GAME NOTES

CAPTAIN OF THE #SKYTEAMSenior Godwin Igwebuike will lead an experienced group of defensive backs this season and was honored as an Associated Press All-America Preseason Second-Team selection. Igwebuike was also named to the Thorpe Award Watch List, given annually to the nation's top defensive back. The Pickerington, Ohio, native is ranked second among active FBS defensive backs with 163 career solo tackles after making a career-high 78 solo stops (108 total) in 2016.

A WELCOMED RETURNSenior cornerback Keith Watkins II will return to the starting lineup Saturday afternoon after missing all of his 2016 season due to injury. Watkins started just two games as a sophomore in 2015, but finished tied for second among cornerbacks with 41 tackles.

RULERS OF THE SKYSenior safety Kyle Queiro and junior cornerback Montre Hartage will round out the starting secondary for Assistant Head Coach and defensive backs coach Jerry Brown. Queiro made a career-high 53 tackles and intercepted a pair of passes as a junior, including the game-sealing pick in the Pinstripe Bowl. Hartage was pushed into a starting role last season when Watkins went down to injury and went on to make 60 tackles and lead the team with five interceptions. His five interceptions are the most of any returning defensive back in the Big Ten.

NATE HALL Y'ALLWith the departure of fourth-round draft pick Anthony Walker, Jr., to the Indianapolis Colts, junior linebacker Nate Hall will look to lead the linebacker corps as the most experienced of the bunch. Hall quietly made a career-high 73 tackles last season, posting six tackles for loss in the process. He started eight games at the Sam linebacker position last season, making at least five tackles in nine games, including a season-high eight at Minnesota and versus Illinois.

EYES ON THE RECORD BOOK

JUSTIN JACKSON WATCH

MOTOR ALONG MOTENSophomore running back John Moten IV returns after a breakout redshirt freshman season in 2016 that saw him rush for 340 yards on 53 carries, twice earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Moten was key for the Wildcats down the stretch, rushing for a combined 247 yards on 30 carries in wins over Purdue and Illinois.

THE NEXT AUSTIN CARR? After setting program records with 1,247 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, Austin Carr's graduation and signing with the New England Patriots left a void to fill in the Wildcats' passing game. Fortunately for Clayton Thorson, senior superback Garrett Dickerson, senior wide receiver Macan Wilson and junior wide receiver Flynn Nagel all return after posting career-best numbers in 2016. Dickerson earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors after making 34 catches for 318 yards and ranking second among league tight ends with five touchdown receptions. Nagel finished second on the team behind Carr with 40 receptions for 447 yards and two scores, and Wilson led all players with a 13.9 yard-per-catch average.

MORE ON THE BALL CARRIERSenior running back Justin Jackson was named to watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Doak Walker, Walter Camp and the Wuerrfel Trophy. He was also named a nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team. With 1,000 yards rushing in his senior season, Justin Jackson would join Wisconsin's Ron Dayne (1996-99) as the only players in Big Ten history to rush for 1,000-plus yards in all four seasons.

HE GOES, WE GOJustin Jackson has rushed for 100-plus yards 20 times during his career with the Wildcats posting a 16-4 mark when he hits the century mark on the ground. In fact, Jackson's success on the ground has truly been the driving force behind Wildcats' victories the last three years. In the 22 wins during his career, Jackson has averaged 26.9 carries and 134.5 rushing yards per game, while averaging just 16.4 carries and 73.1 rushing yards per game in 16 losses.

KICKING COMPETITIONAfter the Wildcats attempted the third fewest field goals among FBS programs last season, they will turn to true freshman Charlie Kuhbander in the opener versus Nevada. Kuhbander won an open kicking competition during training camp after coming in as the third-ranked kicker in the nation for 2017 by Kohl's Kicking and No. 5 kicker in the nation by both 24/7 and Scout. The Springboro, Ohio, native could become the first NU freshman kicker to attempt an extra point or field goal in a season opener since Slade Larscheid versus Kansas on August 30, 2003.

ONE LAST GO AROUNDAfter stepping into a starting role midway through last season, senior linebacker Brett Walsh will look to build upon his strong finish as he embarks on his final season for Chicago's Big Ten Team. Walsh made just two tackles in the first seven games last season, but stepped up when called upon by racking up 35 tackles over the final six games. Walsh made a career-high nine tackles in a win at Purdue and picked up eight tackles apiece versus Wisconsin and Minnesota.

DEGREE IN HANDThe National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame released a list of 952 student-athletes who have already earned their undergraduate degrees and will be playing college football this fall while pursuing second diplomas, and the Northwestern Football program led the way with 18 members.

BACK TO RETURNSenior wide receiver and kick return specialist Solomon Vault will miss the entire 2017 season due to offseason surgery and is expected to return to the Wildcats in 2018. The ’Cats will have to replace a two-time All-Big Ten selection that holds the NU single-season kick return touchdown record (2) and career kick return touchdown record (4). Junior wide receiver Jelani Roberts (1 career return for 19 yards) and sophomore running back John Moten IV (0 career returns) are expected to get the first opportunity to step into the role.

IN THE TRENCHESNorthwestern returns three starters on the offensive line, including 2017 Rimington Trophy Watch List selection senior Brad North. The Rimington Trophy is given annually to the nation's top center. Junior guard Tommy Doles also returns after starting all 13 games last season. Junior Blake Hance, who has started 22 consecutive games at left tackle, is listed as the starting left guard on the depth chart for week one versus Nevada.

Already the second-longest tenured Big Ten head coach at the age of 42, Pat Fitzgerald's 11 seasons at the helm of Northwestern have been spent building upon the tradition he helped establish as a Hall-of-Fame linebacker for the Wildcats in the mid-1990's. Characterized by his motivational skills, enthusiasm and passion for all things Northwestern, Fitzgerald has shaped Chicago's Big Ten Team into one that consistently achieves excellence in all three phases of the student-athlete experience: academics, athletics and community outreach.

Taking over as head coach in 2006 after the sudden passing of his friend and mentor, Randy Walker, Fitzgerald provided leadership and stability in a trying time and has continued Walker's legacy of producing winning football teams while preparing young men for long-term success in life.

Fitzgerald has led the Wildcats to seven bowl appearances in his 11 seasons and has guided the ’Cats to two of their three bowl wins in program history. Most recently, Chicago's Big Ten Team defeated No. 23 Pittsburgh in the 2016 New Era Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium, 31-24. After a slow 1-3 start to the season, the Wildcats won six of their last nine games to finish the 2016 season with a winning record of 7-6 for the sixth time under Fitzgerald.

The fifth-year seniors of the 2016 class became the first group in program history to earn a pair of bowl victories with their wins in the Pinstripe Bowl and TaxSlayer Bowl in 2013.

Away from the gridiron, Fitzgerald's players have achieved at the highest levels in the classroom, last fall placing a record 39 players on the Academic All-Big Ten team en route to posting a program-record 3.14 GPA for the 2016-17 academic year. In 2012, Northwestern collected top national honors in the AFCA Academic Achievement Award for the seventh time since 1998. Additionally, Fitzgerald's program ranked second among all FBS programs in the recently released multi-year Academic Progress Rating (APR), posting a score of 992 out of a possible 1,000 in the measure of player retention and eligibility.

Beginning in January 2018, Fitzgerald will begin a three-year term as a member of the National Football Foundation's Board of Directors.

As a player in 1995, Fitzgerald was the leader of a suffocating Wildcats defensive unit that led the nation in scoring defense and anchored NU's storybook run to the Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl. He capped the year by winning both the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards as the nation's top defensive player and also was the Big Ten, Chevrolet and Sports Illustrated Defensive Player of the Year. Fitzgerald accomplished all of this despite suffering a broken leg in the penultimate regular-season game.

Fitzgerald recovered from that injury and in 1996 he again led the Wildcats to a share of the Big Ten title. He repeated as recipient of the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards, becoming the first two-time winner of both honors and laying the groundwork for his selection in 2008 to the College Football Hall of Fame. A two-time first-team All-American, Fitzgerald started 23 career games and totaled 299 tackles, including 20 for loss. He also forced five fumbles and intercepted three passes.

A graduate of Orland Park's (Ill.) Carl Sandburg High School and a 2003 inductee to the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame, Fitzgerald resides in Northfield with his wife, Stacy, and three sons, Jack, born in November 2004, Ryan, born in September 2006, and Brendan, born in February 2009.
