Audi to Open More Outlets in IndiaMUMBAI (ET): It seems the

fi ght between German auto majors for leadership position in the luxury car space in India is heating up, with Audi upping the ante in an attempt to unseat the top two fi rms, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, by 2015.

“Having recorded 95 per cent growth during the January-August

period here, India is well ahead of other growth markets for us globally and we are confi dent that we are on track with our vision of being the No. 1 luxury car maker in India by 2015,” Audi India Head Michael Perschke said in a statement.

In August, Audi reported a 100-plus per cent jump in sales to 510 units, as against 250 units in the month-ago period. During the January-August period, its sales jumped a full 95 per cent to 3,655 units from 1,876 units in the corresponding year-ago period.

On the back of these robust sales numbers, Audi, which is placed at No 3 in the luxury car market in terms of sales numbers, has set a target for sales of 5,000 units this year.

To attain this coveted position,

the Volkswagen Group company is ramping up its dealership network and hiring more personnel.

“We will be hiring at least 600 more people and raising our dealerships to 25 by the end of 2012. We will also enhance our portfolio with the launch of the Q3 (model) next year,” Perschke said.

At present, BMW is the No 1 luxury car-maker in the country, a position it snatched from Mercedes-Benz for the fi rst time in 2009.

While Mercedes sold 4,890 units in January-August this fiscal, a growth of 40 per cent from 3,495 units in the year-ago period, BMW had sold 5,364 units till July.

Even as these foreign car-markers report high sales numbers, domestic auto majors have been witnessing a sharp decline in sales since last July, when overall sales slumped by 16.7 per cent year-on-year.August was no better, with domestic auto-makers’ sales falling by over 10 per cent.

Recently Mercedes had said that it wants to claw back its leadership position here by 2015 and towards this it would be launching 10 new models over the next three years.

“Our entire product portfolio, relevant to this market, will come here in the next three years...I think, we will have 9 to 10 new brands by then,” Mercedes-Benz India Sales & Marketing Director Debashis Mitra had said recently.

Some of these new products will also include its proposed small cars, Mitra had added.

Merc India had fi rst lost its leadership position to BMW in 2009 when it could sell only 3,247 units as against BMW’s 3,619 units. In 2010 too, Merc sold 5,819 cars compared to 6,246 units of BMW.

On the marke t leadership position, B M W s a i d i t i s c o n f i d e n t o f maintaining its No 1 slot, which it has done for the last two years, in future too.

“ O u r c a r s a r e positioned to attract all generations of people, who aspire to have a BMW. We have no problem in selling cars

to uncles, fathers, mothers and pops. Maybe that is the reason for our success,” BMW India President Andreas Schaaf had told PTI earlier.

While other players are currently reviewing their targets downward in the light of the negative sales numbers beginning July, Audi is confi dent to exceed its set target of 5,000 units this year.

“We are confi dent that we will exceed our set target of 5,000 units this year,” Perschke said.

Audi continues to be the market leader in the luxury SUV segment with its Q5 and Q7 and in the super sports car segment with its R8, he said.

Audi India sells various models including Audi A4, Audi A6, Audi A7 Sportback and Audi A8L.

SAIL in JV with PoscoNEW DELHI (TOI): State-

run Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is on the verge of signing the joint venture agreement with top Korean steel maker Posco for a three million tonnes steel plant near Bokaro in eastern Jharkhand state. SAIL and Posco had signed a memorandum of understanding for

setting up the plant a year ago.“We are on the last level of

discussion and this should be finalized soon,” SAIL chairman Chandra Sekhar Verma told TOI.

The plant is expected to use FINEX technology developed by Posco. It is an environmentfriendly iron-making process that allows the direct use of iron ore fi nes and non-coking coal as feedstock, according to the company’s website.

It says the technology helps lower the operating costs and emissions compared to the blast furnace process. FINEX reduces overall construction costs by eliminating the need for sinter and coke plants. A plant using the technology occupies only 60% of the area of a blast furnace plant of equal capacity.

Verma said the holding structure in the new joint venture is still being discussed but SAIL is fl exible on the issue as it is keen to bring the technology to India. “They want

to hold majority of shares as the technology is their’s .

We are discussing with them and let us see how we structure the shareholding pattern. We are not very rigid. It is a closely guarded technology. We want to bring that technology to India. Likemindedness is there and we

should be able to resolve all the pending issues,” Verma said. Verma said SAIL has undertaken various initiatives to overcome the shortage of coking coal and would meet its requirements through a mix of coal from its captive mines as well as acquisition of coking coal mines overseas.

“ We h a v e f o r m e d t h e International Coal Ventures Ltd. This company has been formed by fi ve government companies SAIL, Coal India, RINL, NTPC, NMDC. The purpose of forming this company is to acquire coking coal assets outside.” Verma said MOU has been signed with the Indonesian government and SAIL was working on selecting a particular coking mine in the country. In return SAIL has offered to set up a three million tonnes steel plant in Indonesia. “The coking coal produced will be used for making steel in Indonesia and surplus coking coal will be brought into India.”

SAIL is set to fi nalize the joint venture with Posco, Korean steel maker that uses environmentally friendly iron making processes.

India Probes Child HIV Cases After Blood TransfusionsG U J A R AT ( B B C ) : A n

investigation has been launched into how 23 children who received regular blood transfusions have tested positive for HIV in Gujarat.

The children suffer from thalassaemia and get their blood transfusions at a public hospital in Junagadh district.

Hospital authorities have denied that the children were infected by their blood supplies.

But state authorities have launched a probe after routine tests of nearly 100 children revealed the latest cases.

About 2.5m people in India have the HIV virus, according to UN-backed government figures.

Gujarat, along with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, account for 22% of HIV infections in India.

The 23 infected children in the latest case are aged between fi ve and 10 years.

They showed positive for HIV following recent tests of nearly 100 children suffering from thalassaemia and who receive blood transfusions at the hospital twice a week.

Gujarat Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas said that the children may have been infected after receiving transfusions “at some other plans.

(ET): Global hospitality major Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide plans to add more hotels under its brand Aloft in India, a company official said Sunday.

“We will be opening one Aloft hotel in Chandigarh by the end of this year and another in Ahmedabad next year. Currently we have Aloft brand hotels in Bangalore, Chennai and Coimbatore,” Rajan Bahadur, regional director (sales and marketing), South Asia told reporters after opening the hotel in this Tamil Nadu city.

The Aloft brand made its debut in India last year in Chennai and the second one was in Bangalore.

“This is one the fastest growing hotel brands in the world. In four years time we have 52 hotels in the world. The brand is all about the tech-savvy early adopter and we are excited to connect with India’s Gen Y travelers and provide them with a hotel experience that matches their very forward thinking sensibilities,” said Brian McGuinness, senior vice president, specialty select brands - Aloft, Element, Four Points by Sheraton.

The Aloft hotel here has 167 rooms with nine-foot ceilings and oversized windows to create a

bright and airy environment. For the tech savvy, the rooms offer plug and play environment for all kinds of electronic gadgets with free internet.

“Each Aloft hotel would involve an outlay of around Rs.100 crore. The Aloft hotels at an average will have around 150-160 rooms. The investment in each room excluding the real estate cost will be around Rs.4 million. The breakeven is expected to be on the third year,” Udday Kumar Krishnan, managing

director, Auromatrix Holdings Pvt Ltd said on the sidelines of the media meet.

Auromatrix is the holding company for the company/special purpose vehicle (SPV) that owns the hotel.

“We are looking at opening Aloft hotels in Hyderabad, National Capital Region and Goa,” Krishnan said.

He said the brand agreement with Starwood Hotels is for 15 years.

But the parents of the infected children insist that they only ever got transfusions at the Junagadh government hospital.

“We have never gone anywhere else [for blood transfusions]. How can they (authorities) say that children were affected with the virus before getting registered?,” Salim Sheikh, the father of one child, told The Indian Express newspaper.

Indian authorities say the number of annual new HIV infections has declined by more than 50% during the last decade.

India Develops Low Water Consuming 41 Varieties of Rice and Wheat Crops

NEW DELHI (ET): With depleting water resources in the country, the government has developed 41 varieties of rice and 22 varieties of wheat that require less water for irrigation.

In case of pearl millet, 12 varieties have been developed between 1991-2011 for dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana says Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat.

“During 2001-10, 39 rice varieties have been developed, which requires less water,” In case of wheat, 22 varieties have been

developed that require either zero or 1-2 times irrigation.

The government has also developed 12 varieties of pearl millet for dry regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana, where annual rainfall has been less than 400 mm during the last 20 years, he added.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (IACR) with the help of its 168 All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRPs), based at various State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) are involved in developing crops for different agro-climatic conditions in the country.

Fest ive sent iment translating into sales is something that is normally expected but in the past few months the buyer is resistant to purchasing at these price levels.

Consumer activist Arun Saxena says buying a home has become a matter of choice and at high prices which are causing home seekers are opting to ‘wait and watch’. “It is not about affordability that differs from person to person,” views Saxena and adds, “However , in a scenario where sales have slowed down, it is time to look beyond festive sentiment as the driver of real estate sales” he says.

For Paras Gundecha, president, MCHI, the string of festivals should create cheer in the real estate market across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. “There will be a ‘feel-good ‘ mood. We see new home seekers coming into the fray to test the waters, before sealing the deal on their new home purchase,” Gundecha says. With a residential project to market in Thane’s Ghodbunder Road, estate consultant Sachin Pahuja is already working out options that include subvention of home loans for buyers at the project. “Property purchases should rise now, amidst improved sentiments that come in the festive season,” he hopes. What about the subvention? “Given the market dynamics now, there will be a greater emphasis on friendlier fi nancial structuring in this season,” he predicts.

with the sector, slowdown in sales, liquidity pressures, sharp increase in interest rates and of course, spiralling home prices have dampened the sentiment of home buyers, which does not augur well for the festive season. In this scenario, even genuine buyers are on the wait and watch mode. Festival sales since last year have not really looked up,” explains Pranab Datta, vice chairman and MD, Knight Frank India.

PUNE (ET) : The Union government’s decision last week to ban onion export has not gone

well with any of the commodity’s stakeholders. There were protests in Nashik district on Friday and Saturday and APMCs have decided to keep onion trading suspended for an indefi nite period.

N a s h i k - b a s e d N a t i o n a l Horticultural Research and Development Foundat ion’s president Dr RP Gupta said, “There was no need to ban onion exports at this moment as wholesale prices have not appreciated much. The current wholesale prices are about Rs 10/kg to Rs 11/kg while they should be at least Rs 15/kg for the farmers to make at least 20% profi t. Instead of banning the exports, the policy should concentrate on controlling the retail prices.”

Maharashtra is the leading onion

producer in the country while Nashik district alone accounts for more than 50% of onion production

in the state. F a r m e r s have been h o l d i n g o n i o n i n the storage f rom the p a s t 4 - 5 m o n t h s w i t h t h e hopes o f selling them at higher prices.

This year, onion export has fallen 30%. Sameer Bhujbal, member of Parliament from Nashik, has pointed out in his letters addressed to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar that wholesale prices had fallen from Rs 11/kg to Rs 5.50/kg in Nashik after the announcement of the decision to ban exports.

Exporters are worried about losing their customers. “There is a possibility of India damaging its reputation as a reliable supplier of onions to the world market,” said Danish Shah, partner of Pune-based Sanghar Exports. On the other hand, farmers say the decision may discourage them from planting onions in future.

India’s first strategic economic dialogue with China, slated to happen later this month, will try to wrest concessions to balance an increasingly one-sided trade relationship.

New Delhi will try to persuade Beijing to make it a member of the proposed East Asian Community (EAC). According to the offi cials, China wants to set up an East Asia free trade area with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean),

Japan and Korea, leaving out India, Australia and New Zealand.

The EAC is envisaged as a trading block on a par with the European Economic Community, but without its political cohesiveness. China also wants to build a North East Asian free trade area, which will have Japan, Korea, Russia and Mongolia, besides itself.

Signifi cantly, Japan is seeking to widen the EAC concept into a pan-Asian trade block comprising Asean, China, Japan, Korea, India,

Australia and New Zealand.India wants to sell this idea to

China as more desirable and doable, while assuring it that the trade deals in the region are but to re-establish India’s cultural relations with its East Asian neighbors.

The main agenda for the upcoming India-China strategic talks will be the widening trade defi cit, at $20 billion in 2010. India exports raw materials to China, while China sells telecom and power plant equipment to India.

LONDON (Samachar): World champions India dominated the ICC ODI Team of the Year announced here today, with four of them fi guring in the side, including Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was named captain.

Other Indians named in the team are opener Virender Sehwag, middle—order batsman Yuvraj Singh, who won the Man—of—the—Series award in the cricket World Cup, and pace spearhead Zaheer Khan.

Apart from being named captain of the team, Dhoni will keep wicket for the fourth year in a row.

India have the maximum number of players in the world team that does not include Sachin Tendulkar.

Sri Lanka, who f inished runners—up in the World Cup, have two players in the fi rst eleven as well as the 12th man. South Africa are being represented by two players while Australia, England and Pakistan have one player each.

Sehwag partners Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top of order while the latter’s team—mate Kumar Sangakkara comes at the

crucial number three spot.South Africa’s AB de Villiers

and Australian Shane Watson were named at number four and five while Yuvraj would bat at number six, a slot ahead of Dhoni.

Pakistan’s Umar Gul and South African Dale Steyn will share the pace duties with Zaheer while

Englishman Graeme Swann is the lone spinner in the world team.

The ICC today announced the ODI Team of the Year at a special function ahead of the LG ICC Awards ceremony here. The team was chosen by a specially appointed selection panel chaired by West Indian batting legend and former captain Clive Lloyd.

Dhoni is becoming captain and will be wicket keeper for the fourth year in a row for the ICC ODI team.

ORDOS (Samachar): Goalkeeper S. Sreejesh stole the limelight with two crucial saves as India defeated Pakistan 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out in a nerve-wrecking fi nal to clinch the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Sunday.

The high-voltage summit clash was marred by Pakistan coach’s unwarranted action of constantly abusing Indian players from the roof of the stadium. Whenever there was an infringement from the Indian side, he abused liberally. And whenever the umpires blew

against India, he hollered ‘Thank You’.

Rajpal Singh, Danish Mujtaba, Yuvraj Walmiki and Sarvanjit Singh scored for India in the penalty shootout while Muhammad Rizwan and Waseem Ahmed sounded the board for Pakistan after both the sides were locked goalless in the regular and extra time.

India started the shootout on a wrong note when Pakistan goalkeeper Imran Shah saved the shot from Gurwinder Singh Chandi. Sreejesh then came to the fore with a save off Haseem Abdul Khan. It was then Mujtaba’s turn and he neatly sent the ball past Shah to give India 1-0 lead.

Pakistan equalized when Rizwan scored but Indian captain Rajpal slotted the ball home to give his side 2-1 up. Then came the crucial save

by Sreejesh as he stopped Shafqat Rasool from scoring, advancing and taking the shot on the pads.

Yuvraj made it 3-1 and the Pakistan veteran Waseem cut the scores to 3-2 but Sarvanjit’s conversion past Shah ensured India ran out champion.

Malaysia bags bronzeA last-minute goal by Firhan

Ashari helped Malaysia beat Japan and clinch the bronze medal. Just when it seemed that the match would go into extra-time, Malaysia moved in from the right fl ank and the cross found Ashari on top of the

circle. He tapped the ball to his left and, with a powerful reverse shot, beat the Japanese goalkeeper.

South Korea avoided the wooden spoon beating host China 2-1 in the play-offs for the 5th-6th spot.

Korea scored its opening goal in the 10th minute when Jong Hyun Jang converted a penalty corner. The lead was enhanced in the 28th minute when Ju Hun Kim slammed in a goal. China managed to score a consolation goal in the 62nd minute through Yixian Liu. The jubilant Malaysians celebrated their bronze medal while the Japanese crumbled on the turf, completely shocked.

Meanwhile in New Delhi, Hockey India will felicitate the Indian team on Tuesday for winning the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy. “It’s big moment for Indian hockey.,” Hockey India Secretary-General Narinder Batra said.

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza broke into the doubles top—10 for the fi rst time in her career as she gained a place after the US Open, where she made the third round along with Russian partner Elena Vesnina.

Sania is now fourth Indian player from the current lot to feature in the doubles top—10. Veteran stars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi and ever—improving Rohan Bopanna fi gure in the top—10 in the ATP doubles ranking chart.

Sania won three doubles title in the current calendar to take the overall number to 12 trophies. She triumphed at Indian Wells and Charleston with Vesnina and at College Park with Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova.

“Woke up to fi nd out I cracked the top 10 in the world:) thanks to everyone of you for the support and

love all these years,” Sania tweeted on her twitter page.

“Needed some good news to lift up spirits after this silly knee

injury...hope to recover soon,” her next tweet read.

Bhupathi congratulated Sania for the achievement. “Welcome to the top 10 club. That’s a big effort. Now stay there for a while please... :),” Bhupathi tweeted.

However, the fi rst round exit in the singles at the last Grand Slam of the year cost Sania dear as she slipped to 81 from 64.

Sania had points to defend as she had reached the second round at the US Open last year via qualifying but the defeat against Shahar Peer meant that all she could get was just fi ve points.

Sania, is likely to miss to the rest of the season due to a knee injury, Vesnina is now placed fourth in the WTA race to year—end championship.

Only the top four pairs compete in the elite championship and due to Sania’s injury the Indo—Russian pair may end up losing a lot of points and hence miss out on qualifying.

They have 4788 points, Yaroslava Shvedova and American Vaina King are getting close as they have 4685 points.

Sania Mirza has 12 trophies overall and is in the top 10 club for doubles.

convention. It’s hard to think of them as a romantic couple -- the awkwardness is almost visible when Katrina asks a somewhat dazed Imran to promise to kiss her everyday.

Yet, somehow, the duo manage to pull it off in what turns out to be a light and breezy comedy where the traditional Bollywood love story turns untraditional and offbeat. But only partially....

Akshay Kumar had a grand premiere and party to celebrate his new movie at TIFF.

Akshay Kumar’s production venture Breakaway aka Speedy Singhs, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in a grand fashion.

A cross-cultural fi lm, it is based on ice hockey, one of the national sports of Canada. The key highlight of the event was the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who walked the red carpet along with Akshay Kumar and the cast of the fi lm.

A dhol band from Punjab was a core component of the group. They presented some traditional and dynamic numbers. There was additional fanfare with horses, elephants and majestic antique cars driving the cast members to the venue, which included Russell Peters, Camilla Belle and Vinay Virmani. The Punjabi tadka did not end there. Dance troupes from India displayed their talent at

the premiere of the fi lm. Speedy Singhs is slotted to release on September 23 in India.

Canadian PM brings cake for Akki It was also Akshay’s 44th birthday on the day, and he cut a cake which was specially fl own in from Ottawa by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s team. Says a source, “Akshay’s birthday cake was baked at the prime minister’s residence at 24 Sussex Drive. The cake, in the shape of a movie reel and popcorn bucket, was flown in the PM’s aircraft and enjoyed by a VIP celebrity guestlist.”

Actress Sonam Kapoor has gone on record to say that she wouldn’t mind turning ‘gay’ for Kareena.

She said, “I wouldn’t mind turning gay for Kareena.” When we caught up with the lass and chatted up with her, she simply laughed the statement off.

“I was on a spree of giving interviews for ‘Mausam’. The TV was switch on, and the promo of Bodyguard was being aired. Kareena Kapoor looked beautiful, and I went ‘I wouldn’t mind turning

gay for Kareena’. Of course, the media had a fi eld day with that quote,” explained Sonam.

The movie has all the el-ements of entertainment designed to glue you to your seat – shock, awe, amusement, disgust, true love and inspiration. There are a few others, however, who could not get past the slum kid’s jump into the cesspool or the blinding of a child.More than 120 people with prob-ably 200 opinions about the movie assembled at a town hall meeting held at India House last Sunday afternoon.The town hall meeting was or-ganized by the Foundation for India Studies at the University of

Houston. The Foundation could not have chosen a better topic to raise awareness among Indo-Americans in Houston about its Indian studies programs. Prior to the discussion of the film, Parul Fernandes and Krishna Vavilala explained that the Foundation is currently conducting Hindi Level I and Level II courses as well as classes on Hinduism, Jainism and the Anthropology of India. complexities of life in this bustling and turbulent city through several different eyes and viewpoints. A young and idealistic traveler from London, Jasper comes to India searching for a spiritual and mystical experience. Yet after spending some time in the home of an upper-middle class family does he realize that this is not just a land of yogis and temples. The fi lm looks closely at the relationships between Mukun, a well-to-do industrialist and his wife, Kalpana and how they adapt to the increasingly Western lifestyle of a prominent Delhi family.

And as in any wealthy family in India, the house does not run without a team of servants. “Delhi in a Day’ does a fantastic job of highlighting the difference in the lives and attitudes between these two classes. The interactions between family members and the workers show that they truly don’t think of each other as equals. When Jasper comes in and tries to break these cultural divides and befriend the house staff, the lines begin to blur. But when all of Jasper’s money goes missing from his room and the servants are blamed, the relationships and tension really begins to intensify.

‘Delhi in a Day’ is a wonderfully acted fi lm with several standout

acting performances. The characters are well-developed and the cinematography and art direction are blended in order to bring the many facets of Delhi and its people to life.

I am Kalam:

“I Am Kalam” Rajasthan known as ‘The Land of the Kings’ and is famed for luring visitors with its unique blend of culture, colors, and mysticism in the deserts of Northern India. It is here that “I am Kalam’ takes place and the central character is Kalam, an impoverished young boy forced to work at a cheap roadside restaurant to support his family. What he lacks in worldly possessions he makes up

for with his wild-eyed optimism and confi dence that he can become a man of great importance in the world.

Though not formally educated, Kalam is smart as a whip and catches the eye and heart of the

restaurant owner and its patrons, but much to the dismay and envy of the others working there. It is here that he also comes into contact with a young prince of his age. Though their interaction is forbidden, the two are fascinated by the lives of one another. The prince, lonely and trapped behind the walls of his palace risks the rage of his father to befriend the poor ‘commoner and it changes them both.

develop naturally and Kalam’s infectious smile and extroverted personality make him a delight to watch on the screen. The characters are interesting to watch although the foreigners are portrayed a little

you have any idea how much I stud-ied when I was your age? I woke up at 5 a.m. every day. And look at you. Still sleeping.

This is the story of my Saturday mornings. Every one of them. On the Saturdays my parents have to work, I hear them in my dreams. My parents live in another world altogether. They get up at 5 a.m. every morning, even if they have nothing specific to do. I don’t do that even if my facebook account gets hacked.

Welcome to India — a country where the parents are too Indian and the children too American.

Being part of generation Y, I can tell you, based on experience, it is a combination that doesn’t go well at all. It’s like having Punjabi food with south Indian food.

Allow me to tell you why.Every now and then my mom

barges into my room and says: “Sit-ting around on your bed, talking on the phone and whiling away time on your laptop. I knew we shouldn’t have given it to you. Stupid useless distractions. I had none at all when I was your age.”

Okay, Mom, first of all, a laptop or a cell phone did not even exist when you were my age. There is no way you could have had it. You learnt how to use it about the same time I did.

Secondly, I could be doing some-thing productive. Don’t just walk into my room and assume stuff. I could

be discussing the terrible conditions of the Greek economy on my phone and researching about the Middle Eastern uprisings. (I’m not. I actually am just talking to my friend on the phone and chatting with a few others on facebook.) But whatever. Don’t assume stuff.

Not only do they not like the idea of a laptop or cellphone with their child

but also do not know how to use it.It’s understandable considering the

circumstances that existed when they were kids.

The other day, I was trying to figure out some Middle Eastern countries. So I was researching on Google.

I asked my dad who was sitting beside, “Papa, was Iran earlier called Persia?”

But before my dad answered, I had already looked up the answer on the web.

When my dad was my age, he would probably not have bothered to make an effort to find the answer to such a question. Not because, it was a stupid question, but because the effort would not have been worth it. He would have to get up, go to the

bookshelf, open the bookshelf, find an atlas, open it, look through the index, find the right page number, browse through all the text and then he’d have his answer. By then, Iran would have changed its name again! All I had to do was type two words into Google.

And it isn’t just the computer which had changed things, it’s the cellphone

as well. Commonly known to be a mania among parents, it’s dearer to us than our own lives. While they take hours to send a two-word text, it takes us seconds to do the same. If they were to send the same number of texts we do in one day, that’s probably all they would do that day. Babies today are probably born with their fingers moving that way. Part of evolution,

you see!Facebook is another hilari-

ous example of the genera-tion gap. My parents joined facebook much later than I did. And they didn’t seem to like the idea that everyone could see their profile picture and all their friends could see what they wrote on people’s wall. When my mom realised this she said, “What? What if Vanita sees what I wrote about her on Renu’s wall? Won’t she feel bad?”

They have been accustomed to emailing. One of my dad’s friends, who happens to be on my facebook friends list, has a habit of writing comments in

the form of letters.I once wrote on his wall “Happy

Birthday.” The next day when he logged in I had a bunch of notifica-tions. So I clicked on them and I found that he had commented on that wall post. He had written

“Dear Payal,Thank you for your wishes.Hope you are doing well.

Love,Uncle”Anyone else would just write

‘thanks.’ At most, a thank you and a smiley.

So it isn’t only the age gap that creates such differences. It’s also the change of trend. What our parents did at our age, we wouldn’t even dream of doing. That would make us a different species altogether. I would call them Boro sapiens.

Gen Y thinks parents are impracti-cal, overly conservative, boring. On the other hand, the oldies complain all the time that the younger generation is lazy and spoilt. We have all grown up in different environments and dif-ferent mindsets. In India, the kind of change that occurred over the last 20 years makes 1 generation gap equal to 5. The generation gap does not allow us to see eye to eye on much, unless we try to think from their point of view once in a while.

Everyone is the way he or she is because of a reason. It’s his/her back-ground or upbringing that makes him/her that way. That’s why we are so different from our parents. We have grown up in such diverse environ-ments.

Next time when you talk to people who you don’t see eye to eye with, be it people from the older or younger generation or anyone else, wait for a second before you pick up an argu-ment and put yourself in their shoes. Maybe, you’ll realise that they are right in their own old ways. Hindu
