The Lady Red Devil Volleyball team is taking the court this season with a few changes, a new Head Coach on the side-lines. Coach Greg Wilson has handed over the reigns to Coach Bonnye McCoy. Wilson stated, “Coach McCoy was a great

player at Lake Gibson and continued her volley-ball career at the University of South Florida where she excelled. She will do a great job with the young ladies and her wealth of knowledge about the game will be very useful to the play-ers she will be training.” Wilson leaves the sidelines having coached five years, winning a

district championship and district runner-up title. Also missing from the sidelines will be some key players Ma-rissa Stinson, a three year player, and Chelsea Wilson an All-County stand-out who started every match in her four year career for the Lady Red Devils. Joining McCoy on the sideline will be for-mer JV Coach, Kelly Flynn, who is moving up to Assistant Head Coach. Coach Jason Hay-den enters his first year as the JV Coach. Come out and support the Lady Red Devils as they represent KHS on the court.

offer this life changing conference to more FFA members. One of the more popular events, Florida Outdoor Adventures at the Leadership Cen-ter had many Kathleen FFA members par-ticipate. They did fun outdoor activities and games that taught them how to be more of

a team and promote lead-ership skills. There was a Ropes Course that in-volved guidance and con-centration. They also got to play paintball which was a big team effort. The members had lots of fun and really enjoyed this camp. FFA members Morgan Carlton and Bonnie Tyer participated in the Farm Bureau Speech in Bartow, Florida on August 31st. All

of the participants had to deliver a five min-ute speech. Each student had to write about the challenges and opportunities of nonrenewable energy. Bonnie and Morgan did a remarkable job representing KHS FFA. To kick off the school year Kathleen’s FFA Alumni is hosting a golf tournament. The Golf Tournament will be hosted at the Sandpiper Golf Course. The registration fee is $50.00 per person. This price includes breakfast, luncheon, prizes, cart and green fees. Prizes will be given away to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places, longest drive and closest to pin. All money earned will be used to pro-vide leadership opportunities for our FFA members. For more information contact Keitha Hall at 863-287-4979 or [email protected].

Kathleen’s FFA is involved and competes in a variety of competition and events throughout the school year. Kathleen’s FFA is also highly involved during the summer months. While many students are sleeping in and laying around, KHS FFA members were hard at work at a variety of events. One of these events in-cluded Forestry Camp. This camp is an annual summer event that helps pre-pare every team for the Forestry Competition. Last year, Kath-leen’s FFA Forestry Team took 4th place at the State competi-tion. We studied Dendrology (trees), common parasites and diseases, how to measure trees, read maps and did compass and pacing. With our hard work, also comes play—we were able to dance, swim and participate in daily fun activities. Our Ag Issues team, Morgan Carlton, Nicole Green, Ary Folds, Tyler Wilford, Bonnie Tyer and Taylor Walker went to state over the summer and won 5th place. They pre-sented their issue, which was the sustainability of organic farming, in front of several judges and an audience. The students had a lot of fun competing and having fun at the State Conven-tion itself. In addition to these activities, during the summer Kathleen FFA members never took the time to cool down. Our very own Morgan Carl-ton took her FFA adventures to our Nation’s Capital as a participant at FFA’s Washington Leadership Conference. Along with several other Florida FFA members, Morgan had the time of her life. Walking over 60 miles, visiting historical documents and museums and even meeting members of the United States Con-gress. Next year the Kathleen FFA is planning to Mrs. Bradner & Mr. Bar-

tuska flew off to Alabama last summer to attend the Space Camp Academy for Educators. The five day program packed over 45 hours of activities, speakers, and experiences that were designed to be taken back and implemented in their classrooms. They par-ticipated in astronaut training simulators, two simulated space shuttle missions and several aviation challenge water activities! Our NASA Grant paid for their trip as part of professional develop-ment follow-up.

Mrs. Povey has been rec-ommended to attend Project Mastery Training, a three year research project fo-cused on developing high quality math and science instruction for students who participate in alternate as-sessments. Congratulations Mrs. Povey.

Awards Ceremony Monday

We have a wonder-ful Red Devil Fellow-ship of Christian Ath-letes Club at KHS. We are strong, power-ful and consistent. We encourage all those involved in competition

(including our awesome FFA) and anyone that wants to be a part of FCA to come to our Donuts and Devotions any Thursday morning from 6:30 a.m. to 6:55 a.m. in the Choice Room. We had a wonderful start to our year with a FCA Sports Breakfast that was specifically tar-geted for our fall student-athletes and club members. Thanks to our wonderful administration, www.mythanatos.com, First Baptist Church at

the Mall, and Krispy Kream Donuts, students were able to get out a few minutes of 2nd and 3rd period to receive two fresh donuts and fel-lowship. FCA is continuing to go strong through meetings and other events. We are challenging our group to attend a Leadership Training on 9-25-10 and also orga-nizing transportation over to Denison Field in Winter Haven for Fields of Faith on 10-13-10. Two November events are also on the calendar where we will be cleaning up our community and our campus in back to back weeks. On Nov. 6, 2010, we will clean up our com-munity and on Nov. 13, 2010, we will clean up our campus after the KHS vs. LHS football game. If you or anyone you know wants to become more involved in this awesome club, please contact Coach Holmes or Coach Troutman!

Kathleen High School will be Florida’s first com-munity—and one of only five in the nation—to host a live downlink this school year with crew members aboard the International Space Station—Expedition 25/26. A date for the downlink will be scheduled in Sep-tember during an online conference with NASA. “This will be a once in a lifetime event for our students and a great honor for our school,” said Mrs. Bradner. Facilitated by Teaching From Space, A NASA

Education Office, the downlink will allow the International Space Station (ISS) crew members to perform curriculum-based activities in space, demonstrate basic principles of science, math, engi-neering and geography and answer questions in real-time from students on Earth. More than 500 K-12 students will participate in the live downlink with ISS astronauts. Way to go Mrs. Bradner for making this possible for our students——you rock!
