City of Culture Legacy

The North Liverpool Culture Committee was set up in 2007 to create a legacy for the City and North Liverpool as we celebrated the year of culture in 2008.

Rotunda is pleased to announce that john Whelan (rotunda arts coordinator) chairs the committee, which includes key arts providers from across the city and community organisations that explore culture and the arts as a means of regeneration.

Libby McKay founder of rotunda resigned as chair, handing the mantel to john Whelan.

John said “I wish to thank libby for her contribution and passion to the arts in north Liverpool. I am keen to take the north Liverpool culture committee to the next level, keying in the strategic objectives of regeneration”.

A brand new logo was designed and voted on by the group that shows how strong the North of the City is with creativity and we see it mov-ing forward in the future!

if any organisations or artist’s would like to get involved moving for-ward please give John a call on 0151 207 2176.

Well Done - to our Students!!!Massive congratulations to our amazing 2012 Foundation Learning Students who achieved an equivalent to half a GCSE as part of the Aope ASDAN Qualification - Enterprise and Employability Awards in only 15 weeks!! The subjects they undertook included:

Enterprise - Building entrepreneurial skillsBeliefs and Values - which include looking at your local community and how it fits into your lifePSHE - Is about your every day life how to take care of your individual health and wellbeing.Experience of work award is about building and developing strong employ-ability skills from interview skills, effective CV writing and world wide job searching!

Additionally, even with such a tight time frame, our students had to juggle their home and personal lives which ranged from their duties as young carers for family members, while other students battled with the conditions ADHD/ASD - but with our facilitation and their determination, hard work - as well as the one to one support in class and world tutors they were able to not only achieve a qualification but develop in their confidence and self esteem.

The ARE course is not just about sitting around and writing in handouts - they include life coaching sessions, visits to workplaces & events and taking part in seeing your enterprise in action.

Our wonderful students worked through the Enterprise course gaining not only strong entrepreneurial skills butbuilding business plans, working together, learning about stock control and bringing the venture to life. This was done at a huge event at Rotunda College the‘Titanic Day’ - the group hadtheir very own stall successfully selling retro sweets.

Not only did they make a profit but they had a lot of fun doing it.

Volunteer/Garden NewsSeptember’s wonderful autumn colours are fast on our heels, with shorter days and longer nights approaching; Kirkdale’s Community Garden is looking even more fruitful.

We are now in the process of harvesting our apples, pears, potatoes and herbs, as well as planting in our winter-greens, onions and garlic for spring.

It’s such an exciting time of the year, preparing for the next and the fantastic healthy food options the whole community can share - for FREE! We are very happy that Mr Terry Reilly who has a wealth of experience in landscaping and horticulture has joined the Kirkdale Community Garden project as Head Volunteer Gardener, supporting all our local volunteers produce the culinary delights we have so far.

Terry is available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for anyone wanting to know more about ‘Urban Home Grown Goodies’ or simply get involved in making Kirkdale Beautiful and a healthy place to live.

The project has been a fantastic opportunity, to not only distract the young people from harmful activities, but also get to know what it is they would like to do in their com-munity.

A full report and evaluation about the project is available on our website www.thero-tunda.org.uk

This will be proudly displayed in our heritage bistro and is great example of how much things have changed! We are busy gathering the content for our exhibition, which will include local heroes and characters, how the place and people have changed, Irish migration, how people have made ends meet - then and now, personal stories and memories and information for a local heritage trail.
