Principal Reflections

September 2018

I started to write this newsletter during our first week of school because I was so excited about the smooth start that we enjoyed at both Sunrise Elementary and the 4K Center for Learning. Even though we started with very warm classrooms, the students were eager to get going. Now that we have been here for a few more days, I am still feeling great about the things that we have happening at both schools. I would like to thank our staff members and our families for all of the preparation and cooperation shown in the past weeks.

Having said that, I would like to share with you this years school initiatives and ask for your attention to a few minor traffic needs.

First of all, it is important for you to know that our schools are heavily involved with trying to enhance each child’s abilities as problem solvers. In doing so, we are paying close attention to the behaviors that contribute to students believing in their ability to “own” their learning. In each grade level our teachers have identified key behaviors that we believe students possess, but in many cases simply need the opportunity to practice. Some common themes across grade levels include students persevering through challenges, asking questions to clarify things that they have questions about, and taking risks to try new things. These behaviors are not isolated to academic learning. It is our belief that these behaviors contribute to all aspects of our students lives. I am sharing this information with you simply to make you aware and to ask that you watch for signs of these behaviors throughout the year.

On a different note, I would like to thank our parent leaders at both schools. At the 4K Center Mrs. Laundrie (Building Coordinator) has assembled a great group of folks to lead the planning of our PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) events for the year. I look forward to meeting everyone. At

Sunrise our PTO (Parent T eacher Organization) has developed a number of fabulous community building activities for the school year as well as a budget that supports these events and other school needs. In order to fund this budget, the PTO has planned a number of different fundraising activities throughout the year. Please know that the members of the PTO board give great consideration to the number of fundraising events, but they also feel strong about their community building mission AND they are supporting the upgrading of playground equipment. If you would like more information about any of the PTO activities, please feel free to contact any of the PTO board members or check out their agendas and minutes on our website.

Finally, with regards to transportation, I appreciate the parents of both schools who have been flexible in learning the drop-off and pick-up procedures. The Sunrise drop-off area along the curb, at the front of the school, is intended to be a “drop and go” area. If you intend to park and wait for the bell to ring, please park in one of the designated stalls and walk your

STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council will be advised by new leadership this year. Mrs. Anderson (ERE) and Mrs. Roth (2nd grade) will help Sunrise 4th graders develop their leadership skills through Student Council service projects. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Roth are excited to keep some of the old Student Council traditions and to try some

new things.

This year students were asked to submit an application to the Student Council. Applications were due last week, and Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Roth will review them this upcoming week to determine which students

will best represent Sunrise this year. Our first meeting will be shortly after that. Stay tuned!

REMINDERS FROM THE OFFICE

The first bell rings at 8:28 AM —students come in from outside and proceed to their classroom. The secondbell rings at 8:35 AM —students are expected to be in their seats ready to learn. If your student is entering

the building at or after 8:35 AM, they are considered tardy for school.

In an effort to minimize classroom interruptions, and more importantly, to ensure the safety of all students, weare asking that you make a concerted effort to clearly communicate your child's end of school-day transporta-tion plans. Please be sure that your child is well aware of how he/she is to get home on a daily basis andplease be sure that your child's teacher and the school office are well aware of the plan as well. We under-stand that there are occasions in which normal plans are changed. In these cases, please make an effort tocommunicate this to all important parties before the school day begins. Thank you for your attention to this

effort.

When you call school to report an absence, please provide specific information about illness symptoms that

your child has, such as:

Influenza-like illness (fever/chills, cough/sore throat/congestion, headache/muscle aches)

Gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea )

Other illness (strep throat, pneumonia, etc.)

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

Now that school is back in session, please remember to drive safely around pedestrians, school buses and

bicyclists, and to provide children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe on their to school, while at school and

on their way home. Whether students walk, ride their bike, take the bus or drive to school, it is extremely important

that they—and motorists around them—take proper safety precautions.

Please remember to:

Slow down and watch for students in school zones and wherever children are present

Drive cautiously around school buses, including obeying the amber warning and red stopping systems

Follow the safety procedures for drop off and pick up at our school

Safety is a top priority and we appreciate your support in helping to keep the

children in our community safe.

PBIS UPDATE PBIS-Positive Behavior Intervention Support

As we begin our 2018-2019 School year our theme is

“Passport to Leadership”

And truly it’s going to be an adventure of travel.

The PBIS Kick-off week took flight with many activities. Students spent time learning and reviewing the expectations of the Stinger Way Flight Plan. The “Flight Crew” shared how the Stinger Way looks like by examples, activities and role play within the classroom, hallways, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal and recess.

On Friday, September 7th, our mascot, Buzz welcomed students and staff to our All School Assembly and received many hi-fives and hugs. Mrs. Zuberbier shared an incredible personal story on the “Power of Yet” and the staff relay was pretty competitive as they traveled across the world. Climbing Mount Fuji, Japan, Crossing the Atlantic Ocean and viewing Canterbury Plains, New Zealand. Mrs. Roth’s class showed us how to be leaders by following the Stinger Way and introduced The Stinger Student Ambassador Award.

The Stinger Student Ambassador Award is a representative from each classroom who is a good role model, tries their best, helps others and leads by example. This in turn displays our Community Values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty and Responsibility.

The Ambassador Award will be given by classroom teachers each month to a student who

demonstrates these values by going above and beyond. Students will have their pictures taken

and be displayed on the “Passport to Leadership” Bulletin Board in the main lobby. In future

newsletters, students’ names will be listed along with a hyperlink to view students’ pictures.

KASD WEBSITE & COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Papermaker Scamper is a short one-mile run that kicks off the Homecoming parade each year. Students in grades 1-8 are welcome to run this event. The run begins behind the bleachers of Papermaker Stadium and ends near Kwik Trip across from Kimberly High School. Students run by themselves with the support of a few Kimberly High School cross country runners and teach-ers. Please fill out this linked form to register your child for the 2018 Scamper.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL

Sunrise is still collecting Box Tops for Education and Milk Moola products from Kwik Trip. We are no longer col-lecting Campbell Soup Labels as they have discontinued the program. Thanks for all your help in earning money

for our school.

Just a reminder: Prescription medication to be given at school must have a written order from your physician on forms available in the office. Over-the-counter medication, like cough drops and Tylenol, will also need a form filled out, but does not require a physician’s signature. All medication must be in original container. No medication will

be given without a signed consent form. If you have any questions, please call Monica in the office at 954-1822.

BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIREMENTS

Just a reminder: effective March 1, 2009, volunteers are required to complete a background check. Volunteers in-clude fieldtrip chaperones and those that assist in the classroom. If you will be volunteering at Sunrise Elementary, we ask you to complete a background check form. Forms can be obtained in the office or online by clicking HERE. and talent.

Book Nook“The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn

This is a classic back-to-school story for students who are having a little trouble being away frommom or dad all day. A touch of separation anxiety is very common at the start of the school year but if it persists beyond the first few weeks of school it might be important to talk with your child’s teacher or a counselor about the problem.

The Kissing Hand is a very relatable story about a raccoon who misses his mom but learns that she will be with him all day long through a kiss on his hand. I hope you love this one as much as I do!

September in Life Skills

In September we will be focusing on skills for academic success! Listening and Following Directions will be the focus for most classes, while goal-setting and perseverance will also be covered in some grade levels.

Try It: If you are looking for a fun game to reinforce these topics, try playing games like Simon says, red light/green light, or even Marco Polo!

Social and Emotional Learning Small GroupsHere is what we have coming up for small groups at Sunrise…

New Student Group: Started this week and goes through October 5th

This group gives our newest Stingers a chance to meet each other and learn about our school in a supportive and fun atmosphere!

Stress Busters Group: Starts October 1st and goes through October 26th

This group offers a safe environment for students to learn about what anxiety is and practice coping strategies that can help. The group is perfect for getting through those new school year jitters!

School Skills Group: Starts October 15th and goes through November 20th

This group allows students to get some extra practice with skills like listening with attention, carefully following directions, and persevering when things are difficult. The curriculum is delivered through engaging games and activities. It is a great booster at the start of the year.

PATH CounselingNew to Sunrise this year, we are excited to be partnering with PATH Counseling. PATH is a school-based mental health program. The goal of PATH is to provide mental health therapy within the school to students who experience barriers to community-based care.

As you may or may not be aware, the school district can no longer

provide a student directory, however, we as the PTO can put one

together for the Sunrise families. If you would like your information

Also, Sunrise PTO is looking for interested parents who want to be

involved in their child’s classroom to apply for the 2018-19 Room Parent

Program. The room parent can be considered the “point of contact” for

the classroom and is responsible for assisting the teacher with various

tasks such as emailing parents with items needed for the classroom and

helping organize classroom parties. If there is more than one applicant

per classroom, selection of the room parent will be random and parents will be notified when selection

Re: Personal Safety Unit Dear Parents/ Guardians:

During the month of October all students will be discussing “Personal Safety” in their

Life Skills classes. This unit will cover many “what if” situations; including safety rules about

strangers and reporting unsafe/abusive touches. Students will learn the “No, Go, Tell”

response for these situations and will be able to identify trusted adults who may be able to

help. In this unit, 1st and 3rd grade students will have a guest presenter from the Sexual Assault

Crisis Center who will echo these same strategies and safety rules. This presentation will be

held on October 4th. Many of these listed topics are linked with the human growth and

development standards which were mailed home to you in September.

With a school/parent effort, we can help children better protect themselves and feel

safe. I have enclosed the Human Growth and Development Standards which were mailed home

in September. Please take time to discuss these items with your child. If you have any

Dear Kimberly Area School District Families,

We are committed to promoting the social and emotional well-being of our students. By working together with United Way’s PATH (Providing Access to Healing) for Students, we are now able to provide the opportunity for school-based counseling services to students in 5-year-old kindergarten through 12th grade. New for this year - services have been expanded to be available to students younger than seventh grade. We believe this will fill an important need for some students and families.

The United Way’s PATH for Students is a partnership between United Way Fox Cities, Catalpa Health, Family Services of Northeast WI, Inc., Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, and the Kimberly Area School District. The purpose of this collaborative partnership is to offer mental health outreach and treatment services to the students in our schools.

Counseling is an excellent way to learn new skills, develop self-confidence, become more aware of others’ views and experiences, practice new behaviors, and better understand how to deal with the problems life presents.

It is our belief that the combined commitment and expertise of our respective agencies, the knowledge and services provided to youth throughout Northeast Wisconsin, the credentialing of our programs, and the strong history of quality outcomes will allow for improved access to quality mental health services for students and families in our District.

If you are a parent and think your child may benefit, or if you are a student and feel you may benefit from counseling, you are invited to contact your school counselor for further screening.
