The obligation to attend Sunday Mass is dispensed until November 1, 2020. Please visit our website, www.stmartha.org for a complete list of Guidelines for Masses at St. Martha Church

From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto … Last Sunday we spoke of the foundation and of the

proof of Christian love in all of us, Jesus’ disciples: the foundation of love is justice, the proof is forgiveness. When justice is missing, then true love does not exist, and if love lacks forgiveness, then love does not exist. In today’s extraordinary gospel passage, Jesus goes beyond justice to let us know that God’s ways are not our ways, and that God’s guiding principle is love and mercy!

So then, the powerful message of today’s Gospel should give us so much joy and hope to enter into paradise, notwithstanding how much guilt we feel for all our weaknesses, sins and lack of love! From a social justice perspective, if a person works one hour only, the compensation should be for one hour, and not for a full day of work. Therefore, we must agree with the foreman and not with the owner of the vineyard. But God had already foretold through Isaiah, the prophet: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways… as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” And Jesus made this prophecy real in the parable of the workers: “Are you envious because I am generous?” God will not hold us at the final judgment only according to His justice, but God will go beyond His justice with the gift of His immeasurable mercy to us. Although the teaching originated with making clear to His followers that we Gentiles will be saved, even if we entered last into the covenant with God, the teaching for us is a consideration of the infinite mercy of God, who will accept into Paradise even the worst sinners, who on their deathbed will ask Jesus for forgiveness. Not only that, the Bible also teaches us (1 Cor 7: 14) that an unbelieving spouse, or child, is made holy (and so saved) thru the believing spouse, who becomes the lightning rod of the justice of God, short-circuiting His justice, and leaving only His mercy to open the doors of paradise to them! Remember that God’s love is everlasting. We may kick God out of our lives, businesses and relationships, but God will always relentlessly beg us again and again to return to Him, even at the last hour of our earthly existence, because God is crazily in love with us!

A message from our Holy Father, Pope Francis: “The Christian response to the pandemic and to the

consequent socio-economic crisis is based on love, above all, love of God who always precedes us (cf. 1 Jn 4:19). He loves us first. He always precedes us in love and in solutions. He loves us unconditionally and when we welcome this divine love, then we can respond similarly. I love not only those, who love me - my family, my friends, my group - but also those who do not love me, I also love those who do not know me and I also love those who are strangers, and even those who make me suffer or whom I consider enemies (cf. Mt 5:44).

People still ask about cremation! Our U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops proclaimed: “The Church’s belief in the sacredness of the human body and the resurrection of the dead has traditionally found expression in the care taken to prepare the bodies of the deceased for burial. This is the body once washed in Baptism, anointed with the oil of

salvation and fed with the bread of life. This is the body whose hands clothed the poor and embraced the sorrowing. Indeed, the human body is so inextricably associated with the human person that it is hard to think of a human person apart from his or her body. Thus, the Church’s reverence and concern for the person whom the Church now commends to the care of God.”

Thus, while “cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body. The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rite, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in its rites.”

While cremated remains may be buried in a grave, entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium or even buried at sea, “the practice of scattering cremated remains at sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church prefers.” The cremated remains of the body may be properly buried at sea in the urn, coffin or other container in which they have been carried to the place of committal.

Our beloved Bishop Frank J. Dewane has asked us pastors to contact all Catholics in our Diocese to help with volunteering at the diocesan level, according to their level of expertise, as also in the Parish. He writes, “An important aspect of the operation of the Diocese are the various Diocesan Boards and Committees, such as the Diocesan Finance Council, Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida Board, the Review Board, the Planning and Development Committee, Investment Committee, School Board, Catholic Charities Board, and Diocesan Regional Committees. The knowledge and expertise of professional skilled members of the Faithful are truly valuable to the success of these committees and their contribution to the Local Church and Her mission.

As the end of the terms for many of the members of these committees and boards approach, the Diocese recognizes and appreciates the role they have served. In order to secure rotation and the required geographical representation in replacing those whose terms are reaching their conclusion, your kind assistance is requested in identifying men and women who have expertise in the following areas and who are also faithful to the Church and Her teachings: Law, Administration, Communication, Accounting, Education, Client Relations, Medical, Finance, Building/Construction, Marketing, Real Estate.”

But also here in our parish of St. Martha, we need volunteers: Money Counters, Caritas, Development and Finance councils, Legion of Mary, Altar Society, Council of Catholic Women, Hospitality Ministry, Altar Servers, Bethesda House, Lectors, Choir Singers, Jail Ministry, Respect Life, Community Pregnancy Clinic, Ushers, Solve Maternity, Witness to Love (marriage preparation), Rosary Makers. The great majority of our volunteers are retired from up north and obviously they are seniors, and they do a good service, although we miss them when they go home after winter. With the pandemic we found another problem: age. Because our volunteers are seniors, they are generally advised to stay home, and our parish ministries suffer and

the ministries remain without personnel and help. Insofar that many ministries are still closed, such problem is not essential, but we need to be prepared for the normalization of our lives soon: young or mature adult volunteers are needed! Ask the Holy Spirit to give you guidance in ministering at the service of God’s people.

The Bishop has approved the giving, by ushers of our printed bulletins as the parishioner exits Mass. Bulletins will also be available at the confessional room when receiving Holy Communion. Also, bulletins will be available at the Parish Office during the week, Monday through Friday (9 am-Noon, 12:30 pm– 4 pm).

Saturday is the Feast of Padre Pio, who is, with Mother Theresa “one of the most popular modern saints.”

Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione in 1887 in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina. A Capuchin priest who had received the stigmata, he spent fifty years at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he was much sought after as a spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor. Despite such notoriety, he would often say, “I only want to be a poor friar who prays.” His life was devoted to the Eucharist and to prayer. He died September 23, 1968 at age eighty-one. Pope John Paul II announced the inclusion of his Memorial in the General Roman Calendar in June, 2002. He is considered the patron saint of civil defense volunteers and Catholic adolescents.

Setting up an endowment is

easier than you might imagine.

An endowment is an excellent way for a parishioner to make sure that St. Martha continues to thrive well beyond their lifetime, and we can make it easy. Through the Catholic Community Foundation, a parishioner can choose to add to existing endowment funds or create their own endowment. Endowment funds help provide long-term stability and sustainability well into the future because the endowment is typically structured so the original gift amount (principal) remains intact, while the investment earnings are used to support St. Martha. Endowments don’t have to be setup for millions of dollars. For instance, a $25,000 endowment, at a current payout rate of 4%, will generate $1000 for St. Martha and will continue forever. The impact of the gift will be felt for generations to come. If you are interested in learning more about an endowment, please contact Teressa McCoy in the Parish Office at 941-366-4210 or [email protected].

Thank you for your support of St. Martha Parish.

Throughout salvation history, God has welcomed repentant sinners with special joy. Jesus concludes the parable of the lost sheep with these words, “there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance” (Lk 15:7).
