Avonvale Rugby ClubAvonvale Rugby Club has played rugby in Bath since 1883. We are now entering our 125th year. The friendly club provides facilities for all and our club-house on Bathford Hill is available for private functions (please see our website for details.) We play our rugby on one of the most attractive grounds in the area situated in the valley by the river, and have come a long way from the old "Yatesbury" Hut in 1951 situated down on the bottom pitch with old, outdoor single metal baths behind "The Crown" pub, to the club house we have now that was built in 1971 with hot showers !!. As with all other local rugby clubs we rely on sponsorship to help with the running costs of the club, and this year is no exception as we have several big structural commitments that need attention. These commitments are specialist jobs and we do not have the knowledge within the club to do it ourselves. Thanks to the kind donation of materials from companies and with the help of players, parents and members, we have had several weekends of refurbishment and have saved money by laying the patio ourselves. If you would like to help in sponsoring a game then please contact me at the details given below. The cost of sponsoring a game is £50.00. As a thank-you for your support your name will be put behind the bar on your chosen match day and you will be invited to a sponsors' buffet lunch at the end of the season on the April 18 2009. You can enjoy the hospitality of our club house whilst watching the game and join us afterwards for discussions and refreshments. Simon Harris01179 373 475 or 07817 632 446 [email protected]

Box W. I.In July we had a very interesting talk by Mr. Derek Remington on Indian Buildings and Wildlife, following a visit there by himself and his family. On August 12 we had a very enjoyable annual garden party (indoors this year) despite the thunder and rain at Cheney Court Farm. Our next meeting will be in the Selwyn Hall on Tuesday September 9 at 2-30 pm. when the Rev. Mary Teed will be giving a talk on 'Thorns, Thistles and Roses'.All visitors and new members are welcome.Jean Cherry

Friends of Bathford School On Friday October 3 8pm-11pm in the Parish Hall F.O.B.S will be holding a PUDS & PUZZLES. Why not get together a team of six people and test your knowledge in our quiz then in the interval enjoy some delicious home-made desserts, or if you prefer cheese and biscuits. Coffee and wine will also be available. £5 per person (includes food). Tables of six can be booked from the September 8 by contacting: Susan Gadras on 858084 or Elizabeth Tait on 858326

Bathford twinning We have long been disappointed with the signs at the entrances to the village which were supplied by B&NES. Even more so since Batheaston got rather superior ones when they twinned !So I’m glad to be able to report that we have managed to obtain a much smarter new one to put at the railway bridge entrance to Bathford. Parish Hall Management MeetingNext months committee meeting is on Thursday September 25 at 8pm.Meetings are open for all regular hirers of the hall.Shirley Beazer

The summer is a time to unwind.

Here are three sets of suggestions as to how to do so. I’ll leave you to decide which is most helpful.

The first is from a Caring for Self at Work programme:

1. Be gentle with yourself.

2. We cannot change anyone else - we can only change how we relate to them.

3. Remember that in the light of all the problems we see, we are bound to feel helpless at times. Admit it without shame. Caring and being there are sometimes more important than doing.

4. Change your routine often and your tasks when you can.

5. Learn to recognise the difference between complaining that relieves and complaining that reinforces negative stress.

6. On the way home, focus on a good thing that occurred during the day.

7. Avoid ‘shop talk’ during breaks and when socialising with colleagues.

8. Schedule ‘withdraw’ periods during the week - limit interruptions.

9. If you never say ‘no’, what is your ‘yes’ worth?

10. Laugh and play.

The second is a prayer:

A prayer for the stressed

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

the courage to change the things I cannot accept,

and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill today because they got on my nerves.

And also, help me to be careful of the toes I step on today,

as they may be connected to the feet I may have to kiss tomorrow.

Help me always to give one hundred percent at work (or play):

12% on Monday

23% on Tuesday

40% on Wednesday

20% on Thursday

and 5% on Friday.

And help me to remember that when I’m having a bad day and it seems that others are trying to wind me up, it takes forty-two muscles to frown, just twenty-eight to smile, but only four to extend my arm and punch someone on the nose.

Amen.

The third is something Jesus once said, and still says today:

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’

By the way, if you’ve been wondering about coming to church, don’t forget ‘Back to Church Sunday’ at 10am on Sunday, September 28. It’s a great chance to come back to church if you’ve not been for a while, or to come along for the very first time and see what goes on.

Bathford Village ShopThanks to all of you that have been patient with us while we have been getting to grips with running the news-agency. We intend business to

continue as before, with a daily delivery service and welcome new customers who would like to have newspaper/magazines ordered or delivered. We expect to be fully operating in the whole of the premises by early September but will take a little longer to decide on the final layout of the shop and new stock items and services. A full range of stationery items will be available from this time. We are very grateful to The Co-op for donating the new shelving units and fitting them for us free of charge. Our staffing plans have been decided and we are pleased that our manager Paul Faulkner will continue but now in a full-time capacity. This should allow him the time to fully take on management of all of the shop activities and developments. We are looking for someone who would like to work 10 hours per week in a project role. We need someone with good IT skills. If you are interested, call into the shop for a job description or for an informal chat with Paul.If you have been in the shop recently, you will see that it is now a busy place. An extra volunteer to help around the shop – not necessarily serving behind the counter – would be good at busy times. If you are not currently involved, do consider joining us and playing a part. Pop in and see Paul in the shop or call Jane Walker on 852926.Thanks to all of you that made donations to assist in the expansion. Our budget

was just under £10,000 with £5000 of this being met through a grant from ‘The Store is the Core’ initiative if we can raise £5000 ourselves. Around £1000 has been generously donated so far. If you would like to help – any donation no matter how small would be welcome.A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: We will be holding a fund-raising quiz night on Saturday November 1. in the Parish Hall. Thanks to Stan Cherry and Hugh Baker, who have volunteered to organise this. Further details next month. Please do let us know if the shop is offering you what you want. Remember as a co-operative BEFA is owned by the community, for the community. We all have a responsibility to make it a success.Maureen Breeze Chair BEFA

The Postbox has moved. If you have arrived at the shop to post a letter and been unable to find the postbox. It has moved a short way up Dovers Lane towards the Green.

Bathford Youth Theatre EnsembleWe are in desperate need of funding & sponsorship in order to keep the group running.Insurance alone is costing us thousands of pounds and unless we can find the money the group will be forced to close. At the moment we are completely self-funded with the money coming from our own pockets! If you can help in anyway or have any information with regards to funding and sponsorship please can you get in contact with us! It would be a real shame to loose the group as those that attend really enjoy the work we do! 01225 851265 or 07939 403159 or email [email protected] Committee
