A new phase in Unlease the Gospel
Over the next two years, all parishes of the Archdiocese of Detroit will join other parishes in new groupings called “families of parishes.” Families of parishes are groups of parishes, generally three to six, sharing resources to advance the mission of the church. This new model will allow the priests, deacons, and lay staff associated with the “family of parishes” to better share their gifts and talents as a whole family. This will be a significant change in the way our parishes are currently structured but a necessary step in our missionary transformation that was called for in Synod 16.
The goal of “families of parishes” is to make our parishes places where individuals and families can encounter Jesus anew, grow as disciples, and be equipped to be witnesses to the Risen Christ.
The current health and economic crisis have accelerated the process of renewing the way our parishes are organized and structured. This new model takes into account the reduced material resources we have, as well as the increasing shortage of priests.
On the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2020, Archbishop Vigneron will announce to the faithful this next step on our missionary journey. As time progresses, more and more information will be available to you about what “families of parishes” will mean to you and our parish. This new effort, however, will ensure that parishioners become part of a larger faith family, working together and leveraging resources in pursuit of our mission to unleash the Gospel. The next two years will be a time to discern this process and move forward into a new day of grace as part of a “family of parishes.”

Morse Elementary School Food Drive September 26 & 27
While you are out shopping, please grab a few extra items for our St. Thomas More Food Drive. Help those in the community by donating items listed below. They will then be donated to Morse Elementary School.
Items most needed are: pasta, pasta sauce, rice, ramen noodles, noodles, soups, macaroni and cheese, beans, lentils, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, saltine crackers, fruit snacks, granola bars, soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine supplies, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby wipes and formula. Donations will be collected before and after all Masses on September 26 and 27. There will also be a box outside the church for drop offs.

SVDP FRIENDS WALK SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1:00 PM
For the past several years, our St. Vincent de Paul conference has participated in the Friends of the Poor Walk at Belle Isle to raise funds and bring awareness of our organization. This year, due to COVID-19, we cannot have our big Walk on Belle Isle. Instead, we are going local! Our Vincentians will be walking at Cranbrook Gardens on Sunday, September 27 at 1 pm. If you could support us monetarily, please go to www.friendswalk.org and look for the St. Thomas More Conference team to make your donation, or you could write a check to SVDP with the words "Friends Walk" in the memo line, and put it in the donations box at church. Stewardship TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE
Unleash the Gospel EVANGELIZATION
“Judge Not”? by John Hannigan
Some years ago Pope Francis caused a stir when he said, “Who am I to judge?” People who do not like being judged often quote Jesus, “Judge not, lest ye be judged” (Matt 7:1). But life is full of necessary judgments. “Judge not” makes no sense in the lives of responsible parents, teachers, civic and religious leaders, and even voters.
Many Bible passages teach us to judge, admonish and correct our children, brothers and sisters. Jesus also said, “If your brother sins, rebuke him” (Luke 17:3). Paul told Christians to correct and reprimand their brethren (e.g., 1Cor 2:15; Gal 6:1; 2Tim 4:2). In charity, we have a duty to judge and correct others. “Admonish the Sinner” is a Spiritual Work of Mercy. The Lord told Ezekiel that if he did not speak out “to dissuade the wicked from his way,” the Lord would hold him responsible (Ez 33:7-9).
So what did the Pope mean? What did Jesus mean? Francis refused to be “judgmental,” to marginalize, or to speak in generalities. Notice that Jesus and Paul spoke about judging people we know, brothers and sisters. Sirach (19:13-17) instructs us to admonish friends, and only if we know for sure what they did. Paul said, “filled with all knowledge … [you are] able to admonish one another” (Rom 15:14), although we can never know the full depth of a person’s heart or their circumstances.
Admonishing the behavior of those close to us must be done with great care, charity, gentleness, and in the full knowledge that we, too, are sinners. We will be judged as we judge others (Rom 2:1-8) and forgiven only as we forgive (Luke 11:4). Paul admonished “not to shame” but “as my beloved children” (1Cor 4:14). Jesus taught us to correct others in private, not in a televised interview or on Facebook: “If your brother sins [against you], go and tell him his fault between you and him alone’” (Matt 18:15).
To admonish with love is a work of mercy. We are meant to help each other find our way and correct our mistakes, together learning to walk more closely with Christ. We must be honest with ourselves. “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first” Jesus said, “then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye” (Matt 7:5). By humbly acknowledging our own sins and our need for correction, we help shape a culture that does not accept sin. Questions or comments? [email protected]
Stewardship Reflection Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Though we can never fully grasp the infinite perfection of God and His ways, a basic knowledge of Scripture reveals that God’s logic often differs from worldly logic.
Our first reading, from Isaiah, reminds us that God often thinks bigger than we do. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” As His followers we must strive as best we can to think as God does, using our time (and our talents and treasure, too) with eternity in mind.
In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus offers us a glimpse of the “Godly logic” of the Father through a parable of a landowner hiring workers for his vineyard. Some workers are called early in the day, others not until very late. Yet the landowner pays them all a full day’s wage. This angered the laborers who had worked longest. But those laborers were relying on human logic and human calculations. They were not thinking as God does.
This can happen to us Christian stewards as well. We can grumble and complain (at least internally) when we compare ourselves to others and sense that not everyone is contributing as much as we are to the parish, the neighborhood, within our family and so on. At those moments, we need to think bigger!
We must remember that it is a great privilege to have been called by the Father to work in His vineyard. Living the stewardship way of life brings us meaning, depth and purpose.
Let’s embrace this Godly thinking and thank Him for calling us to this way of life.
