A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR

This week, we say good-bye to Father Remy Matadi, SMA. Fr. Remy has been here for six weeks, which allowed me to take my vacation and retreat. I had the opportunity to meet with the other SMA fathers who have been here helping out in parishes — 14 SMA priests have been here in the Archdiocese for the months of July and August. In order to support Fr. Remy and say thanks, we will take two collections this weekend, the second of which will go to Father’s Order, The Society of African Missions. It is a blessing that we have had a priest from Africa for a number of reasons. The priests from Africa help us to remember that we are part of a worldwide organization that has in common the goal of preaching the Gospel. Fr. Remy, who started out as a parish priest, now works in the area of social justice, trying to teach people and parishes in the country of Kenya how to organize and speak to the government and other leaders to work together to bring justice and, eventually, peace. This is work that goes on around the entire world, and whether you are in Africa, Europe, or here in the United States, the work of justice is always a need. Each year, our Archdiocese sponsors a conference on the principles of justice that we believe in and teach. The principles are based, of course, in Scripture and Tradition. They essentially speak of the dignity of the human person from the moment of conception to natural death. The challenge for us is to live these principles all our lives, whether convenient or inconvenient. We are united in the one purpose of telling the whole world about Jesus Christ and witnessing to His love. It is encouraging to know that this work is going on across the world. Thank you, Fr. Remy, for your presence and help — and thank you for your service as a priest to the people of Kenya. As we move toward the season of fall and start up the new year of ministry, we are excited to continue using the Alpha program as a way to continue to invite people to come to know Jesus Christ. It is a program that allows adults to ask big questions and talk about them in a friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere. I hope all who have not come through the program will consider coming, if only to see what goes on there — and then keep coming, if the Lord is calling you to that. I hope you will also pray that we continue to grow and attract the young people of our community to come and be with us. We have had a number of baptisms this year, which is a good sign, but it is up to all of us to make people feel welcome and create a prayerful, enriching environment that keeps people here. One of the challenges I make to our leadership teams, regardless of what they are leading, is that what we offer should be so good, that we don’t need to require participation in any program — everything we offer is optional, and we hope people always want to opt for our parish because we are faith-filled, welcoming, and joy-filled people. Each of us has that responsibility, because we know what Jesus has done for us, and for all. I am always humbled and astounded that God has invited me, and everyone else, to be part of His Kingdom, but also that God trusts me to share that with others. This is a time of year that people often return to church attendance — and we hope to maximize this time to invite people, especially the young. Thanks to the Thursday night prayer group who took their prayer night onto the lawn and invited anyone walking by the church to sit and sing and pray with them. Evangelizers, every one! Peace, Father Murray

Paz, Padre Murray

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD — HELP NEEDED Wondrous Stories, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word, is offered as ongoing faith formation (in the place of CCD) for children up to 6th grade. During the Mass, kids gather in the parish hall (while their

parents enjoy the readings and homilies at Mass) to learn about the Gospel and our Church. Kids love it, and parents love it! Starting in October, we will offer this ministry during our 9:30 AM Sunday Masses at Immaculate Conception, and we are in need of a team of volunteer leaders for this school year. We’re looking for adults with a love for children and an interest in teaching young kids about Jesus in a safe and fun environment. We’ll train you, and supply all the materials. Interested? Please reach out to Margo Morin, our Pastoral Associate, at [email protected]

MASS WITH HEALING PRAYER

Our monthly Mass with healing prayer is Tuesday night, September 10 at 7:00 PM at Immaculate

Conception. Join us for a beautiful bilingual (Spanish and English) Mass, then stay to receive prayer from our team for healing, or receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. All are welcome to come and receive prayer. To learn more about Catholic healing Masses, visit this site: https://tinyurl.com/cathhealing To learn about the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, visit: www.franciscanmedia.org/sacrament-of-anointing-of-the-sick/

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul will be holding our monthly collection on September 14 and 15, and will be at the church doors after all of the Masses. During the last month, we were blessed to receive $6,139 from our collection boxes and many very generous benefactors. With your gifts, our volunteers were able to bring God’s love and mercy to 21 families, providing $2,125 in rental assistance; $1,930 in utility bill assistance; $3,229 in food assistance; $781 in furniture, and $384 in miscellaneous assistance. Those who benefit from your donations are most appreciative of your generosity.

In the Gospels, we see how Jesus encouraged his followers to treat those in need with mercy. You can also treat the poor with mercy by giving to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Our members then go out two by two to visit those who have called us for assistance and bring your gifts directly to those in need in Salem. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? For more information, please call Karen O'Brien at 978-745-2056. We gratefully acknowledge your generous contributions of money and time to help the poor and suffering in Salem.

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.

Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.

Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.

Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.

Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
