ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP through our organ of intuition W e have arrived at a stage in humanity where there is a strong desire to re-connect our bodies with our Spirit. In the past century, most technological and medical advancements were based on a science of materialism and a relatively new human faculty called ‘analytical thinking’. Although many positive advancements came out of this scientific age, it has also been the cause of much of our own (physical and spiritual) destruction. This has culminated to a general attitude about our physical state and wellbeing one that looks at human beings as physical specimens of study where the focus is on an illness and not the unique soul of an individual. We have been serving these illnesses instead of trying to understand their core causes. Evidence of this reasoning is present in the way we name and design our institutions. For exam- ple, the word hospital in the German language is ‘Krankenhaus’ which means ‘Ill-People’s-Home’. Why is it that we make the emphasis on illness instead of health? Why not use the name ‘Health House’? Most hospital buildings of the last century have been built without any notion of what the patient’s soul and spirit needs. They are like factories for the sick with their cold and lifeless materials, fluorescent lighting, metallic machinery and rigid room layouts. We are slowly starting to understand that these illnesses are arising because of our unhealthy environments, unbalanced diets and fundamentally because of a disconnection from the Whole and our Spirit. In this century, we can see a change in our attitude about health through a redis- covery of holistic practices such as yoga, ayurveda, homeopathy, reiki, acunpuncture etc. But, today this new impulse needs to be fully expressed in the spaces of our physical world - through an architecture of a new consciousness. We have arrived at a stage in humanity where there is a strong desire to re-connect our bodies with our Spirit. In the past century, most technological and medical advancements were based on a science of materialism and a relatively new human faculty called ‘analytical thinking’. Although many positive advancements came out of this scientific age, it has also been the cause of much of our own (physical and spiritual) destruction. This has culminated to a general attitude about our physical state and wellbeing;; one that looks at human beings as physical specimens of study where the focus is on an illness and not the unique soul of an individual. We have been serving these illnesses instead of trying to understand their core causes.

Evidence of this reasoning is present in the way we name and design our institutions. For exam-ple, the word hospital in the German language is ‘Krankenhaus’ which means ‘Ill-People’s-Home’. Why is it that we make the emphasis on illness instead of health? Why not use the name ‘Health House’? “The only real valuable thing is intuition.” - Albert Einstein

So how do we prepare for this task?

The Key is Intuition. There is a faculty within us that has an entirely new ability to reach whole truths and it has reached its strongest potential in humanity at this present stage on earth. This new potential is the gift of intuition. But, this faculty of intuition needs to be carefully trained otherwise it dies away.

The best place to begin this task is where the smallest and most delicate arrives into the world, the place where new life is born. A space to house the miracle of birth. What kind of surrounding and shelter would this space need? How should this space for the arrival of new Life be different than a space for Healing or for Death?

Once we change our attitude and focus on the uplifting forces of LIFE more than the desconstruc-tive material forces of illness and DEATH, a whole new possibility for a space filled with spirit and growth arises. It is a matter of deeply connecting with these life-giving forces in such a way that they will remain active in our souls for a long time to come. And thus, these forces will begin to take form in the spaces we design for the health and birth of humanity.

During this interdisciplinary course, we will train our faculty of intuition through simple practical exercises that will unleash our artistic potential to create healthy and joy filled spaces for human growth.

“How can we find a new way in architecture of unifying the ever different and constantly changing

influences of nature, function and the unique needs of the users? How do we create an organism

as a synthesis of these 3 sources?” Coppenrath’s life experiences finally lead him to the universal

tool of Intuition.

As a German born architect from the West, who lived and worked in Eastern European cites like Kiev and Warsaw, one of Coppenrath’s main achievements is developing an architectural design method which finds a balance between the Eastern and Western attitudes. In addition, his design approach or focus is on an architecture which really develops out of a strong sense of the deeper needs of the user - the human being - thus giving the building a soul again! It is a method which aims to create space around the practical and spiritual needs of human beings. The work of Coppenrath is also an exploration of buildings as a ‘Body’ or ‘Organism’. He sees the building as a visual sculpture or expression of the Spiritual Being - the being of the Site, Fam-ily, Group or Institution. His architectural and pedagogical approach is constantly growing and evolving and can never be categorized or labelled as having a certain ‘style’.

Reinhard Coppenrath has given several workshops on Organic Architecture and Practical Intuition in various cities such as, Kiev, Budapest, Munich, Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague and Izmir.

He lived and worked as a teach-er and architect for 13 years in Poland and Ukraine where he deep-ened his knowledge in the field of alternative pedagogy, language, dance and architecture. For the past 25 years Coppenrath has been working on this question:
