TheFriendsGrupisupandrunning.A9memberbardwaselectedinMarch.

Weculdnthaveplannedfragrupfindividualswithmregegraphicdiversity

andabundanceftalents.FurfthebardmembersarefrmSuthCarlina,Allyn

Schneiderservingasvicepresident,TwilaGray,JamesGarner,andKarenMcGinty,

Treasurer.FivemembersfthebardarefrmGergia,Dr.RickShields,President,

DtBambach,Secretary,Dr.WasilKhan,HunterHurstandJhnCrawfrd.Each

memberfthebardhasvlunteeredtchairacmmittee.Nwwejustneedcm-

mitteemembersthelpmakeursnefthebestFriendsGrupintheUS.Thatisa

tallchallenge.

Therearever200Friendsgrupswithatleastnegruprepresentingeachfthe

50states.HHIAudubnbeganitsrelatinshipwiththeSavannahNatinalWildlife

RefugeCmplex(SNWRC)whenwebecameapartftheRefugeKeeperPrgram

establishedbytheNatinalAudubnScietymanyyearsag.HHIAudubnadpted

PinckneyIslandNWRastheirrefuge.Aclserelatinshiphasexistedbetweenur

grupandPinckneyIslandNWRvertheyears.ClemDietze,aPinckneyvlunteer

andamemberftheHHIAudubnbard,presentlyservesasliaisnwiththeSNWRC

staff.TheRefugeKeeperPrgramhasgivenwayttheFriendsGrupasaseparate

rganizatinwrkingnbehalffthesevenrefugesintheSavannahCmplex.As

a non-prot 501(c)(3), Friends Groups can advocate for the refuges as well as raise

fundsfrprjectsntherefuges.Wehaveltsfideasnthingstbedne.

WiththepeningfthenewVisitrCenterattheSavannahNWRinJanuary

2010, the Friends Group has taken on a huge challenge—to open a Nature Store, The

GatrHle.TheGatrHlewillbesetupandstaffedbyvlunteersfrmtheFriends

Grup.Ihpemanyfyuwillhelpusut.Inparticular,weneedhelpfrmthsef

yuwhhavewrkedinbusinessaswesetupthestre.Theninefusnthebard

havezerexperienceinretailbusinesssweculduseyurexpertise.Als,weare

recruitingvlunteerstrunthestreandbesalespersns.Ifyuwuldliketapply

to be a volunteer, you can call me at 681-8498. Prots from the Gator Hole will help

fundprjectsnallsevenftherefugesinurcmplex.Thisisfrthewildlifethat

wouldbeagoodtripforthosetoabletodoalotofwalking.Thesanctuarycontains

ponds,pineforest,swampsandhardwoodforest,sothereisquiteavarietyofbirdlife

including29speciesofwarblers.Accessiblerestroomsareavailable,asarepicnic

tables,sobringalunch.WewillleaveMossCreekVillageparkinglotat7:00am

sharpinordertostartbirdingatSilverBluffalittleafter9:00am.Thiswillbeafull

daytrip;weshouldreturntoMossCreekby5:00pm.

Iwillbringdirectionsforbothtripsto ourHoneyHorn picnic on September

15th,aswellastoMossCreekVillageonthedayofeachtrip.Iwillhavesign-up

Ourrainyhotsummerhaspassedandweareofftoagood

startforourfallmigration.Someofourfallwarblersand

winteringshorebirdshavealreadybeenshowingup.

Early rst-of-the-season (FOTS) warblers already sighted

included: Uncommon Prairie and Yellow Warblers as well as

Prothonotary,Black&WhiteandPalmWarblersandAmerica

Redstart,NorthernParulaandCommonYellowthroat.Let’

hopethatthisstartwillbealead-inagreatmigrationlikewe

hadlastfallwhenwetallieda‘bestever’thirtywarblerspe-

cies.

The highlight birdof our summerwastherare Roseate

Spoonbill.Wehadatleasteightreportsinourareaaswell

as many others in SC, NC and GA. This bird is apparently

wideningitsrangeinrecentyears.TheuncommonPineSiskin

hadahugeirruptionintotheSouththispastspringbutonly

twosightingswerereportedonHHI.

Uncommon birds reported during the summer included

Shallow-tailed and Mississippi Kites, Purple Gallinule, Wild

Turkey,LoggerheadShrike,Yellow-billedCuckooandAmeri-

can Bittern. Other good summer nds were: Black-necked

Stilt, Summer Tanager, Blue Grosbeak, Painted & Indigo

Buntings,Whimbrel,OrchardOriole,LeastBitternandRed-

headedWoodpecker.

Latelastspringreports (No Ecobon issued during the

summer)forRAREbirdswere:PurpleSandpiper,Whip-poor-

will, Red-necked Grebe, Solitary Sandpiper, American White

Pelican and Hooded & Worm-eating Warblers. Uncommon

latespringbirdsincluded:White-wingedScoter,RedKnots,Piping Plover, Northern Gannets, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and

Bob White. Other good spring nds were: Bobolink, American

Redstart, Horned Grebe and Spotted Sandpiper.

Many of you know that veterinarian Dr. Benjamin Parker of Bluffton treats injured birds. On occasion his ofce has a require-

menttotransportinjuredbirds,mostlyraptors,totheRaptorCenterinCharleston.Theinjuredbirdsaresecuredintransportation
