No, not really; broke a toe and dislocated a finger. All the fun you can have in Yuma, Arizona, in humid and hotter weather. I thank you all for your concerns and get well wishes. I have been gathering information concerning the upcoming ham events throughout Arizona. I thank you folks for letting me know far in advance of events so I can schedule you into my travel plans. I also am able to ensure I have no scheduling conflicts So please keep the information flowing. Now for an announcement: The Arizona State Convention will be help in Williams, Arizona, in 2014. So mark your calendars now July 18 th , 19 th and 20 th , 2014. More information concerning the event will follow so pay attention to the ARCA web site and the Section newsletter we will keep you informed. I spent Saturday, 31 August, in Tucson at the Arizona Outlaw Contest Club Annual Roundup. The Outlaw Contest Club is an ARRL affiliated club. The roundup was held at the Desert Diamond Casino and Hotel. It was an afternoon event that had outstanding food and great conversation with amateurs whose main interest is contesting. Several awards were given out and there was a presentation by N2IC. In his presentation, “DX Contest Gunslinging from Outlaw Territory" N2IC explained how to be successful at contesting no matter how small your station is. A presentation by Mike Fulcher KC7V on “20 Years of Voodoo Radio" was a very interesting presentation about operations in Africa. One thing I would like to say about this club is that even though the emphasis is on the contesting area the club members are amateur radio operators that have lots of experience with antennas and radio operations. They are very helpful and willing to help new hams learn HF operations. Visit their web site, www.arizonaoutlaws.net/ Outlaw Bob K8IA a rough, scruffy looking hombre who is really a great guy to get to know. Thank you Outlaw President Mike Fulcher KC7V for the invite - the wife and I had a great time. Emergency Coordinator September is National Preparedness Month. Hams always talk about themselves being prepared.

Hopefully part of the preparation is also having your family prepared so you will be able to respond to an emergency after you know they are safe. Now is the time to reach out to your community as a ham. Let’s promote National Preparedness Month and make everyone aware of what ham radio can do in the time of an emergency. Want more information, visit www.community.fema.gov or contact your local DEC / Dennis Bietry – KE7EJF ARES Section Emergency Coordinator [email protected]

Arizona Official Observers Needed If you live in Arizona and would like to become an ARRL Official Observer, you are invited to

become one. The Official Observer program has been sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) for more than 50 years to help amateurs help each other. OO appointees have assisted thousands of amateurs maintain their transmitting equipment and helping ensure operating procedures are in compliance with the regulations. The object of the OO program is to notify amateurs by mail of operating/technical irregularities before they come to the attention of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The OO performs his/her function by listening rather than transmitting, keeping an ear out for such things as frequency instability, harmonics, hum, key clicks, broad signals, distorted audio, over deviation, out-of-band operation, etc. The OO completes his/her task once the notification card is sent. In hard-core rule violation cases, OO's refer problems to higher echelons of the Amateur Auxiliary, and may be requested to gather evidence for possible FCC enforcement actions. Requirements:

I keep hearing that there are no young hams at club meetings. Why don’t we all bring a young ham to the meeting? I went to my first year of club meetings with my Elmer. Don’t think I would have gone otherwise. Don’t have an Elmer; let me know I will find one for you. Tom Fagan K7DF Assistant Section Manager Youth and Scouting.
