One of our most popular fiction displays is our “State of Suspense” display which
highlights mystery authors who choose to set their books locale in the Northwoods of
Wisconsin, the Upper Pennisula of Michigan or Minnesota’s Boundary Waters area.
Either our readers enjoy reading about the Northwoods or they really don’t care to
sleep at night because any of these titles will remind you to keep your doors
locked…even in the Northwoods!
If this type of suspense interests you try these authors…
John Sandford, William Kent Krueger, Steve Hamilton, Joseph Heywood, Mary Logue,
and Victoria Houston.
Our Book Discussion Group, Books-the-other-Channel will be discussing the book titled
In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O’Brien. Join them Thursday, September 25 at 6:30
p.m. in the Lower Level of the Demmer Library. (We’ll leave the doors unlocked for
you!)
Thrillers with a Taste of the Northwoods
The Laura Ingalls Wilder Storyperformed by Corrinne Lester
Join us as the Demmer Library celebrates one of America’s best-loved authors.
In 1932, when Laura Ingalls Wilder started writing her classic "Little House" book series, she had no idea the impact
the stories would have on future generations of readers of American history. She wrote simply to preserve tales of a
lost era in American history, the pioneer life she vividly recalled from her growing-up years on the frontier in the
1870's and 1880's. When completed, the eight-volume series , documented a long lasting and substantial literary
picture of pioneer life in Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

Make A Bookmark To Celebrate
National Library Card Sign-Up Month
September is known as the month for sending kids back to school, with parents hoping
their children are ready and excited to learn. One way to make sure kids are ready to
learn is with the most important school supply -- a library card. A library card is their
ticket to grand adventures, armchair travel to foreign
lands, and access to research information.
Registering for a card is easy, free, and quick! Simply ask at the desk for a registration
form, and once you’ve filled out the information for your child and signed the form,
they’ll be handed their very own library card. This month make sure your children gear
up for school by getting them a Demmer Library Card.
In celebration of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, children will be able to decorate
special bookmarks while they are visiting the Demmer during the month of September.
Everything needed for this project will be available in a kit at the desk, simply ask the
librarian to borrow the kit. Your child will be able to create a bookmark and bring it home that same day.
Preschool Story Hour Begins
Attention Preschoolers and their Parents!
The Demmer Library is hosting two Open House events to kick-off our annual
Story Hour program.
Sugar Camp Parents and their Preschoolers may join us at the Sugar Camp
School on Thursday, September 6th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Three Lakes Parents and their Preschoolers may join us Monday, September
10th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the Lower Level of the Demmer Library.
Story Hour @ the Demmer Library is all about having fun while learning. The program aims to enrich children’s language
and listening skill with stories, music & movement, finger plays, rhymes, and video!
Children ages 3 & up are invited to attend (younger children are also invited…it’s a good idea to talk to the Library Staff
before stopping in). Parents and/or caregivers may choose to attend with their child but are not required to do so.
Story Hour is held Tuesday mornings at the Demmer Library in the Lower Level Meeting Room at 9:30 a.m. beginning
September 11th. Sugar Camp Story Hour is held on Thursday mornings at the Sugar Camp School at 8:30 a.m. beginning
September 13th. Both programs last about one hour.

Library Foundation Golf Outing a Success
Under cool and cloudy skies threatening rain, 18 four-member teams set out to play nine
holes of golf for the Library Foundation's Fundraiser at Big Stone Golf Club. There was a
jovial atmosphere as teams made up of family members, business associates, and friends
stroked the best-ball format of the
tournament. Along the way, there
were some friendly competitions for
longest putt and longest drives. On hole two the youngest
competitor, A.J. Zayia, sank a twenty-foot putt for the honors.
Adam Rekau had the longest drive for the men, Karla
Lederhaus had the longest drive for the women, and Jerry
Guentner sank the longest putt on number nine.
Overall, the winning team for the women at 37 strokes was:
Linda Soder, Debbie Lawonn, Dar Martineau, and Mary Flannery. Winning for the men with a one-stroke margin
at 29 was the team of: Tim Winter, Terry Bingham, Herb Winter, and Mike Winter.
The Library Foundation's President, Jim Levandoski, thanked
the participants and many sponsors of the event and noted
that the winner of the Packer Game tickets was Kay
Javenkoski.
(Update: According to first estimates the Golf Tournament raised
approximately $6,000 for the Demmer Library!---Thanks to all!)

I fell in love with reading with
Little Women by Louisa May
Alcott — I was nine or ten years
old and Jo March jumped off the
pages as an outspoken and funny
tomboy who chafed under the
expectations of young women
during Civil War era America. She
was one of the reasons I dreamed
anything could be possible in my
life!
Access to Books is Essential
Random House, Inc., the U.S. division of Random House, the world’s
largest trade book publisher, has announced that it will donate one
million dollars to First Book, the national non-profit literacy organization
whose mission is “to give children from low-income families the
opportunity to read and own their first new books.”
Since it was established in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 50 million new books to children in more
than 3,000 communities large and small across the U.S. Before First Book, many of those children did not own a
single book in their homes. It is no surprise that the organization consistently has demonstrated that interest in
reading increases dramatically, as does their literacy, when young people grow up with access to books.
Also not surprising is that the Town Three Lakes itself has a grass-roots program sharing essentially the same
mission of providing books to children of low-income families. According to Barb Bauknecht, retired Three Lakes
Educator, locally the Alpha Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma distributes approximately 25-46 books each
month at the Three Lakes Christian Food pantry to children who may not have any other opportunity to own
their own book.
The Alpha Eta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma, offers this program at seven
different food pantries in the Northwoods. Recently at a national convention of
the Delta Kappa Gamma organization, the program received recognition of being
the only program of its kind in the State of Wisconsin. Grant funds were also
promised from the state level of the Delta Kappa Gamma allowing the program to
continue.
Locally the Three Lakes School District teacher’s organization, the Three Lakes
Women’s Club as well as individual contributors have donated funds to the local
chapter ensuring its success. Individuals interested in donating their time or
money to the effort are encouraged to call Barb Bauknecht or visit the Three
Lakes Christian Food Pantry, the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Town of Three Lakes offices.
For additional information on First Book please visit www.FirstBook.org.
This past summer www.First Book.org celebrated its 50 millionth book given
to children in need by asking what book first got you hooked on reading…the
top five are listed here…(please see our display at the library for additional
titles)

2. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
3. Little House on the Prairie by Laura
