Dear Members,

Welcome back to all of our

summer vacationers. We have

missed you. We had a busy

summer here at the club, with lots

of activities for the entire family.

Junior activities were abundant

with camps, Dive-in Movies, Kids’

Night Out events, Quick Start tennis

clinics, complimentary golf clinics

and Parent-Child tournaments. The

parents were entertained with

monthly poolside music events,

Friday night tennis mixers,

Thursday night jazz, Trivia Night,

Ladies’ Night Out golf and monthly

MGA golf events.

I hope you had an

opportunity to attend the Annual

Pep Rally with the Dazzlers, UF

cheerleaders, Albert and Alberta,

a surprise visit by Mr. 2-Bits

and a delicious buffet.

The Labor Day Barbeque was a

big hit with a DJ, pool games, and a

water bounce house. Other activities

scheduled for September are the

ever-popular Trivia Night on the 6th, an

Oyster Roast on the 8th, a

Ladies Luncheon on the 26th and a

Father Daughter Dinner/Dance on the

29th. Details about these events are

included elsewhere in the newsletter.

Our new chef, Patrick Jones, has taken

the dining experience at the club to a

new level. I would strongly recommend

that you make reservations if you are

planning on dining at the club. In fact,

due to increased demand, we are ex-

tending our Friday night hours until 10

p.m. In other dining room news, our

Sunday evening dinner service will be

discontinued until next spring.

Gator Country has been going on for several years. It was set up to provide a little variety and challenge and so far we are involved with six other clubs in our area. They include: Chiefland, Haile Plantation, Lake City, Quail Heights, University of Florida and Williston. These tournaments are open to all lady members of the GG&CC and each month, except December and January, we visit one of these clubs for a gross/net tournament.

On September 12, 2012 we will be travelling to Chiefland for our first game of the season. Details are on the sign-up sheet in the Ladies’ Locker Room and I will be calling Chiefland with our list of attendees on Friday, September 7.

GWGA News

Hello Everyone!

The summer is over, and that takes us right into football season. I know everyone is as excited about football as I am, but let’s not forget about our tennis! We have some new classes starting in September and hopefully there is a class for everyone.

Our two new courts will be up and running soon, although the rain has pushed the opening back a couple of days. We will keep everyone updated on the progress.

With all of the extra play on the courts, it is important to reserve the courts for play. The best way to ensure that you have a court is to e-mail or text me the day before. If there is a conflict, I will let you know and find another time for you. Thanks for your help with this, we want to make sure that everyone gets a court when they want one.

Look for our new Babolat racquets and accessories in the pro shop soon. We will have demos for you to try them out and new strings to make your existing racquet work better. We also have a new shipment of Gainesville Country Club dri-fit shirts coming. Check out the new long sleeve version!

If you have questions regarding any of the new programs, please let me know. I look forward to seeing everyone out on the tennis courts.

The Course Report

Hours of Operation

Bunker Etiquette How many times have you approached a bunker and found the sand not raked, or your ball in a footprint? Many people may have skipped over the first section of the Rule Book. It is the etiquette section and it is well worth a read. One of the sentences in the introduction states “The overriding principle is that consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times.”

Here are a few simple etiquette points to remember about playing from a bunker and what you need to do afterward:

Generally, you should enter a bunker from the “low side” of the bunker. That is the side furthest from the putting green. This will help the superintendent to maintain the bunker faces.

Locate a bunker rake before you go into a bunker and bring it into the bunker with you. There is no penalty if you lay the rake down in the bunker provided you do nothing to test the condition of the bunker.

After playing from the bunker, use the bunker rake to smooth the sand in the bunker. Try to make it look like no one has disturbed the sand since the maintenance staff groomed the bunkers that morning.

Exit the bunker on the “low side” of the bunker; the same way you came into it.

After exiting the bunker, remove the excess sand from your shoes by lightly tapping the sides of your shoes with a club or gently stomping them on the ground. This will prevent sand from being “tracked” onto the putting green.

Place the bunker rake in the grass near where you walk in and out of the bunker. Just make sure it is on the low side of the bunker or the side away from the putting green.

Here’s a tip for you for the next time you have to drop in a bunker: watch where you stand or walk. The last thing you want to do is to create a bunch of footprints that your ball may end up in after you drop.

Clubhouse Lunch is served Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

(372-1458) Dinner is served Wednesday and Thursday from 5-9 p.m. Dinner is served on Friday night from 5-10 p.m. Champagne Brunch is served on Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Tennis Courts Open 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Sunday

Pool Open 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Sunday

The following excerpt is reprinted from the FSGA Newsletter

September in North Florida brings threat of hurricanes, football season and some much needed relief from the sweltering temperatures of August. We have had a hot summer and are making preparations to get the golf course ready for winter. We will perform our last core aerification of the year this month. We will also begin raising heights of cut on the golf course and working on our fall pre-emergent and fertility programs.

Tree work, cart path repairs and other detail items will accelerate when the turf grass growth rate slows down some. We are still utilizing growth regulators on the greens, tees and fairways to minimize clipping yield and promote dense turf. Dense turf is a great water filter and it naturally suppresses competition from undesirable weeds.

The drain on number nine by the green that was backing up has been replaced and is working well now. Next, we will shift our drainage efforts to hole number three to firm up the soft area on the left front of the green.

We hope you are enjoying the course, and look forward to providing you with some great playing conditions to enjoy the fall weather. Please respect the course, follow cart rules and use good judgment when driving your carts on the golf course. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, stop me on the course or e-mail me at [email protected] .

Michael A. Rowe Golf Course Superintendent
