Wonen is an organisation fortenants and also provides free advice to internationalresidents. You can nd them at:www.wswonen.nl/engl ish.

Amsterdams Wijksteunpunten Wonen(District Housing Support Group) provideslegal advice about renting accommodationin Amsterdam. Most international residentsliving in Amsterdam nd their apartmentsthrough a housing agency, which alsoarranges the contract with the house ownerand for which the tenant pays a fee; normallyone months rent (plus 19% value added tax). So, the more expensive the apartment, thehigher the fee. The question is whether thisa fair price, since it bears no relation to theeffort expended by the agency?

Of greater importance is the question of whether theagency is allowed to demand a fee from the tenant in therst place! In most situations the agency is already beingpaid by the house owner and, as a court ruled last year,an agency may not demand a fee from both parties. Anagency also needs a permit from the city council to bringtenants and house owners together in Amsterdam. So, ifyou paid a fee as an inter national resident, tr y to nd outwho is paying who and consider a pro cedure to claim ba ckyour money.

Another issue is th at of temporary re ntal contracts. Ifyou rent an apartm ent in the private sector, the contrac tusually includes the word temporary. According to Dutch

interesting of all styles. In his most famous novel, The

Unbearable Lightness of Be ing, he spends time ex plaininga perceived repetitiveness in lifes trials and outcomes.I paraphrase from the novel, we only borrow from thelexicon of human experiences.

Perpetually armed with this memory I stumbled across adescription of Prague from an even more illustrious giantof 19th/20th century thinking. I had opened the Spring2012 edition of TTG Czech Luxury while catching mybreath in preparation for considering the initial impactof the city and my room, which I was checking out beforeheading out. The magazine contained a bold quotation, which I read duri ng my rst hour in the city. Having nowreturned to Amsterdam, which is but a very comfortablesixty-ve minute ight away, I have no qualms aboutavoiding repetitiveness and redundancies but rather toborrow from a much more expressive past exponent of thehuman experience to convey my awe: ...the city of Pragueis wonderful, that beautiful that this city alone wouldalready prove value for a longer journey. (Albert Einstein)

Over the following few issues of The Sentinel we willcontinue to revisit all things Prague and Czech. For now,I offer you a photographic tour of the city, sights visitedand some of the experiences enjoyed as part of a guided

group during the rst two days of our stay. Our guideturned out to be a genius in people skills and an absolutemaster of knowledge regarding his beloved city, but youwill hear more a bout him later. Now, lets walk a little...

Spring is a time of year that is unfailing in its

ability to engender ideas of re-evaluation andrenewal. Sometimes the review can span alifetime, as we say goodbye to yet anothernorthern winter with its long, dark days, whichso naturally demarks another year passed, never to return.

This spring I was the guest of the city of Prague, as part ofan international party of journalists and photographers. We were brought there to take bac k a fresh view ofthe Czech Republics capital and what it has to offer. We would cover as much cultura l ground and ve-sta raccommodation options as stylishly possible during ourfour days and the pleasing impressions gained shouldencourage you to visit soon.

Despite a personal history of generally getting along verywell with Czech col leagues and casu al friends, in addit ionto the fact that one of my two favourite authors is a nativeof the country, I had never before visited. It is a true rush,as a forty-three year old, to approach such a desirablejourney as a vir gin, so to speak.

The author I refer to is Milan Kundera and, althoughhe was born in the Moravian city of Brno, he studiedliterature, aesthetics, lm direction and script writingin Prague. Kundera introduced me to a form ofphilosophically digressive writing that I nd the most

    Opera PrimaKinkerstraat 224, Amsterdam

The Kin kerstraat; we all know it, weve allbeen there. It is a typical shopping street withits own, rather strange charm, which you getto know slowly if you go there fairly often, as

I do. It is not pretty and might even be one ofAmsterdams ugliest shopping streets. It haslots of obscure shops among the standardDutch chain stores, interrupted by cheapeateries (snack bars, kebab shops, roti shops,Chinese restaurants, etc.). Its also great forcheap clothes and shoes with some shopsseemingly changing ownership every sixmonths; from sale to outlet shop to bargainstore and back to sale.

A short while ago a new litt le shop opened that looked soout of place it made me curious. Looking like blown-up,luxury chocolate packaging, Opera Prima is like Cinderellalost in space. Nothing else has ever looked this attractiveor luxurious on Kinkerstraat.

One recent Saturday, two friends and I decided to go forlunch at the new del icatessen/shop/restaurant/cake shop andwe lingered for a whi le. The choice of food and cakes is soamazing that its difcult to know where to start. Just takea look at the photos and head there as soon as you can to seefor yourself. The words mouth-watering and mesmerising

come to mind when recalling the gorgeous cakes and

heavenly sweet pastries on offer in this unique place. The wallpaper is luxuriously striped, there are ornaments, shades of pink, black and gold with nice tables and seats, and a chandelier. Staff are welcoming, helpful and nice, inan un-Amsterdam-like way, and appear happy to see you

no matter how busy they are. It also serves genuine Italiancoffees, nice Pukka and fresh mint teas. I would havebeen happy to stay there all day, especially in the upstairsarea where comfortable seats lure you into changing yourplans.

The cheesecake kept my usually quite talkative friendquiet for some time My other friend enjoyed a luscioussmall pie with duck cont, which was just one of the manygreat savoury dishes: pies, empanadas, lasagne, risotto orwhatever they felt like ma king that day. You can choosefrom different main courses and a daily soup, which youcan either eat there or take away. In addition, it has agreat selection of luxury goodies, like champagne, jelly, chutney, olive oil, chocolates, vinegar and more, so you cantake some of this great quality feeling with you and enjoyit even more.

You will want to retur n to Opera Prim a at least once aweek. The opulence and ult imate qualit y, mixed withthe homely and welcoming atmosphere, make you feellike it is exactly the type of place you were looking for.It is probably the best lunch place in Amsterdam at themoment and a great excuse to visit the Kinkerstraat andTen Kate market.

We believe strongly that in theng term, we will be better served asareholders and in all other ways by ampany that does good things for the worldn if we forgo some short term gains.lowing on from our previous instalment, oting Googles IPO statement above, weamine two interesting cases of the

    mpanys evil doings.

ality, in Kenya, owned the largest database of Kenyaninesses, which it acquired through a reward scheme.yans provided the information, which Mocalityed for accur acy before payi ng the informat ionplier. In September 2011, Google entered the Kenyanket with GKBO (Getting Kenyan Businesses Online), aniative aimed at helping Kenyan businesses. FollowingGKBO launch, Mocality started to receive calls from

mpanies in its database asking for services Mocality didoffer. Mocality checked its database and found that the

mpanies that had called them had been accessedough its database from a specic internet location (IPress) a few days earlier. It appeared that someone wasessing Mocalitys client database and offering themrnative services.

Mocality decided to change its website code, so that anyoneaccessing its data from that specic IP address would beprovided with an alternative business number to call. Thefake number would be routed through to a Mocality callcentre, enabling the company to nd out who wasaccessing its database. Not long after the code changeMocality received a call from someone representingGoogle Kenya, who claimed to be working with Mocality. This representative then proceeded to offer variousservices to the call recipient which, in fact, was Mocalityitself. This happened repeatedly, throughout theinvestigation, and Mocality estimated that, on a dailybasis, around 25 of the businesses in its database werecontacted and offered services by Google Kenya. In someinstances, Google Kenya offered to sell listings fromMocalitys database, which even Mocality did not do, sincethey offered this as a free service.

Google admitted thatsome of its employeeswere responsibleAccess from that sp ecic IP addr ess stopped afte r a fewmonths, yet Mocality still received calls from businesses

claiming they had been offered services by the company. So, Mocality reviewed its database and again found a singleIP address to be responsible for a large proportion of thedatabase trawling. This address was traced back to GoogleIndia. After setting up the same trap, Mocality receivedcalls from Google representatives in India, selling thesame services as before and claiming collaboration withMocality. It appeared that the Google Kenya operation hadnow been outsourced to India. Mocality later found outthat the calls from Google India were placed by athird-party vendor. Google must have knowingly giventhis third-party vendor permission to use its own Googleinternal network to trawl the Mocality database. Thisproved that this was not just a group of rogue employees ata single location, but something that spanned variousGoogle ofces. After some initial denial, Google admittedthat some of its employees were responsible, but werequick to point out that they were part of a small group ofindividuals. Just a few months ago, Goog le was also accus ed of illegallyplacing small les of information on peoples computers, enabling Google to track their online activities. Thesesmall les, called cookies, can be turned off using aninternet browser option, making it no longer possible to betracked in this way. However, Google programmers found

a bug in certain internet browsers that allowed them tocircumvent this option, allowing the company to continuetracking people against their wishes. This bug was notexploited by accident, but through clever programming byGoogle. When this was discovered and pointed out by theWall Street Journa l, Google apologise d saying that it didnot consider what they were doing to be wrong, but theydisabled the code anyway. Google had been almost literallycaught with its hand in the cookie jar.

In both of these cases, Google clearly knew what it wasdoing and was making a concerted effort to increase itscompetitive advantage through its actions. Think aboutthe companys motivation; Google is built on advertisingrevenue, which accounted for 96% of the US$ 37.9 billion itmade in 2011. One has to question how many more ofthese activities are still going on undetected. Like ananimal backed into a corner, Google is lashing outuncharacteristically in response to threats from Facebook,Amazon and Apple. Thes e three compa nies have thrown aspanner into the works of the Google business model andwe will look at how this ha s come about in our next issue. In the meantime, Dont Be Evil!

Women who drinketween one hal and one glass wine or beer per day have aty per cent reduced chance ouering a stroke

    By Dirkje Bakker-Pierre

    63TreNDS

Every day I check the latest news on theinternet. Theres a Dutch news website thatI probably check at least ten times a day, butdont ask me why. Its not as if I really expectsome groundbreaking news report every timeI look. I mean, I just checked it an hour ago, what could have happened in the meanti me?Mostly the headlines consist of nothing of realinterest, such as marginal articles on Dutchpolitics and the economy with a lot of updateson crime-related stories and sad stories thatcould be called sensational.

What I did notice the other we ek (22 March) was theheadline, ALCOHOL PREVENTS STROKES. The articlereports on an American piece of research, which concludesthat women (they didnt research men) who drink betweenone half and one glass of wine or beer per day have a ftyper cent reduced chance of suffering a stroke than womenwho never touch alcohol.

The article wasnt very clear on the effects of alcohol whenused in larger quantities, only remarking in the nal line, the use of too much wine and beer can lead to high bloodpressure, which increases the chance of having a stroke.

With reading beha viour these days consist ing of either justbrowsing headlines or maybe a few lines here and there,I wonder what most people who like a drink would havepicked up on. Especially since probably more than fty

per cent of them havent gone beyond the headline andmay have told others they know about it while drinking insome nice Amsterdam bar.

Other headlines on nu.nl in recent years have included:ALCOHOL MAKES YOU MORE CREATIVE (12 February),ALCOHOL IMPROVES PARTS OF MEMORY (15 April 2011),ALCOHOL REDUCES RISK OF DIABETES (25 May 2010) andALCOHOL BEAUTIFIES SKIN (27 October 2009).

Aha! you must think; some good news after all :).

One conclusion I can draw from my own little researchis that there are a lot of reports focused on the benetsof alcohol on our health (mostly from the US). Who is/areactually funding all of this research and why isnt thismoney being spent on AIDS, cancer or malaria research,or into other serious diseases? Because, honestly, even ifwe all like drinki ng, it is already well known for a ver y,very long time that a lcohol is, in the long run and ingeneral, much more damaging than it is benecial. I canonly conclude that the choice of headlines at nu.nl pointstoward urges to sensationalise news, as well as pleasingdrinkers, or they have some clandestine endorsement dealthat they arent telling us about.

I cross-referenced The Guardians website and haventfound a single article on the positive effects of alcohol, butrather quite the opposite.

My name is Fleur Berkhout and I am anutritionist. I am very happy and proud to bethe third member of the professional teamthat has created and put into practice theGOH concept. I studied nutrition and diet, andpossess a degree in Nutrition & Health Care.My previous work has been hospital-based andI am now in private practice, where I helppeople lose weight and combine effective foodhabits with sports. I found out eventually thatthis is where my heart lies as a nutritionist.

Being overweight or physically unt affects the two mostimportant things in life: health and self-esteem. Whatpeople most need, therefore, is good coaching in botheating and physical activity habits (and, of course, willpowe r and motivation).

The GOH concept combines the expertise of aphysiotherapist, a personal trainer and a nutritionist. Thisis what makes it so special and complete. As a nutritionist,I can teach people how to adjust their food habits, so theycan more easily reach their personal goals. Besides givingfood advice, I can also work on peoples discipline andself-esteem, enabling them to feel good about themselvesand making it much easier for them to keep up the goodwork.

My name is Peter Fenwick and I am a memberof the GOH team. My background is verydiverse and covers dance theatre, humanmovement sciences and my continuing studyof Chinese medicine. I have developed amethod of training that not only motivatesyou but produces results, and that is whatultimately counts. It combines all aspects ofmovement to create a functional trainingmethod, which not only focuses on heart rateand condition but stability and core muscles.Together, these fur ther enhance the effects ofweight loss and muscle toning. The sessionshave been designed in such a way that theyconsolidate movement in all three planes ofexistence, using the kinetic chain. We, the GOH team David Billy (Physiotherapist),Peter Fenwick (Personal Trainer) and Fleur Berkhout(Nutritionist) are delighted to introduce you to afull-service programme that caters for your health andwell-being goa ls.

ason reviews and player nominations fornours are afoot or already completed andas good a time as any for us to considerayers who have missed out on selection ine FFG-CL but who may be stars, or stars ine making.

e position played in football which, if watched closely,

ns out to be the most spectacular is that of goalkeeper.e only has to stand inside an ofcial-sized goal frameealise the vast space professionals are meant to protecth what is, in real ter ms, 0% room for error. The entir eective of football is to get the ball into the net (gettingentire ball over the goal line, strictly speaking).mately, one person sta nds in the way of all eff ortsgoal. Goalkeepers are usually athletic eccentrics,ce theirs is a job in which relatively long passages ofy, in all weather conditions, can pass without theirect involvement. When they do become involved, it isariably a crucial intervention.

points tallies of goalkeepers in the FFG-CL reveal thatHart of Manches ter City is leading, Petr Cec h (Chelsea)

n second place and the truly impressive Wojciech

Szczesny (Arsenal) is third. I suggest that the Polesperformances have been the best overall in the PremierLeague this season, given that Hart has had an easiertime with an awesome defensive mideld bank and verygood defenders in front of him, while Cech, despite theupheavals at Chelsea, remains a mature master. Szczesny,on the other hand, is the new, opinionated, young gun(ner)with all the at tributes to alre ady place him in the categor yof spectacularly brilliant.

Should his price indication in this fantasy footballcompetiton remain reasonable and the promise of Arsenalimproving as a unit in the real world continues, then Iforesee Szczesny being very popular with managers nextseason. Before the next campaign begins, we will havethe opportunity to see this young man during Euro 2012,exhibiting his truly impressive powers of concentration(he often appears to anticipate actions, including the angleand pace of attempts on goal, before they are made), whichmake his supremely athletic saves even more assured. It ismy feeling that, with home-nation, emotionally chargedsupport, Szczesny is unlikely to disappoint and will inspirea new generation of wannabe goalkeepers as he makeshis very difcult job appear so very easy. He is elegant, powerful and excites while practising his sporting craft.
