However you choose to celebrate, there’s little doubt you’ll have plenty to choose from!

With its roots honouring Canadian work-ers, Labour Day also gives the Victoria Labour Council an opportunity to get together for its 23rd Labour Day Picnic on Monday, a day that has been special for workers since it was declared a holiday in 1894. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. families can enjoy kids’ games, clowns and refreshments and more at Irving Park, at the corner of Menzies and Michigan.

Long-weekend highlights for many families start with the Saanich Fair, this year mark-ing 144 years celebrating the Peninsula’s agri-cultural community. In 2011, that celebra-tion still includes a whole host of agricultural displays and competitions, but those events are joined by modern festivities, including a midway, entertainment, dog shows and much more.

If your interests lay more in the enter-tainment arena, head to downtown Victoria, where the 25th annual Victoria Fringe Festival continues through Sept. 4.

Around the Inner Harbour this weekend is the Vancouver Island Blues Bash, hosted by the Victoria Jazz Society and welcoming tick-eted headliners Lucky Peteron and the Charlie Musselwhite Band in addition to a host of free afternoon concerts at the Ship Point stage.

Also at Ship Point, and a highlight of the summer season for sailing fans and history buffs alike, is the annual Classic Boat Festival.

Prefer something a little quieter? Take advantage of what promises to be a sensa-tional, sunny long-weekend and visit the region’s many parks and beaches.

So, no matter how you choose to spend your Labour Day weekend, do it safely, have fun and enjoy summer’s last hurrah!

One of the Capital Region’s favourite end-of-summer events returns this Labour Day weekend – for a remarkable 144th year.

The Saanich Fair, running from Saturday through Monday at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Stellys X Road, is must for many families, whether it’s perusing the colourful agricultural displays or getting up close and personal with an array of farm animals.

Then there’s the entertainment, the food, the midway rides...what better way to finish the summer season!

An old-fashioned fair, kids of all ages enjoy strolling through the rabbits and chickens, marvelling at the many different varieties. See sheep being sheared, cows being milked and many other introductions to farming life.

Other weekend highlights include old-fashioned horse buggies, Highland dancing, a fun-filled dog show and much more. Fancy yourself a creative handyman? Don’t miss the Duct Tape Contest!

For those looking for a wilder time, look no further that the thrilling rides of the West Coast Amusements midway.

Admission to the grounds is $10 for adults or $7 for seniors and youth on Saturday and Sunday, with or $9/$6 on Monday. (Children age six and younger are free). A variety of midway prices and packages available.

Send your summer out with a colourful bang this Sat-urday, Sept. 3 with the conclusion of this year’s Summer Firework Saturdays at the Butchart Gardens.

Since the first fireworks display at the Gardens in 1977, the show has thrilled guests with a beautiful show enjoyed from the Concert Lawn.

This Saturday’s fireworks get under way at 8:45 p.m., promising a dazzling show that combines a unique blend

of spectacle and music. Visitors are encouraged to bring warm clothing and, if desired, a

cover to sit upon on the ground. Pets should be left at home on these nights as they may be frightened by the noise.

There is no extra charge for the Saturday Fireworks, but admission to the Gar-

“Un-juried, un-censored and un-forgettable,” the Victoria Fringe Festival concludes its 25th anniversary, non-stop, 12-days of com-edy, improv, drama, performance art and dance this Labour Day.

As the last curtain drops this Monday, more than 60 shows and 420 individual performances will have graced local stages over the festival’s 11 days.

Hosted by Intrepid Theatre, the third oldest Fringe Fes-tival in Canada expanded this year to 13 different venues to the Garden City, including new venues at the Canadian Col-lege of Performing Arts in Oak Bay and the Dance Victoria studios in Quadra Village.

“The size of the Fringe audience has increased by nearly 50 per cent over the last two years, so we decided it was time to make room for eight extra shows and establish an outdoor hub for the festival to quench Victoria’s thirst for all things Fringe. Celebrate the end of summer by rockin’ and groovin’ to live blues, R’n’B and more at the 17th annual Vancouver Island Blues Bash, Sept. 3 to 5.

In addition to three afternoons of free performances at Ship Point, including Summer and the Sinners, Victoria Soul Gospel Choir, Sandy Bone & the Break-down and The Midnights, headlining the ticketed evening performances are harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite, Sept. 3, and triple-threat blues sensation Lucky Peterson, Sept. 4.

Classic boat enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend as the 34th annual Classic Boat Festival sails into the Inner Harbour.

From the official commencement at noon today (Friday, Sept. 2) to the Sunday morn-ing sail-past, this is a Labour Day weekend event mariners look forward each summer.

The festival opens today with the arrival of the Honourary Commodore welcoming classic boats of all shapes and sizes to the Inner Harbour.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, take in the Classic Rowing Regatta from 10 a.m. to noon. Boats will launch from the Gorge Rowing and Pad-dling Club, starting the race just before the Gorge Narrows, and with the finish line at

the Undersea Gardens. Stay near the harbour for the Saturday

afternoon Steam Boat Parade, casting off at about 2 p.m. and delighting spectators as they cruise the Gorge Waterway.

Head downtown Sunday morning to see the vessels in action for the Sunday Sail-past, beginning at about 10:30 a.m. A good view of the boats can be had from locations around the Causeway and walkways to the Breakwater.

Races follow in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m., including the annual Schooner Cup and Classic Open Sail races.
