Vice-President’s Message

Exciting times ahead for members of Warren! With the renovation of the golf course coming along nicely and on schedule, the Management Committee and the Club Management have been busy looking at even more ways to refresh our facilities and offerings to our members.

Some of you may have already noticed that the Water Hazard is being renovated with a projected completion around the middle of September, to make it an even better place in the Club to unwind and enjoy a drink or two with friends. With a larger main hall, it will be a nice alternative venue for Club events and dinner parties. There will now be 1 private room adequately-sized for your little karaoke parties with family and friends.

In June this year, we also took over the running of the T Bar which now offers great food and drinks promotions on Fridays, a change that has been very well-received by members, and has definitely increased vibrancy in the Club during weekend nights. From our BBQ set promotion in July, to the Lok Lok promotion in August and our Satay promotion in September, members can look forward to even more value and fun at this outlet. If you haven’t yet brought your family and friends down, there’s always a weekend around the corner!

In addition to good facilities, service standards is also an important focus for us. In 2014, we embarked on a service excellence programme that we called “Heart-of-Service” within the Club. It started off with a club-wide service skills training for every single one of our staff at every level. I’m happy to announce that after 2 years and several distinct phases of the programme, which included a members online survey and “mystery shopper” exercises, we are now at the stage of evaluating the results which will determine the future staff and service development programmes. A big “thank you” to all members who participated in the survey, and do look out for the feature article on the programme and our journey ahead, coming up in our next issue of Warren Tidings.

Another exciting piece of news - we had just launched a Kids’ Club and within just 2 months, we now have close to 90 kids on board. This is the brainchild of the Social Sub-Committee with the objectives of creating an exciting and exclusive environment for the Warren Kids’ Club members to instill in them a sense of importance and belonging, future their young minds and even foster better parent-child relationships. Members of this club will get to learn new things, participate in kids’ events at discounted rates and attend Kids’ Club parties. This is just the beginning and the committee will continue to work at adding more perks and benefits to the club members.

On a slightly more sombre note, the Club has had to bid farewell to more and more Social members. We’ve noted that the top reason for resignation is that their children have grown up and are no longer using our facilities. Notwithstanding the more challenging economic times, the Membership & Constitution Sub-Committee (MCSC) continues to tirelessly promote our Social memberships through marketing and other recruitment efforts, because we believe that there is so much more that Warren can offer to families looking for a vibrant and exciting home-away-from-home experience.

Finally, I thought I would shed some light on one of the recent changes we had made in our Club Rules Article 24.11 with regard to the Ladies Sub-Committee. As part of my MCSC’s ongoing effort to refresh and streamline the Constitution and our Club Rules, it was decided to align the Lady Captain’s term with the Management Committee (MC)’s term. So with effect from 2017, the Lady Captain will be elected by the lady members once every 2 years instead of annually which is the current practice. And similar to all MC members, the Lady Captain will not serve more than 2 consecutive terms. Once elected, the Lady Captain will then, as Chairperson of the Ladies Sub-Committee, nominate her committee members with endorsement by the Club Captain and the MC, a practice that is consistent with all other Sub-Committees in the Club.

So there’s lots to enjoy in our Club. Come on down and be a part of it all. My parting words to all… in today’s world when you can be anything you want to be, let’s be kind!

Captain’sMessage

By the time you are reading this message, a group of about 20 of our golfers have just gone on a trip to Batam, Indonesia. This 3D2N trip included a game each at Tering Bay Golf & Country Club, Southlinks Country Club and Palm Springs Golf & Country Club. We will be sure to cover more about this trip in the next issue.

The golfing trip to Chiangmai is fast approaching. This trip spans 5 days from 28 October to 1 November and we already have more than 30 signups! Slots are running out so register your interest with the Golf Department by 16 September and don’t let pass this trip which promises to bring you heaps of fun and laughter.

Members have been coming forth to us with feedback and suggestions on improving our booking system and processes. And for that, I would like to extend a note of appreciation to all of you for sharing your thoughts and views. While we are not able to adopt every suggestion, we always bear in mind the interest of the majority of our members when implementing new or reviewing existing policies.

With effect from 1 September 2016, there will be changes in the timing of our Thursday in-person booking for play on weekends/Public Holidays. Queue numbers will now be issued at 12.30pm and booking will commence at 1.30pm (previously, queue numbers were issued at 1.00pm and golfers could only make bookings at 4.30pm). Booking will still be conducted at the Events Room and all other rules & regulations will still continue to apply.

The main objective of bringing forward the booking time is to create an opportunity for our working members to make bookings by making use of their lunchtime to come to the Club. Additionally, with the much shortened time between the issuance of queue numbers and actual booking, this will no doubt benefit our members as they need not hang around for too long at the Club while waiting for booking to commence. Thus, we trust that adjusting the booking time will be a favourable move as it reduces the inconvenience brought to our members. We will continue to monitor the situation and see if there is any room for improvement. It will not be a drastic change though.

Though the weather has been erratic with a fickle combination of rain and sun, our golf course renovation works is keeping good pace. At this moment, we are pretty confident that completion of works on the first nine will be within schedule. We will continue to keep members updated on the renovation progress through this publication, the board outside the Golf Reception, website and all other available communications platforms.

On a final note, we still have some members who have not registered for the SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS). I would therefore, like to remind and urge all members who have not registered to do so quickly. Registration can be made online at www.chs.sga.org.sg. It is important to note that golfers who wish to maintain their handicap in Singapore must register for the CHS and if otherwise, they will not have a valid USGA handicap.

IN-PERSON BOOKING TIMINGPlease note that with effect from 1 September 2016, Thursday’s In-Person Booking for play on weekends and Public Holidays will be changed as follows:

Issuance of Queue Numbers Commencement of Booking

12.30pm 1.30pm

The venue for booking remains unchanged at the Events Room. All other current booking rules & regulations will also continue to apply.

Bringing the booking timing forward will facilitate booking by working members who may then come during lunchtime to make bookings.

Shortening the time between the issuance of queue numbers and commencement of booking will reduce members’ waiting time and the inconvenience brought about by the previous longer waiting time for booking.

This decision was made upon taking into account various suggestions from members and with the interest of the majority of our members in mind. We hope to have your continued support as we constantly review our processes and systems to improve our service to members.

Young Warren Golfer Donovan Lee Making The Cut to Compete in Scotland

One of Warren’s own rising talents, Donovan Lee (15 years old) was recently being invited to play in the Junior Open Championship 2016 in Scotland held from 11 - 13 July. Though the results did not turn out the way he had hoped for, the experience certainly tops everything.

“It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me”, recalled Donovan with great enthusiasm. “I was being selected to play for Singapore by SGA based on the Order of Merit. I was lucky to get the spot as I felt I had been playing quite well prior to the call-up. The Junior Open Championship in Scotland is held once every 2 years and is open only to golfers below 16 years old. I am 15 now, and I would have certainly missed the boat if I didn’t make the cut this time round. I would like to thank SGA and all those involved for giving me the opportunity to play in this Junior Open.”

When asked about the challenges he faced playing his first tournament in Europe, Donovan replied: “Playing in link courses is a big challenge to me. In windy conditions and the cold Scottish weather, games can get a bit tough. I needed some real getting used to. Although I came a few days earlier to adapt to the weather and playing conditions, I still couldn’t adjust and play well due to inexperience to such environment.

As I have said, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I learnt a lot from my participation in this tournament. I have learnt to improve on the different aspects of my playing and prepare myself better to play in different playing conditions and environment.”

We are glad to know that Donovan came home with so much to gain from the experience. We wish him every success in his golfing endeavours and that he continues to go from strength to strength!

In order to do this, we will continue to seek the ladies’ participation in all events that we roll out to make them successful.

For years, Warren has been known to have an active ladies golfing community, but I think there’s room to grow in creating a more vibrant ladies community in Warren.

Last but not least, we welcome feedback from the ladies. In fact, we will be actively going out to seek their feedback to help us achieve this objective.

I will put in my best in the role as Lady Captain, working together with my Committee for the next one year.”

Catherine KwekLady Captain

“I used to be very active in sports representing my school in hockey, volley ball and athletics. I started golf about 13 years ago and I have never regretted picking up this wonderful game. The scenic courses, the sunshine, the wind and the smell of the grass. The people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made are the most important to me in the game of golf.

I am honoured to be your Lady Vice-Captain. Moving forward, our main objective is to encourage and bring our ladies together to enjoy the golfing experience in Warren. We will be planning some fun games and activities specially for our Warren ladies. We look forward to your participation and continued support.

Last but not least, our team appreciates any feedback that will help us to serve you better.”

Katie TanLady Vice-Captain

“Thank you for your support! As a working lady golfer, I can appreciate the difficulty in allocating precious vacation leave for the weekday golf events. And, as a committee member, I will make every effort to participate in all major events (both weekday & weekend) to be able to enjoy the adrenaline spike of competing against you ladies as well as soaking in the companionship.

My sincere thanks to all and looking forward to play with you in one of the many golf events planned for the year ahead.”

Shirlene OhHonorary Secretary

“It’s been an honour to serve the lady golfers in Warren for the last 2 years and I am starting this new term as the Honorary Treasurer. Golf is one of my passions besides travelling and enjoying good food. With golf, I am able to do all these and more. I get to visit beautiful courses and experience the many cultures and cuisines. I try to make it a point to play overseas at least

twice a year. My wish is to be able to play The Old Course at St Andrews or Pebble Beach one day. The cool climate and relaxing atmosphere makes golfing overseas a lot more enjoyable too

I have enjoyed myself playing and socialising in Warren for the last 4 years and I look forward to another great year here at Warren.

Shoot low!”

Kina HuangHonorary Treasurer

“I have always loved sports, however I only started playing golf when I came to Singapore. Golf is, and has always been a challenge for me. But the more I play, I’ve found myself enjoying it further. What I’ve realised is, the reason I seem to fall in love with golf is because of the large amount of friendships that are created through the game itself. I have participated in almost all golf events and tournaments. Through participating, I ended up discovering the world of golf.

I am extremely grateful to be a part of the Ladies Sub-Committee as it has given me an opportunity to contribute new ideas and a positive energy to the Club. I am looking forward to working with my fellow members to create strong and healthy relationships amongst all of our lady golfers.

I am also looking forward to be playing with all of you in the future. So feel free to invite me for a round of 18 holes.

Thank you and hope to see you around!”

Nina UmCommittee Member

“Since I was young, I have really enjoyed playing sports and the great outdoors. I have played badminton, swimming, rugby, dragon boat, trekking, kayaking and countless other sports. Picking up golf was a really easy decision for me as my family and friends were really supportive. I am really thankful to all the people who have taken their time and effort to guide me.

Since joining the Club, I have really enjoyed learning the game and also getting to know some of the other members at the Club who have all been extremely friendly and welcoming. I look forward to getting to know more members as time goes by and to steadily improve my golf.

It is a privilege to be able to sit on the Ladies Sub-Committee. I am looking forward to be able to give back to the Club by working with the committee and management to help us overcome the various challenges we face and ensure the Club is well looked after for the enjoyment of all members now and in the future.”

Airin YacupHandicap Secretary

“Though I have been quite active in sports, I would never have thought that I would one day fall in love with the game of golf. I really have my husband to thank - he exposed me to this wonderful game and he has been my personal coach, encouraging and challenging me to improve with every game. He has been a tough and strict coach! Haha. I love the challenge and also the beautiful scenery that golf

offers. It is such a unique game that does not really pit you against others, but instead the “opponent” is yourself and also the nature around you. I have become more patient because of it. While I have not been playing golf for very long, I have had the privilege of playing in league games with some of Warren’s best members, and interactions with them have made me become more passionate about golf as well as the community of Warren members here. It’s been a wonderful place that has opened opportunities to make great friends and fellow lovers of the game.

And so with this, I would like to say I am honoured to be in the Committee to help the leaders of Warren to make golf more enjoyable and memorable for all the members here.”

To Its Rescue!A poor little white-bellied sea eagle was trapped high up in our Driving Range netting on 8 July 2016 and much as the Club staff tried to free it by shaking the netting, efforts were futile. Fortunately, our little Warren member, Charles Soh, who was at the Driving Range the next day, contacted the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES) who successfully saved the eagle! Great job, ACRES!

Warren Golf & Country Club’sFamily Day & Charity Carnival- Close to $13,000 Raised for

Lions Home for the Elders

Lion Shirley Lee (Director, Volunteer Outreach/Management), 2nd VDG Jeffrey Yang (2nd Vice-Chairman) and PDG Isabel Cheong (Chairman) from Lions Home for the Elders receiving the mock cheque from President Patrick Kwek, Social Convenor Rhena Tan and General Manager Jinder Aujla.

It was a day of family, friends and fun for all who were with us at our Family Day & Charity Carnival held on 5th June this year!

This year, the event was made exceptionally meaningful as a charity element was incorporated into the programme for the very first time. Fundraising efforts at the Club started a couple of weeks prior to the Family Day in which our Club members generously made cash donations in support of this meaningful cause. On Family Day itself, aside from bazaar stores, stage performances and games, a number of fundraising activities were held such as charity game and sales booths, charity bowl, dedication of karaoke songs with live band etc. All proceeds went towards the Lions Home for the Elderly.

At the end of the event, close to $13,000 was raised and for that, we thank all our members and their families & friends for their big hearts! The funds have been used to purchase two nursing beds, a food processor and special milk feed.

The Club is indeed very glad to be able to do our bit for charity and improve the lives of the elderly at Lions Home for the Elderly!

“I’m writing to highly commend Elgin Ong (Marcom & Membership Manager), Cheryl Tan (Marcom & Membership Officer) and Md Suhail (Membership Executive).

I approached the team last week for help in selling a ladies membership belonging to my mum, who recently passed away. They were sensitive and patient in guiding me on the procedures, and proactively gave me advice on the membership sale.

As my family is in urgent financial need, the team had to address multiple calls from my mum’s friends asking about the case. But they were happy to help throughout, and they even assured me on related matters such as cessation of subscription fee.

I feel grateful for their professional support, without which this matter would be emotionally draining for me to handle. Seeing such competent yet compassionate service, I would have no hesitation in recommending Warren CC to interested parties in the future.”

wapping soccer boots with putting irons has been a real game-changer for Warren junior golfer Jeryl Tan (16 years of age).

“It’s a good trade-off,” says Jeryl, “I think I chose what is right for me.”

He is now studying and plying his skills hitting the fairways in Australia to gain more experience and competition exposure. Setting his sight on bigger things, he hopes to play alongside the bests in the sport some time in the future.

Back home in Singapore for a term break from studies, we catch up with Jeryl as he shares his passion for the sport and his first major golf tournament far away from home - Perth.

S

For many young boys, once they got into soccer, it would be hard to kick the passion. How did the switch to golf come about? My dad introduced me to golf. I was just four years old. I was throwing golf balls at the driving range before I actually learnt hitting them with a golf club, and it was then that I fell in love with the sport. When I was seven, I also became interested in soccer and even represented my school in a soccer match. I was on the field as a striker but every time I got the ball, I wouldn’t know what to do with it. It was then that I knew soccer wasn’t the game for me. So it was back to my first love - golf.

You’ve had some impressive games, especially the NSRCC Junior Open 2015 and the National Ranking 2015, clinching 2nd position on both occasions. Tell us about the experience. Those were the 2 best tournaments I played. Going into the NSRCC Junior, I felt really confident with my game although I wasn’t hitting the ball well. On the final day, I was trailing the leader by 5 shots but managed to close the gap to just 2. I achieved my personal best gross score of 69 and won 2nd position in my division. What surprised me most was that although I didn’t hit the ball well, I managed to get good results. Those two tournaments really showed me that I do not have to always hit good shots to score well.

Do you have other memorable sporting moments as a schoolboy? That would have to be clinching the title for my school in the last league of the youth golf competition. Shooting the day’s lowest gross score of 71 - that moment is one that I will never forget.

How has the Warren Junior Programme helped you? With all the different teaching methods used during training, the Warren Junior Programme has really helped me to raise my game to another level. The coaches provided me with great guidance that helped me become a better golfer with a better attitude. Muru Golf Academy and its head coach Mr Murugiah also helped me along in this journey. He was my coach when I first started.

‘It’s a Whole Different

Ball Game”Jeryl lining up his next move in Australia.

Profile Feature

Who inspired you as a schoolboy, and why?The person that inspired me the most has to be former national player Jerome Ng. His attitude towards the game and his ability to score are truly amazing. He has guided me through my journey and has supported me as an athlete, taking me to where I am today.

What are your aspirations for the future? If everything goes well I would love to turn professional and compete in the PGA Web.Com Tour. If that works out, I will earn my PGA TOUR card that gives me the rite of passage to compete against the bests in the world!

Tell us how has your journey been in golf?I’ve had my ups and downs. There was a period where I was losing confidence in my playing. But along the way I met my coaches Justin Han and Jerome Ng and we started to work on my weaknesses, which really improved my game. They really helped me to grow mentally and physically. Not forgetting my parents who have been supporting me unconditionally since the beginning. With all their help and support, I eventually got inducted into SGA’s Development Squad.

Share with us a bit about your experience training or competing in Australia. It’s a whole different ball game in Australia. You have to hit different kinds of shots in different weather conditions. It was a real eye-opening experience. Competitions there are much tougher. When I played the WA Amateur in Perth, I really didn’t know what to expect. I was competing against some of the best amateurs in the world. The course condition was tough.

The wind was strong. I struggled at the first few holes, missing the greens; but after a while I adjusted well and played really decent golf.

To be honest I really wasn’t nervous at all. The only thing in my mind was “This is my first tournament in Australia so let’s try to make a name for myself”. Having this mindset really helped me to enjoy my game and also raised my playing a level up.

I also took part in the pennants which are similar to the SGA Inter-Club League games, but a lot more competitive. One has to make birdies to win a hole or sometimes to tie the hole. So for the most parts, things are much tougher there in Australia.

Tales

The group of 13 of us took a five-hour flight to Perth in August 2016 for holiday and golfing!

Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It has an estimated population of more than 2 million. We arrived at the tail end of winter with cool, slightly wet weather and an average daily temperature of 16˚C. Perth’s combination of big-city attractions with relaxed and informal atmosphere offers a lot for us to do.

We played at Warren’s reciprocal clubs - Royal Perth Golf Club and the The Vines Resort. The Vines has two interesting championship 18-hole courses - The Lakes and Ellenbrook, which are located in the picturesque Swan Valley. The staff of these reciprocal clubs were friendly and helpful in facilitating our games. The accommodation at The Vines Resort is cosy and comfortable. We were happy to have the presence of many kangaroos hopping around to ‘support’ us during our games!

We also had a round of game at two public golf courses - The Point Walter Golf Club and The Cut Golf Resort. In particular, The Cut is a links golf course, which draws similarities to the great links courses of Scotland where the annual British Opens are typically held. While it is a very challenging course to play with strong winds and rain to contend with, the beauty of this golf course lies in its spectacular rolling dunes and the stunning view of noisy clashing waves from the Indian Ocean.

Besides golfing, we went to visit Fremantle, a famous seaside town located at the mouth of Swan River, about half an hour’s drive from Perth. It is well known for its maritime history with Victorian architecture and a well-preserved prison to house British convicts during its early days. A must-do here is to visit the iconic Fremantle Market where its hall has been filled with exotic aromas, fresh produce, fashion, live music, performance art, crafts and indigenous art.

We would like to share our travel stories with you in these photos.

Warren Kids’ Club Inaugural

Birthday PartySunday 24 July 2016

Our joyfully active bunch of kids!

The July Babies! Totally engrossed in his game of five stones.

Trying their hands at Chongkak. Making their own zero point.

Learning to make origami.

Some of the parents who also joined in the fun.

A big thanks to all the parents who were with us that afternoon too.Let’s see who has the biggest bubble!

The Warren Kids’ Club held its inaugural party, “Fun with Origami”, on that Sunday afternoon at the Children’s Indoor Playroom with 44 of its members!

Everyone present also celebrated the birthdays of our July babies namely Gerald Lau (12 years old), Cassandra Tan (10), Candice Toh (8), Ethan Hung (7) and Darsh V Roshith (5).

The little ones had fun learning how to make origami, playing old school games like five stones, zero point, Kuti Kuti and Gasing. What’s more. Each of them went home beaming with joy, holding in their hands an old school game of their choice.

Look at all the fun that everyone’s having... Sign up your kids for the Warren Kids’ Club if you haven’t and let them rule!

There will be anofficial launch for theWarren Kids’Club on

Saturday 8 October 2016!Look out for more information

Pasar @ WarrenTuesday 9 August 2016

The Club’s Main Lobby was a scene of a mini pasar on National Day as 11 booths displayed and sold a good mix of products such as pastries, drones, fashion accessories and pre-loved items!

Visit to SPCAFriday 24 June 2016

18 members spent a very meaningful morning at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) which is now located just opposite our golf course on Sungei Tengah Road. They learnt about the abuse of animals and how they can play a part in stopping or preventing this cruelty. What was most exciting was of course the chance to visit the adorable sheltered animals who are all waiting to find a new home.

Some of our members even applied to be volunteers of the SPCA at the end of the visit!

An introduction to the SPCA.

Just some of the animals at the SPCA.

Our members at the entrance of the SPCA.
