Thai Enquirer Summary

Political News

The conflict between Prawit and Prayut seems to be mending as Prawit came out to say

that he is not ‘sulking’ about the sudden move by Prayut.

Prayut walked out with Prawit with his hands over his shoulders at the

Government House. This was their 1st meeting since the sudden sacking of

Prawit’s key men – drug dealing convict – Thammanat Prompao, and deputy

Labour Minister – Narumon Pinyosinwat.

When asked if Prayut was going to take over PPRP, he said ‘don’t ask questions

that has not happened yet.’

While all this continues the rumbling for the Cabinet reshuffle continues and various

polls are coming out on who will get what position.

The Cabinet reshuffle is unlikely to happen at least until the end of the month or

early October when one of the key people who is to take on the Deputy Interior

Minister - Chatchai Promlert, who currently is permanent secretary at the Ministry

of Interior, retires on September 30th

The current deputy interior minister - Songsak Thongsri, is set to be moved to be

the deputy public health minister, while incumbent deputy public health minister

- Satit Pitutecha is set to be moved to deputy agriculture minister and Cooperative

(a position that was of Thammanat before he was fired).

There were rumours flying around yesterday that drug dealing convict – Thammant, who

is also the Secretary General of the Phalang Pracharat party (PPRP), has quit the position

but Wirat Ratanaset, deputy leader of the PPRP and the government whip, came out to

deny those rumours.

Wirat said that during the planned meeting of PPRP members tomorrow

(September 15), Gen. Prawit, the leader of the PPRP will preside over the meeting

and that Gen Prawit was still the party leader, while Capt. Thammanat was still

the party secretary general.

He said that nobody has quit and that the party structure has not yet been

restructured. It all depends on Gen. Prawit.

Main opposition Phue Thai party came out to kick out 2 of its 7 so called ‘Cobra’ MPs.

Among the 7, 5 MPs are on probation to be seen if they are going to follow party lines or

not or else, they will not be given the ticket to contest under the Pheu Thai party’s

candidacy.

While the 2 MPs that were sacked were

Sarunwut Sarunket, the 63-year-old politician who has been attacking the military

government for the past few years but changed his tone to vote against the party’s

line during last week’s no-confidence debate. He was kicked out because he was

bad mouthing the party and even during the no-confidence debate he shouted in

the parliament about how bad Pheu Thai party was when he was not given more

time than allocated to him for the debate.

Pornpimon Tummasarn, the 57-year-old former singer turned politician. She was

elected MP since 2007 under the People’s Power Party before it was dissolved

and renamed as Pheu Thai party. She has been voting against the party’s line for a

few times in the past few months.

She reportedly wants to join Bhumjai Party.

Three MPs who were on probation are

Thira Traisornkul

Jaturong Pengnoraphat, a Sisaket MP

Chaiyan Phonsuwan, a Pathum Thani MP

While the MP who was warned was Chuwit Phithakphonpanlop, a Ubon

Ratchathani MPs

One MP’s - Wuttichai Kittithanesuan, Member of Parliament for Nakhon Nayok,

missing during the voting was not considered yet for misconduct as he was

hospitalized because he was infected with covid.

Today (14 September 64) at 09:00 the Attorney General's office will bring the case

against Wirat Ratanaset, a party-list MP Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) and 88 accused

people in the case of corruption in the construction of a school futsal court in Nakhon

Ratchasima province, including 7 cases, filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court's

Criminal Division for Persons Holding Political Positions.

If the court accepts the lawsuit accused who hold political or government officials

must stop performing duties until a judgment is made, unless the court orders

otherwise.

In this case, the NACC sent an investigation report and pointed out the guilt of

Wirat during his time as a Pheu Thai MP.

Allegations are that they together were involved in corruption from the budget

allocation of 2012 to build a futsal court for schools in 18 provinces worth 4.46

billion baht, including schools in the educational area, District 2, Nakhon

Ratchasima Province, but they did not build it to the standard that can be of any

use.

Wirat revealed that he personally, wants the request to postpone the report

without disclosing the reason for this postponement request.

Meanwhile the protests of the ‘Thalu Gas’ at the Din Daeng Intersection continues

unabated each day.

This follows the September 12th

incident when a pickup truck from the Royal

Thai Police crashed into protestors and has become an issue that prompted the

setting up of a committee to investigate the issue.

Most recently, Twitter group Thalu Gas posted a temporary cessation of the

movement until a strategic conclusion is reached. And will come back again on

September 18, and on September 30, to meet at the royal equestrian area to

commemorate the brave hero against dictatorship.

The former key leader of the People’ Democratic Reform Council (PDRC) – Chitpas

Kridakorn, has been appointed the chair of the committee to look into the brutal crashing

of a police vehicle against the motorcycle protestor who was slammed and has been

admitted to hospital.

The story of the police vehicle that hit and run a protestor at Din Daeng

intersection - https://www.thaienquirer.com/32582/police-van-hits-protestor/

Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha had the representatives to sent a gift to Anutin Charnvirakul,

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health on the occasion of his 55th

birthday

of September 13.

The gift was a moss garden in a bottle.

The garden had 3 white horses, 3 cows and 3 sheep. The horses symbolize

the year of birth of Anutin. According to belief, the horse is a symbol of

courage, diligence, speed, stubbornness, rebellious, but hidden with

strength.

But many interpreted the gift as being an indication that Anutin can be all

of the character above, but he is supposed to do everything in the limited

space that General Prayut has granted him in this government.

Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said that on

September 17th

, TAT will propose to the Centre for Economic Situation Administration

(CESA) to consider opening the country to foreign tourists without quarantine.

According to the 2nd

phase of the plan, which will begin on October 1, totalling 5

provinces, namely

Bangkok

Chonburi

Chiang Mai

Phetchaburi

Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin)

All these places will have the same standards of practice or “One SOP One

System” (OSOS) to allow tourism without being quarantined in the form of ‘Sealed

Area’, building on the success of the ‘Phuket Sandbox’ project.

As for statistics as of September 12, 2021, there were 31,635 tourists from abroad who

travelled to the Phuket Sandbox Project for the first 74 days from July 1 to September 12.

Among these 31,635 people only about 89 people who were infected

with the virus.

briefing on the development of Phuket Sandbox project, the plan to welcome tourists and

the policy of opening the country to the Thai ambassadors and consuls-generals in the

targeted countries, including 60 countries, via a teleconference system

All this has been helped by the fact that the government has accelerated control of

the epidemic of COVID-19 and speed up vaccination with targets of 50 million

people to get 1st dose vaccination against COVID-19 before opening the country

and emphasizes the success of the Phuket Sandbox project.

Kulaya Tantitemit, director of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the Ministry of Finance is

phase

and as many as 26.9 million people are registered users and the money could be added as

early as October 1.

The budget to be used could be more than 40.35 billion baht which could help

stimulate the economy in the 4th

quarter from October-December.

The expectation is that the multiplier effect is likely to be at least 2x to more than

80.70 billion baht once the funds are in the hands of the people.

Govt. admits that it has no power to ask BTS to bring back the monthly travel pass that is

set to end by the September 2021

BTS says passengers are not using it these days and that this promotion has been

used for the past 15-years and with a lot more WFH this promotion is not in trend.

Says that new promotion to be in line with what the new trend is, is set to be

launched later this month.

debt has risen sharply from 80% of GDP at the end of 2019 to 90.5% in the first quarter

of 2021, during which time the Covid-19 epidemic is severe and is spreading throughout

the year. It is expected that debt by year end 2021 households will grow to 93% of GDP.

Recently, Thailand ranked 17th in household debt in the world, even lower than

neighboring countries such as South Korea and Malaysia but higher than

Singapore's household debt which is ranked 26th

in the world, in addition to the

household debt of Thailand and neighboring countries will increase rapidly.

It also has the highest debt load in the world. Therefore, sustainable household

debt management is essential.
