As isolated and alone as we sometimes feel in law school, those who care about us in the real world feel isolated from us as well. This thought occurred to me today as I was having a cup of coffee with my father. To my surprise, it was evident that he missed me. I am living closer to my family now than I have since high school, yet in some ways, I am even more disconnected. It’s as if I was too busy to realize that my stress could be affecting him in any way.
I started thinking about “Make a Difference Week” and how the sentiment of “making a difference” is incredibly broad. We all positively or negatively make a difference with almost every decision we make and act or omission we perform. You can make a difference on a large scale by focusing on social justice work, or you can make a small difference by smiling at me in the library when I’ve been working on The Grapevine for 3 hours.
As well as participating in the planned activities for the week, I’m going to take the words of Mother Teresa to heart and work on the small things that I can do to make a difference. I am going to make an effort this week to point out to people who make a difference in my life that I care about them, even when I’m too busy to say it. Just thinking about all the people I could thank helps remind me that I’m not so alone and isolated after all.
Have a good week, Santa Clara.
SBA BOARD
Sincerely, Caitlin E. Robinett
