A Tribute to Woody GuthrieFriday, September 4 at 3pmOne hour of a life and songs that celebrates the contributions Guthrie made in understanding the plight of the poor, the dispossessed and the hungry here in North America during the Great Depression of the 30’s and beyond...His music examined the reason fascism needed to be opposed by people all over the world, and his children’s music celebrated family and a happy childhood. Woody Guthrie’s contributions to roots music created many standard tunes for folk music, and oriented acousitic popular music upwards to refer to the oppression of the poor, the politics of hate and racism and the need for Freedom to defeat Fascism... Woody did these things authentically with a voice that still speaks to the heart and will never die.

Monday, August 24 through Friday, Septem-ber 4, Norman Gilliland reads Northland: A 4,000-Mile Journey Along America’s Forgot-ten Border by Porter Fox.
Travel writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In Northland, he blends a deeply reported and beautifully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels.
Monday, September 7 through Friday, September 23, Karl Schmidt reads The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger.
In October 1991, three weather systems collided off the coast of Nova Scotia to create a storm of singular fury, boasting waves over one hundred feet high. Among its victims was the Gloucester, Massachusetts-based swordfishing boat the Andrea Gail, which vanished with all six crew members aboard. “The Perfect Storm” is a real-life thriller that will leave readers with the taste of salt air on their tongues and a sense of terror of the deep.
