From the desk of Fr. John: DUI - Irish Style
This is for those who asked for a copy of this story I used in last week’s homily; and for those who missed it!
Recently a rou ne Police patrol was parked outside a bar in Donegal Town. A er last call, the officer no ced a man leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely walk. The man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the officer quietly observing.
A er what seemed an eternity, in which he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to find his car and fall into it. He sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons le the bar and drove off.
Finally he started the car, switched the wipers on and off; it was a fine, dry summer night, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of mes, honked the horn and then switched on the lights. He moved the vehicle forward for a few inches, reversed a li le, and then remained s ll for a few more minutes as some more of the other patrons’ vehicles le .
At last, when his was the only car le in the parking lot, he pulled out and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited pa ently all this me, now started up his patrol car put on the flashing lights, and promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test.
To his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all! Dumbfounded, the officer said, “I’ll have to ask you to accompany me to the police sta on. This breathalyzer equipment must be broken.”
“I doubt it,” said Paddy, truly proud of himself. “Tonight I’m the designated decoy” Remember that Jesus is the designated driver in our faith life to show us the way to get us to our ul mate des ny.
Satan is the decoy leading us down a dead end road where there will “wailing and grinding of teeth” in the words of the Gospel. Another way of looking at it; it is the road of great regret in life. While I am gone during September, I am coun ng on the old saying: “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

CALLING ALL KNITTERS AND CROCHET WORKERS!
When members of our parish visited our sister parish, St. Francis Mission, they learned that many of the children on the reservation are in great need of winter clothing. We are asking please for knitted or crochet, hats, scarfs or gloves for them. Please bring all com-pleted articles to the parish office, to the attention of Mary Dickins. Their winters are brutal and the Lakota children need help to stay warm. If you are not a knitter - store bought goods are welcome also.

Is Cremation allowed in the Catholic Church? Cremation is allowed in the Catholic Church. The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rites, since the presence of the human body better ex-presses the values which the Church affirms in those rites. After the funeral, the body is cremated and then the Rite of Committal takes place (Burial). When a cremation takes place before the Funeral Mass, the diocesan bishop permits the presence of cremated remains at the Funeral Mass or the Fu-neral Liturgy outside Mass. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AT SACRED HEART 2019-20
September 21-22, 2019 Catholic Campaign for Human Development National campaign instituted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The Catholic Campaign for Human Development serves to combat domestic poverty and to implement the Church's social teachings.
October 26-27, 2019 World Mission Sunday Mission Sunday is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world, benefiting the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
December 7-8, 2019 Catholic Community Services (CCS) Appeal for the Poor The annual CCS Week Campaign for Children and Families involves a special CCS speaker talking during Mass with special envelopes provided in the pews. This follows a special CCS mailing to all registered households.
Lent 2020 Operation Rice Bowl This Lenten program has an almsgiving component to it, along with resources for prayer, fasting and learning. 75% of donations fund developing world agriculture, educational and self-sufficiency projects. 25% is distribut-ed as grants in Western Washington for local hunger projects and antipoverty programs. Our parish St. Vincent de Paul recently received a Rice Bowl grant.
March 22-23, 2020 Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Mandated by the USCCB, providing for Catholic Relief Services, USCCB Dept. of Social Development and World Peace, relief work of the Holy Father, and USCCB's Migration and Refugee Services. Taken up on the 4th Sunday of Lent.
June 27-28, 2020 Peter’s Pence Peter's Pence collection allows local Catholics to join the works of the Holy Father in helping to relieve the suf-fering of the world's most vulnerable; victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters.

1st Grade Catechesis will be held in the Parish Hall on Sundays from 9:45-10:45am
2nd Grade Sacramental Prepara on for 1st Reconcilia on and 1st Holy Communion will be held in the 2nd Grade classroom of Sacred Heart School on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00pm. Plan to a end one of the parent mee ngs being offered in September: 17 or 19 at 8:30am or 6:30pm in the Moore Theatre.
Combined 3rd-5th Grade Catechesis will be held in the 5th Grade classroom also on Wednesdays from 4:00pm-5:00pm.
PreK, K, 1st and 2nd Graders are ALL welcome to join Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) at the 11:00am Sunday masses beginning again in October. (Parent Volunteers Welcome and Needed)

WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
Jubilee Reach asked - Fr John and Mary Dickens asked – and we responded! Together with 3,000 other volunteers from 75 churches, companies, organizations and teams, 15 of our parishioners helped either prepare one of 22 schools with over 430 classrooms for the new schools year – or - helped renew and restore one of 59 homes with house paint and yard clean up. We literally acted on concern and care for our community by stepping into the gap to serve school teachers and local residents who had asked for our help. Your choice for serving was soooo sincerely appreciated by the receivers of the help given from your heart.
Saturday’s Day of service was followed by a Sunday community church service in downtown Bellevue Park as over 3,000 came together for a thank you worship/celebration with an awesome Christian band, fabulous sermon, and a talk of gratefulness from receivers of this Godly heart help.
Jubilee Reach is grateful to volunteers for the part we played in fulfilling the mission they have been given by our maker.
