catch the iron eagles in the skyBy jAn MyeRsThe 2010 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show on

Sept. 18 will offer amazing aerobatic acts from across the country including Bill Gordon and Billy Segalla of The Iron Eagles Aerobatics. The Iron Eagles are one of the most exciting and dynamic teams in the air show industry today. These two men have combined their piloting skills into the most challenging and closest formation team that you will see performed at air shows anywhere in the world. From their crossfire takeoff, to the switchblade hammerhead and the close head-on maneuvers, missing just feet apart, their fast-paced action will keep you on the edge of your seat. You’ll see and meet The Iron Eagles at The 2010 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show on Sept. 18 at Coshocton’s Richard Downing Airport. The event runs from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Spectators will also enjoy Dave Dacy & Tony Kazian-The Super Stearman WingWalking Team; The Misty Blues All-woman Skydiving Team; teenage aerobatic pilot Jason Flood; stunt flyer Jim ‘Fang’ Maroney in his DeHavilland Super Chipmunk, an A10 Warthog Demonstration, and many other surprises in the air. At 11 a.m., the Opening Ceremonies get underway including a B2 Stealth Bomber flyby. Around 11:30 a.m., the Flags of Honor ceremony will pay tribute to Ohio’s military heroes who have been killed in the current conflict. In this powerfully moving ceremony, the names of each person killed are read as an American flag is erected for each person. Following the Flags of Honor ceremony, a veteran’s tribute will honor all US military veterans and especially those in the audience. All veterans and their families are encouraged to attend. The Air Show will take to the skies at approximately 2 p.m. Throughout the day, visitors will also enjoy musical entertainment, static displays, food vendors, helicopter rides, the popular Kids Zone Fun Area, and bird shows from the Ohio Bird Sanctuary. Presale tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children and are available at www.VisitCoshocton.com, at the Chamber of Commerce Building, 401 Main Street in Coshocton and at the Richard

Downing Airport, 24569 Airport Road, in Coshocton. Tickets will also be available at the gate. Admission at the gate to the Sept. 18 event will be $7 for adults and $3 for children under 10. For more information, go to www.coshoctonairport.com or call (740) 622-2252.

uniteD wAy executiVe DiRectoRHave you heard about the removal of playground swings in Cabell County, West Virginia? According to the website, www.wvgazette.com, the swing sets are being removed this fall due to recent lawsuits and cost concerns over properly maintaining the protective barriers around them. Now, I bring this up because I thought it might be interesting to see how something like this has changed over the years. If you watch Jeff Foxworthy much at all, you have no doubt seen – (there is a DVD!) the segment where he talks about family vacations where he and his brother are sequestered in the back of the family station wagon. Facing backwards and laying a blanket as far away from the parental unit as possible. So, let’s wind the clock back to my days in elementary school on the playground. Ah, yes, kinda brings a tear to my eye. And I know there are some of my former teachers that avidly read The Beacon. They may or may not know this. And we are not advocating this type of behavior kids! So don’t do it. Basically, we would play the game of “dodge ‘em” on the playground during recess. As a group of kids would swing on the swing set, other kids (like me) would have to run through the swings to the relative safety of the poles in the center. Now, this feat was typically possible only because the kids swinging – usually the girls – would be going as high as they could go, thus the timing could be off a pinch. And these swings

had the heavy chains for support so naturally you could get tangled up that way as well. I can only recall a couple of incidents where someone got knocked down or lost a tooth or too. We just chalked those things up to being a kid and probably luck. Not anymore.

As Milton Elementary Principal Kim Cooper said, “We’re living in a sue-happy society, which is sad that we’ve let it come down to affecting kids at this level with lawyers”. Now, I’m not advocating a lack of preventive maintenance, unsafe practices or the common sense which would dictate what type equipment should be on a playground. Sometimes an article or tidbit of news just allows me to recollect my younger years. When muscles worked the way they should, back aches did not exist and you could still imagine a fire breathing dragon or puppy dog in the clouds as you reached for the limits of the sky on the playground swing. Focusing on the more near at hand, the Wine Festival is this weekend and the Air Show takes off on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 9 am with a plethora of activities for kids of all ages. The Air Show program is inside this issue of The Beacon with all the details on parking, flyovers, air show schedule and more. Let’s get out and support our local airport, businesses and provide the encouragement to those that are working hard to make Coshocton County a better place to live, work and play.

christian comedian to perform at River View high school By Beth DulAneyImagine mixing Chris Rock with Billy Graham. Well, if you could, then you’d have Keith Deltano. Keith is a Christian comedian who has been speaking with teens since 1993. His high energy and hilarious observations about the life of a typical American teenager have been changing lives for over ten years. His show entitled, Defy Conformity, will be presented at the River View High School on Thursday, Sept. 16. There will be morning show for junior and high school students dealing with bullying and a separate show in the evening for the community that deals with peer pressure that can lead to bad decisions. The doors to the evening show will open at 6:30 p.m. with free pizza and pop. The show will begin at 7 p.m. Eddie Gallagher and Mr. Chuck Rinkes, principal of the River View High School, had been looking for a motivational speaker for the students this year. They both agreed to do some research, and almost by accident, Gallagher stumbled upon Keith’s Web site. Gallagher said he liked the idea of using comedy to discuss serious issues that today’s teens face on a daily basis. Gallagher said he also liked the fact that Keith used to be an educator. Defy Conformity is an in-your-face kind of show that deals with how not to conform with the modern ideal of a typical teenager such

as sex, drugs, and alcohol, which almost always steam from

peer pressure and our culture. Because of this, Keith wanted to stress that this show is not for young children. Keith loves to talk with teens and will be available to talk with the student body after the two morning assemblies. “I’m hoping they see that they have what it takes to stand up to peer pressure and analyze popular culture,” Keith said, “I hope they take a look at the culture they’re in. I want culture-savvy teens to lead. Sex sells and I want teens to understand that sex sells lies and that they don’t have to buy those lies.” Keith wanted to stress that although he is a Christian comedian, the two morning performances in the schools will be secular. He encourages teens that even if they are against his religion or what he says, to listen to what he has to say. “I hope they all say, ‘Oh yes! We’ll do this!’,” Gallagher said, “Having people pause and think about the things they’re doing and take a step back from that and think about, ‘Why am I doing the things I’m doing?’ A lot of times, that leads to better responses. I think a lot of times, we just react, but we don’t think it through. If we would just think about it, it would lead us to better responses.” Admission to the evening program is free with free pizza and pop at 6:30 p.m. To learn more about Keith Deltano, visit his Web site at www.defyconformity.com.

Autumn healthcare to have 6th annual Autumn Days FestivalThe 6th annual Autumn Days Festival will be Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Autumn Healthcare located at 1991 Otsego Ave. Events throughout the day will include the Shilo Baptist Church food stand with ribs and fish dinners. Entertainment will include

H.I.S., Jerry Weaver and his banjo, The Walhonding Rube Band, and Coshocton’s own American Idol, Kellie Young. There will be free games and prizes for the children, including a cake walk, face painting, clowns, petting zoo and a coloring contest. Local vendor and crafters will be on

sew Right By MARk FoRtuneMembers of the Sew & So’s 4-H club donated 28 gowns to Hospice of Coshocton County on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the local Hospice office. The Sew & So’s 4-H club started in 1960. Ten members of the club, three club advisors,

several parents and participants from the local Canal Quilters group made the gowns from fabric donated by the Canal Quilters, who also donated funds to purchase additional fabric. Club advisors are Betsy Brown, Susan Brouse and Paula Hathaway. Twenty one adult and seven child size gowns were donated with Cathy Hudson representing Hospice. Hudson told the club about the Hospice mission and what the organization does for people, patients and families right here in Coshocton County. The club made the brightly colored gowns for Hospice patients as part of their community service mission. Patrick Brouse, a member of the club, commented, “It felt really good to help people with cancer because I know the gowns will be going to a good cause”. Annie Bosson, a first year member of the club

remarked, “I felt really good about making a gown. I like people that are in the hospital. I like to see them and visit them. I like to make them happy. I really didn’t know how to sew before doing this”. Bosson said that she was pretty sure she would continue to use the sewing skills she learned while making the gown. S a v a n n a h Brown, a six year club member, said, “I think

that this project in particular really helped myself and the club realize that the need for the gowns was maybe not as crucial as other projects we’ve done but it’s going to make individual people feel a lot better about what they’re going through and we just wanted to help people feel good”. Cathy Hudson, representing Hospice, said that the idea for the project came about when one of the aides that works with Hospice told her that they were about out of gowns. Hudson gently told the members of the club that Hospice works with patients where further treatment is not going to help and their job is to make the patient, “as comfortable as possible”, and that the quality of days is more important than the quantity of days. “We try to do everything we can to make their days, weeks, months, be as good as possible. We try to give them a lot of little perks, doing hair, nails, nice lotion and primping and pampering them. One of the ways we can do that is to give them really pretty gowns like these”. Hudson added, “It is amazing how much a really pretty gown can perk somebody’s spirits up and make their day just a bit brighter. I’m so excited, these are gorgeous and the aides are going to be just delighted.”

Rev. Robert Millspaugh retires from ministryAfter 55 years in the ministry, Rev. Robert Millspaugh is retiring, (again). Rev. Millspaugh and his wife, Grace, have lived in Coshocton for the past 38 years and have served the Coshocton Presbyterian Church for 27 of those years. Prior to moving to Coshocton, Rev. Millspaugh and Grace had always lived within 25 miles of New York City. The Coshocton Presbyterian is the fourth church Millspaugh served in a full-time capacity. He began his career as an assistant pastor at the Rye Presbyterian Church in Rye, New York. He then served as an associate pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, Caldwell, New Jersey and later as the pastor at the First Presbyterian Church, Whippany, New Jersey. Rev. Millspaugh served as pastor at The Coshocton Presbyterian Church from Sept.1, 1972 until Feb.28, 1986, when he retired for the first time. He then was invited back to the Coshocton church to serve as parish associate from July 1, 1993, through Jan. 1, 2000. At that

time, he was asked to serve as interim pastor for one year through Jan. 31, 2001, after which he ‘retired’ again. In September 2004, he was asked to again fill the role of parish associate for the Coshocton Presbyterian Church and has been serving in that capacity ever since. In between ministries at the Coshocton church, Rev. Millspaugh worked extensively in interim ministry, filling in at numerous churches throughout Ohio and Michigan while still maintaining their residence in Coshocton. Rev. Millspaugh says that even though this time his retirement is for real, he will probably continue to serve as a guest minister at various churches in the area. He is active with the United Way and as a Hospice volunteer and plans to continue with these activities as long as he is able. He will remain active in a number of Presbytery activities and will become moderator of the Muskingum Valley Presbytery this December.

Sunday, Sept. 12 will be Rev. Millspaugh’s final Sunday serving as parish associate at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church at 142 N. 4th Street in Coshocton. All friends are encouraged to attend the special service that Sunday, beginning at 10:30 a.m., which will be a day of celebration for the Millspaughs. For more information, contact the Coshocton Presbyterian Church at (740) 622-0486.

picnic commemorates last covered bridgeThe committee that organizes the restoration of the Helmick Covered Bridge in the mid-1900s will be having its community covered dish picnic on the bridge Sunday, Sept. 12 at 12:30 p.m. The public is invited. The Helmick Covered Bridge is Coshocton County’s oldest bridge and the only remaining wooden covered bridge in the area, built in 1863 and restored in 1996 through local volunteer efforts and the support of the state and county. The restoration committee continues to meet annually the second Sunday of each September for a time of fellowship and historic programs. The Helmick bridge is located on County Road 343, just off State Route 60 north of Blissfield.

cool cakes! By Beth DulAneyThe Business and Professional Women (BPW) of Coshocton County had their 5th annual cake auction as part of the last First Friday of the season. Sixty-five cakes and eight items were donated to the auction by local businesses and individuals throughout the community. They all looked delicious and some of them including The Novelty Advertising’s 3D pen-shaped cake and the River View High School Breast Cancer Awareness cake were just amazing! “It’s just amazing!” said Kim Gress, president of BPW, “We are so overwhelmed by the response.” From 1 – 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, people from the community could come in the Civic Hall and vote on the most Unusual Cake and People’s Choice. Volunteers arrived later to count the votes and announced the results at the auction at 7:30 p.m. There was a first, second, and third place winners. Those particular cakes were auctioned off first during the auction by Mary Mason and Sheri Fortune, both of Agents Realty and Auction Service. These cakes usually bring in a lot of money for BPW, which in turn is used to fund their programs such as three working women scholarships, wigs for cancer victims, Christmas Castle project, Dollars for Scholars, 4-H Leadership camp, sweat suits to the hospital for rape and domestic violence victims, Girls

Buckeye State, $500 to First Step, and the BPW co-sponsors Meet the Candidates with the Farm Bureau. They also use the money to sponsor the Administrative Luncheon in April. Last year’s winner for Most Unusual and People’s Choice was the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital’s baby cake. A cake last year also sold for over $200! When asked why people continue to come to the auction year after year, Kim Gress said, “I think it’s the imagination. People are fascinated. I’m fascinated by some of these cakes because there’s no way I could do this. Food is becoming more and more popular now. You’ve got the Food Network and the Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss and I think it’s just the imagination and seeing what other people can come up with and how imaginative people are. And as far as coming to the auction, Mary Mason and Sheri Fortune make it a ball. They are so funny!” (Unfortunately, because of the Labor Day holiday, this edition of the Beacon went to press before the auction took place. Check next week’s Beacon for the winning results.)

parapup helps military kids who are missing their daddyElisa (Vessels) Vertuli, formerly of West Lafayette, lives in Hawaii with her husband and two young children. Her husband is currently serving in the military and when he’s away from home, he’s greatly missed, especially by their two young children. Elisa began looking around for a book for young children about the army, and when she was dissatisfied with her search results, she decided to write a book of her own. Elisa has been known for writing poetry occasionally for a friend’s birthday or any special occasion. So she decided to take her talent and write a book for her children, “ParaPup Reports for Duty”. ParaPup is a very special puppy who delivers top secret messages from military children to their Moms and Dads who are overseas fighting for our freedom. He’s always there when kids are feeling sad and he’s extra good at snuggling. A friend of the Vertuli family had made a puppy for Elisa’s two children out of camouflage material and the kids slept with it every night. So Elisa decided to take her book a step further. With every purchase of her book, a very own ParaPup is included. Elisa said that it took her a year and a half to complete and publish her book and her two kids absolutely love it. She said that sometimes, they leave little notes or drawings with ParaPup at night. That’s when ParaPup springs into action and delivers the letters to Daddy during the night, returning just in time before the kids wake up. Actually, Daddy receives the letters and drawings as soon as he returns home. “I hope this book makes a way for young kids to communicate with Dad when he’s not home,” said Elisa. “ParaPup Reports for Duty” can be found on www.amazon.com by searching “ParaPup”.

coshocton county junior women’s guild to have annual Bargain Fair

By Beth DulAneyThere’s something for everybody at the annual Coshocton County Junior Women’s Guild’s Bargain Fair coming up Friday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds. The Bargain Fair has always been a huge success for the Guild, bringing in at least $1,000. There will be thousands of items at the Bargain Fair including Christmas trees, leaf blowers, luggage carriers, furniture, clothing, toys, books, jewelry, linens, house ware, CDs, and the list goes on. Gift cards from area businesses will also be available. The main attraction this year is a scooter that goes up to 60 mph and includes a leather jacket. There will also be a bake sale with sweet treats from members in the Junior Women’s Guild. All monies raised goes right back into the community. Local organizations can send a letter to the Women’s Guild explaining what they are in need of. The members review the letter and then decide whether or not to give to that particular organization. On average, the Junior Women’s Guild gives to 15 organizations in the community. So come on out to the fairgrounds, get a good deal, and help your community.
