FESTIVAL PROGRAM

A FAMILY WEEKEND OF MUSIC, JURIED ART, WELLNESS, SUSTAINABLE LIVING & HARVEST FOOD

WELCOME HOME Here we are, after 14 extraordinary years, celebrating the last Shelter Valley Folk Festival, and once again our hearts will be full of joy and of course tears – some happy, some sad. Over the years, strangers have become family, and the community has been enriched by art, music, food, and the special magic that comes when people work together for a common cause. I want to thank the Staff and the Board of Directors, whose extraordinary strength and dedication have guided us through a difficult but smart decision, and the Membership and Volunteers who have worked so hard over the years to build this beautiful experience for this community. The many donors, sponsors, and funders who've supported the festival from its inception have been invaluable – from corn, apples and lumber to tents and of course cash, their generosity has been essential to the festival. As we move forward, Shelter Valley continues our fabulous year-round programming, and can find the breathing space to re-imagine what we are as an organization and how to best serve this community that we love so much. Thank you so much for being a part of this, for contributing in your own way to the magic of the festival, and for your support in the future. Let's celebrate together all that we've accomplished in the high hills of Grafton. Have a wonderful weekend!

Candace Shaw SVFF Chair

Welcome friends, There are so many conflicting emotions in my heart as I write this. I am overjoyed that we’ve pulled it off again! We’re here to celebrate community, hear amazing music, spend time with the people we’ve grown to love like family, and experience beautiful things. How do we say goodbye to all that after 14 years? We don’t. Shelter Valley is continuing as a year-round arts organization. Community concerts, the Artists in the Schools program, and the Village Sessions will all continue and create space for us within Northumberland. This will give the community the time and space we need while we sort out our next steps. I look forward to walking those steps with you. Thank you yet again for having faith in the process of community, for loving and supporting all that we’ve put our hearts into this year. Now let’s go party!

Lesley Marie Boileau Artistic Director

PERFORMERS

AMELIA CURRAN Juno-Award winning songwriter, activist and mental health advocate from St. John’s, Newfoundland. Amelia’s songs reach deep and capture that something that always seems to be just beyond our own understanding.

MEAGHAN BLANCHARD Meaghan is a gifted guitarist with her own blend of light claw hammer/finger picking

style; paired with a crystal pure voice and a unique ability to write and tell stories through

charming character driven songs.

FLAVIA NASCIMENTO Brazilian born Flavia exudes energy and enthusiasm. She’ll have you on your feet dancing like you were born to do it.

SIGINIUP QILAUTA SUNSDRUM

Inuit cultural performances that including throat singing, drum dancing, and singing

traditional songs. Lynda and Heidi are engaging, inclusive and so much fun.

JON BROOKS

Jon says he “writes songs to calm those who’ve looked into, and seen, what is in their hearts. I also write songs to terrify those who have not.” Jon writes thoughtful and thought-filled lyrics.

PERFORMERS

COREY GULKIN

Harp, banjo, and auto harp accompany Corey’s dark folk writing. She believes that opposites are closer to one another than we think, and we think you will fall in love.

WILLIAM PRINCE

William has a voice that will captivate you and reach into the depths of your being. It’s no

wonder he was awarded the Juno for Contemporary Roots Album of the year 2016.

BIG LITTLE LIONS

The catchiest pop-folk that ever pop folked! This BC/Ohio duo is fun, infectious and bright. You’ll be left singing their songs well after they’ve left the stage.

CECILE DOO-KINGUE

Considered one of Canada’s most electrifying and versatile guitarists, Cecile’s music

explores blues, roots and life in their myriad of aspects. Her powerful voice and raw sound

make for a fantastic show.

MURDER MURDER A big old bluegrass dance party. These young folk hailing from Northern Ontario have their own twist on the dark murder ballads. Get ready for some fun!

PERFORMERS

SAMANTHA MARTIN AND DELTA SUGAR Samantha is a force to be reckoned with! Her vocals will bring you on a rollercoaster of emotions. We’re glad to have her back at Shelter Valley, this time with Delta Sugar “co-vocalists” Sherie Marshall and Stacie Tabb, bringing a gospel-tinged, neuron-tingling magic.

DANA SIPOS

Dana has a voice and style that is haunting. Her story song style draws the listener in and

transports them to another space.

JAY AYMAR

No doubt about it, Jay is one of the best songwriters in Canada. His songs cover themes central to everyday life, love, spirituality and the human condition.

THE YOUNG NOVELISTS

Named one of the top 5 folk bands in Toronto to watch, this fun duo

brings some quirk, rock, Americana and even hand tools to our lineup!

ANDREW QUEEN AND THE CAMPFIRE CREW

Way too much fun in one family, they couldn’t keep it all for themselves so they’re here to share it with us. You’ll find Andrew and the Crew in the Children’s Village and at the family campfire.

2017 LOCAL SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE FINALISTS

MELODI RYAN

can’t remember a time ever

NOT writing songs. She still

remembers songs she wrote

as a young child, and thinks it

has always been a way of

connecting with herself, and

with those who she plays for.

STEPHEN MEDD was influenced by 60's North

American and British folk

music. The inspiration for

Stephen’s songs lies in the

wild and beautiful Canadian

wilderness that he traveled as

an exploration geologist.

HILL AND LANDING Young duo Amy Brady and

Liam Roesch have found that

their different musical

backgrounds yet similar

interests have made them a

great songwriting team, and

they love performing their

originals.

FESTIVAL STAGE HOSTS

EMCEE DAVID NEWLAND

David Newland is a writer, musician and host with a passion for the Canadian experience.

David is a long-time member of our community and has spent time on our stages

as host, Emcee, and musician.

SIDESTAGE HOSTS

ALLISON BROWN Allison’s endless repertoire of roots music matched with crafted originals create an unmistakable spark as she brings her truest personality to the stage in a refreshing conversation with the audience.

JULIAN TAYLOR

Julian lets the soulful beats resound from wider horizons. Bringing rhythm and blues,

hard rock, thoughtful folky songs, and even a little hip-hop together.

SIDESTAGE WORKSHOPS IT’S ALWAYS MONDAY The Blues are a rich and varied musical tapestry treat, woven into our lives.

CONVERSATIONS WITH DEATH Murder ballads and the great beyond. Music to look at the other side.

PLAY YOUR FRIENDS (AND) THE GUILTY PLEASURES Festival to festival, campfire to campfire, bar to bar, we’ve heard amazing things. These are the best our besties have written. Plus, folked-up versions of not-so-folky tunes!

ROCK THE BOAT The current political climate can’t be ignored. Over the years, voices have been raised and lines marked in the sand. A new generation of voices and courage are called for.

TELL ME A STORY The heart of folk music, “music of the folk”. Stories belonging to each of us record where we’ve been and the magic we’ve cast.

FURTHER ON DOWN THE ROAD Stories of travel, and changes, and life lessons, and moving beyond, and being lost, and being found, and, and, and…

HIGH DRIVE You crazy beasts and beats, try to keep up.

TAKE ME TO THE CHORUS The catchy ones stay with you. Be ready to lend your voices.

REGRETS, WISHES, AND PRIDE I regret I wrote it, I wish I wrote it, I can’t believe I wrote that song.

LOW AND SLOW Easy like a Sunday morning.

WIKIPEDIA KILLED THE BALLADEER In the internet age, songs no longer need to do the traditional work of reportage. This may not all be bad news: perhaps information 'a click away' has freed the song to do more emotional, essential work

ONLY THE LONELY Heartbreak, heart contentment, heart longing, and TV dinners.

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND THE ARTS Led by Amelia Curran. Artists experience the world differently from others, with a different lens through which to see the truths and lies. What can we as a community do to change the way we support those struggling? How do we move beyond the “at least you’ll create something amazing because of it” that seems to follow the “wounded” artist? How are we creating wounds? How do we help healing? How do we avoid hurting? (Taking place in the village workshop tent.)
