Peninsula Minor Hockey AssociationHELPING OUR TEAM MANAGERS

We would like everyone to take a minute and think about how hard our Team managers work through-out the hockey season. They have a lot on their plates and do an amazing job. This year we would like all parents to think about jobs that they could do to help take the load off the team managers. There are lots of ways to help out and do your part:

-Key person (arriving 30-40 minutes early to open a dressing room for every ice slot)

- Year end party organizer

-Snack organizer

-Time keeper (home games only)

-Score keeper (home games only)

-Music DJ (home games only)

-Dryland coordinator/trainer

-Treasurer

INTERESTED IN OFFICIATING

A career as a hockey official teaches kids many valuable skills and also provides income. For those who are interested in learning more please visit the BC Hockey website at www.bchockey.net . We are always short on referees and PMHA would like to encourage any players or parents who are interested in officiating to take an officiating course and become certified. Officiating clinic times and dates are also listed on the BC Hockey website.

Coaching (NCCP), officiating (HCOP) and safety (HCSP) clinic registration is completed online by way of the Hockey Canada E-Learning. Registrants create an E-learning account, and then register for their desired clinic. E-learning accounts are a one-time setup and will recognize each member only by their email address (note: family members will need to use separate email accounts). More information is available below in the Online Clinic Registration Instructions and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). www.bchockey.net

PANTHER’S URGENTLY NEEDS BILLET FAMILIES FOR THIS SEASON

The Peninsula Panther’s Junior B hockey club is in urgent need of billet families for this 2010/2011 hockey season. They are short a few homes for there player’s this year and really need support from the PMHA families. Billet families enjoy several “perks” throughout the

season-such as 2 Panther’s season tickets, monthly compensation of $300.00 from the Panther’s family, Christmas party, Year end party, occasional passes to the Grizzles games and being part of a successful, exciting hockey team!!!

The Panther’s billeting program is second to none and without local host families the hockey club would be hard pressed to succeed.

If you would like more information on becoming part of the Panther family, please contact the Panther’s Billet coordinator Michele Bryan at [email protected] or call Michelle at (250) 655-7083

REMINDER TO ALL PLAYERS, COACHES AND PARENTS:

Peninsula Minor Hockey AssociationPMHA DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2010/2011

We are very excited this year to have Dennise Bowles and her Power Unlimited team running development for PMHA. In addition to Dennise's power skating sessions, her staff of knowledgeablehockey coaches will be running core hockey development sessions. We are also in the process of setting up some coach development sessions with these individuals.

The development sessions for this year will be run on Monday evenings during the following time slots starting on September 20:

Monday 3:30pm 4:20pm B 50 development ice

Monday 4:30pm 5:20pm B 50 development iceMonday 5:45pm 6:35pm A 50 development ice

Monday 6:45pm 7:35pm A 50 development ice

A master schedule will be set up in the next couple of weeks and posted on the website. Most of these sessions will be part of the regular development program funded through registration, and will be assigned to teams. However, approximately once a month the Monday sessions will be user-pay, where each skater will be able to pay for the session with development "punch passes" purchased online at the PMHA website. To avoid the confusion of lost or forgotten cards, no passes will be physically handed out. Instead there will be a master list kept with how many sessions each player has purchased, and used sessions will be marked off as the season progresses. Unlike last year, there will be no $5 dropins allowed to these development sessions, so in order to attend the user -pay sessions a punch pass must be purchased online. The passes sell as one for $10 or five for $45 and have to be purchased at least 2 days prior to the desired session. Any unused passes can be used towards development for next year. There will be representatives from each division to manage the user-pay ice sessions. As the sessions become available, your divisional representative will send out an email and invite you to sign up for the session. These sessions will have limited attendance, so sign up early, as a punch card purchase does not guarantee a place in the session.

PMHA Punch Cards can be purchased on the PMHA website. Please go to the Registration page, click the link to go online to pay for

your Development session or 5 sessions for $45.00 Development Pass

WELCOME ALL NEW PLAYERS TO PMHAWe had a successful turn-out with almost 500 players, playing in the PMHA this season. Please have your children dressed in proper fitting gear. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CHILD HOME IF HE OR SHE IS SICK

We have crazy flues and illnesses that go around yearly, PMHA asks you to please not bring your child to the rink if they are ill. Flu travel’s through the dressing rooms like a shooting bullet and we want to help prevent that this year especially with the H1N1 virus out there. E-mail your manager or coach and let them know that your player is sick. Help prevent yourself and your children from getting these flues by:

-healthy eating-plenty of exercise and fresh air-good hand washing -always wash your hands before you eat-avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth at all times-stay home when you feel sick or have influenza symptoms-avoid close contact with people who are sick

Respect in Sport / SpeakOut!

BC Hockey has made a change the current SpeakOut! program concept. After successful implementation by Sport Manitoba/Hockey Manitoba, it was decided that BC Hockey will join a National initiative to implement the Respect in Sport educational tool. Certification through Respect In Sport will be the equivalent to certification received when taking a SpeakOut! course.

RiS is an on-line training course for coaches and sport leaders. It is designed as a tool to assist coaches in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sport. The on-line course curriculum is broken into six (6), 30 minute modules hours to complete and includes audio/visual presentations, quizzes and printable handouts. Another beneficial feature of the program is that it does not need to be done all at once, it can be completed at your leisure.

The benefits of the new system include:

1. Time Commitment – The course will take an estimated 2.5 hours with the delegate’s HCR SpeakOut! accreditation updated immediately upon completion.

2. Availability / Access – The course is accessible over the internet therefore the delegates dictate when and where they take the course. They can also complete the course at their own speed.

3. Flexibility – Delegates can access the Respect in Sport on-line course at any time (by way of user name and password) therefore are able to complete one module at a time.

4. E-Learning Platform – This is an introduction to the capabilities of training delegates with online tools and resources. The course contains many handouts which remain accessible after the course is complete. If a paper copy of any of the documents or the accreditation certificate is required it can be printed from the site.

5. Not Sport Specific – Respect in Sport is not specific to any sport. However the learning principals within are common to anyone acting as a sport leader. The consensus is that many of our volunteers coach/assist in other sports. The need to educate our sport leaders is of significant importance, however this allows for some reduction in the duplication of information.
