Jesus in the gospel spells out what our task, our outlook should

be. We are not here to focus upon our present community. Yes,

the church certainly exists to instruct, nourish, and reconcile its

members. But this is only the foundation of church—the setting

up of the structure. The church really exists to go out in search

of what is lost and to bring that lost thing of wondrous value

into the community rejoicing in the homecoming. A Christian

can never write off those who are suffering, poor, drug addicted,

criminal, or persecuted. These are God’s special loved ones

whom we are sent to bring into our family to share God’s hospi-

tality and mercy. We might define evangelization in terms of

those who are lost and found. However if we attend closely, we

are all of us in some way still lost and still constantly being

found. We have truly not yet begun to understand and appreci-

ate God’s love and mercy. Yes, some people are worse off than

us. But they cannot be said to be damned while we are saved.

As Paul points out next week, God desires the salvation of the

entire human race. Sin may separate us from God, but sin has

been reconciled in Jesus Christ. Now all that intervenes be-

tween us and God’s mercy is ignorance, says Paul. We are not in

a game of who is in and who is left out, but on a mission to en-

fold the entire human race into God’s mercy. The greater the

sin, the lost-ness, the lameness, the blindness, the deadness, the

greater the forgiveness, the found-ness, the healing, the raising

to life. Rejoicing is the only appropriate response.

Today’s gospel concludes with the story of the prodigal son, and

here again we see the blurring of boundaries. The prodigal son

sees himself as a sinner. The elder brother see himself as right-

eous. But the father only sees two sons, one of whom was lost.

All the father can do is throw the feast and rejoice. If the elder

brother cannot overcome his sense of righteousness, he will go

hungry and will miss a great celebration.

Jesús en el evangelio explica cuál es nuestra tarea, nuestra perspec-tiva debe ser. No estamos aquí para enfocarnos en nuestra comuni-dad actual. Sí, la iglesia ciertamente existe para instruir, nutrir y rec-onciliar a sus miembros. Pero este es solo el fundamento de la igle-sia: el establecimiento de la estructura. La iglesia realmente existe para salir en busca de lo que se perdió y para traer esa cosa perdida de maravilloso valor a la comunidad que se regocija en el regreso a casa. Un cristiano nunca puede descartar a aquellos que sufren, son pobres, drogadictos, criminales o perseguidos. Estos son los seres queridos especiales de Dios a quienes se nos envía a traer a nuestra familia para compartir la hospitalidad y la misericordia de Dios. Po-dríamos definir evangelización en términos de aquellos que están perdidos y encontrados. Sin embargo, si asistimos de cerca, todos estamos, de alguna manera, perdidos y constantemente encontra-dos. Realmente todavía no hemos comenzado a comprender y apreciar el amor y la misericordia de Dios. Sí, algunas personas están peor que nosotros. Pero no se puede decir que sean condenados mientras somos salvos. Como Pablo señala la próxima semana, Dios desea la salvación de toda la raza humana. El pecado puede sepa-rarnos de Dios, pero el pecado se ha reconciliado en Jesucristo. Ahora todo lo que interviene entre nosotros y la misericordia de Dios es la ignorancia, dice Paul. No estamos en un juego de quién está adentro y quién queda afuera, sino en una misión para envolver a toda la raza humana en la misericordia de Dios. Cuanto mayor es el pecado, la pérdida, la cojera, la ceguera, la muerte, mayor es el perdón, la fundación, la curación, la resurrección. El regocijo es la única respuesta apropiada.

El evangelio de hoy concluye con la historia del hijo pródigo, y aquí nuevamente vemos la confusión de los límites. El hijo pródigo se ve a sí mismo como un pecador. El hermano mayor se ve a sí mismo como justo. Pero el padre solo ve a dos hijos, uno de los cuales se perdió. Todo lo que el padre puede hacer es lanzar la fiesta y alegrarse. Si el hermano mayor no puede superar su sentido de justicia, pasará ham-
