AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY[We are delighted to have been instructed to offer the award-winning Polar Class exhibit formed by Kevin Dwyer of New South Wales. This fascinating display combines philatelic material with postcards, photographs, telegrams and other ephemera all contributing to the story of Australia's involvement in Antarctica. It was awarded a Large Gold Medal and was Runner-Up for the Grand Prix at the National Exhibition in Canberra in March 2008. After our great success with his wife Kim's Cocos Islands at our auction of 24/6/2006, Kevin said "When I win a Large Gold, the Antarctica goes to you too!" Well, here it is, the most significant Antarctic collection we have ever been privileged to prepare for sale. At some 6,000,000+ square kilometres, the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is the largest tract administered by any nation.]

AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY - The Age of Discovery (1911-1931)[The 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) was led by Douglas Mawson, a geologist from Adelaide. Mawson had been with Shackleton's 1908 Expedition & was one of the first group to climb Mount Erebus, the highest point on the Antarctic continent. The AAE was essentially a scientific project that made major contributions in geology, meteorology, geo-magnetism & biology. It has been called "the first major scientific exploring venture by Australians beyond their shores". In addition, the extensive physical exploration & associated cartography laid the basis for Australia's later claim to what became the AAT. Mawson's epic editing of the 22 volumes of the AAE "Scientific Reports" was completed only in 1947. Mawson lead the British Australian & New Zealand Research Expedition (BANZARE) of 1929-32 which focussed on marine science & resulted in a further 13 volumes of reports]

PS 1903 NSW 1d Postal Card to "DMawson Esq/Chemical Laboratory/University/Sydney" from 'GERRINGONG' with message "...Don't forget maps, hammer & hatchet..." & signed "TGriffith Taylor", minor blemishes.

Mawson graduated in mining engineering in 1902 & commenced his geological studies in 1904. Thomas Griffith Taylor in some ways had a parallel career to Mawson's. He was meteorologist with Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated "Terra Nova" expedition of 1910-13 & was awarded the King's Polar Medal in 1913. Both men performed distinguished science-related work during World War I. At the date of this card, Griffith was 23yo, and Mawson two years his junior. Taylor is renowned as one of Australia's pre-eminent geographers]

PS 1912 usage of 1911 Fullface 1d Postal Card P1 to "Dr D Mawson/Adelaide University" with printed advice for the Microscopical Section of the Royal Society. [Mawson was still in Antarctica, fighting for his life. With Xavier Mertz & Belgrave Ninnes he had set off in December 1912 on the Far Eastern Expedition. 300 miles out, Ninnis fell to his death in a crevasse, taking with him most of the group's food. The others turned back, supplementing their meagre rations with meat from their dogs. When Mertz died, Mawson used a pocket-saw to cut his sled in half & dragged it the final 100 miles. The return trek took 55 days. He arrived to see the "Aurora" departing for Hobart. A rescue team of 6 left behind to search for the trio nursed Mawson back to health. They were picked up on the "Aurora's" return on 12/12/1913! By then, the radio operator, had "lost his marbles"]
