Growing in Service, Growing inFaith, Growing in Christ -- mission
statement of St. Francis Church
Our mission statement -- Growing in Service, Growing in
Faith, Growing in Christ -- is easy to remember, because its a
mnemonic forSt. Francis Church: SFCservice, faith, Christ.
But it also reflects whats important to us and points us in the di-
rection we want to head.
One thing that is common to all three parts of our mission
statement is the word growing. St. Francis Church is a church
focused on growthnot just in numbers of members, but in
reaching out to our community, in caring for one another, and in
deepening our relationship with God. We are hoping that many
people come and see what St. Francis is like on Sunday, Septem-
ber 8, Test Drive Sunday, as we worship, eat, and play together.
One member has asked, Why would people come to St.
Francis? What do we have to offer? Its a question worth ask-
ing. I suspect that each of us would answer it slightly differently.
How St. Francis nurtures and feeds each of our souls depends
upon our gifts and passions. My mother, who was extremely hard
of hearing, didnt care about music during worship. For others,
music attunes them to God; its their means for connecting with
the Divine each Sunday. For some of us our community service
ministries (tutoring, Food Pantry, etc.) represent the most impor-
tant aspects of what we do and who we are. For others, its the
support and care we provide to one another and the enjoyment we

point to particular programs we offer, like Chris-
tian formation for children and adults, Youth
Group, Bible study, prayer group. All of these
are valid answers to the question, Why St.
Francis? How would your life be diminished
without St. Francis? How would you answer
this question? Why do you come to St. Francis?
In what ways would you feel bereft if the com-
munity of St. Francis Church suddenly disap-
peared? The answer to those questions is the
story we have to tell. You have that story in
your heart. Share it with others. Invite them tobe a part of what youve found at St. Francis

see, taking us for a test drive, on Sep 8 and be-
yond.

Upcoming EventsTest Drive Sunday
Imagine that you are thinking about going back to church or are looking for a different
church home. It can be intimidating to show up someplace, not knowing anyone, not knowing
the worship service, not knowing if they have good coffee!
Its just this kind of person, the seeking kind, the kind we ourselves were before we
found St. Francis, we want to come to Test Drive Sunday. We hope that all the hoopla, fun,
cake and easy-to-follow worship will make the visit a lot less intimidating, and our guests can
feel welcome, feel comfortable, feel invited to share in the abundant love of God that we all findin our church home.
The worship part is thoroughly planned and participants assigned, as always. But the rest
still needs help from each of us. Choose a job below, wear your church T-Shirt if you have one,
and welcome our guests.

This should be a fun day for us, and it may result in growth in our congregation. Most

St. Francis Clowns Around
Under the Big Top
When Eureka gathers as a community,
St. Francis is there! This year, on Friday,
September 6th and Saturday, September 7th we
will have a booth at the Eureka Days fair to
talk with people and offer temporary tattoos.
For the first time in a long time, St. Francis
will also participate in Saturday mornings pa-
rade. The theme of this years parade is Under
the Big Top. Could there be any better addi-tion to this parade than St. Francis own
clowns, Carly Champlin and Gina Nessel?
Along with our clowns, we need other
members to be part of the parade to help pass
out our Test Drive invitations and goodies.
Kids (especially) and adults - Want to walk
with St. Francis in the parade and give out
goodies to the community? Parade walkers
set up at 9:30 Saturday.
Our presence at Eureka Days has beengrowing year by year. Now people expect to
see us and line up to visit with our clowns, get
temporary tattoos and enjoy themselves. We
have a lot of fun, too! If you wish you had
joined in the fun at Concerts on Central, think
of Eureka days as one final chance this year.
Jack Lauless reports that we need additional St.
Francis volunteers in all of the time slots Fri-
day night and Saturday. If you have a coupleof hours to work and play, please come down
to the fairgrounds any time after 5:00 on Fri-
day or after 11:00 on Saturday.
Fun and Frolic Fellowship
Often when St. Francis folks lift up their
voices in song, its a solemn, worshipful occa-
sion.
Then theres St. Francis second annual
weenie roast and karaoke blast. Thats a differ-
ent kind of occasion: different music, different
setting, same fellowship, same joyful noises.
Dont miss it!
Date: Saturday evening, September 28th
Place: Judy Codys house, yard and stage for
soloists and small, rowdy groups. Maps avail-
able at coffee hour.
Food: Hot dogs and fire pit provided. Every-
one please bring a dish and a drink.

September 12th
After an invigorating discussion of Fan-
nie Flaggs Cant Wait to Get to Heaven, we are
looking forward to reading John Knowles clas-
sic favorite, A Separate Peace at our next meet-
ing on Thursday, September 12th.
The story is set at a boys boarding
school in New England during the early years of
World War II. It tells the story of friends Gene,
a lonely, introverted intellectual and Phineas, a
handsome daredevil athlete. What happens to
the boys, like the war itself, banishes the inno-
cence of the friends and their world.

Highlights of the Bishops
Committee Meeting
Sunday, August 18, 2013
Opening business
Mike Booker moved and Rich Mayfield seconded that minutes from the July meeting be
accepted. The motion passed unanimously.
Lori Scissorss last day as music director was today. Pastor Sally has begun searching for a
new music director and has posted some ads. We have substitutes for the interim.
Last month we discussed the automatic back-up software for our data. Sally stated that the
company says that the security is military grade and should be reliable. We will have a pet blessing this year the first Sunday in October. The blessing will be out-
side at the Masonic Lodge and will just be the blessing without extra activities. We will have
booklets and offer blessings at 1:00 and 2:00. Information will be in the Current Newsmagazine.
Mens Group: Michael Weaver is planning to put out more information about the group.
Sally will check with him for updates.
Youth group will continue to meet under the leadership of the Skip and Patti Moreland and
will be scheduling time to get together.
Marketing and Communications is overseeing Eureka Days and walking in the parade.
They are also coordinating Test Drive Sunday.
Adult Forum committee is meeting tomorrow and welcomes input.
Sally will meet with Lynn Wickberg who will be teaching Sunday School. She will be with
us for nine months.
Sue Schmidt moved that we give Sally two weeks off at Sallys discretion to compensateher for the extra hours she will be investing with Lynn. Rich Mayfield seconded the motion. Thecommittee discussed the current budget and the fact that it is probably best to try to budget for in-creased financial compensation for Sally in next years budget. We will have a supply priest fill in
for the Sundays that Sally will be off. Mike Booker called the motion. The motion passed unani-mously.
Kevin Broom reminded us of our goal to be a self-sustaining congregation by 2019. He
suggested that we set additional goals for giving of time, energy, and talents. He proposed metrics
to measure the rate of volunteering and the level of volunteering. He asked if we should measure
and manage volunteering if it is part of a larger goal of becoming self-sustaining. He pointed out
that in order the sustain something, it must be measured. He asked us to consider whether or not it
is worthwhile to measure our volunteering. The majority of the committee members feel that vol-
unteering should somehow be measured. Rather than measuring the level of volunteering, we
could focus on the outcomes from the volunteering and whether or not the volunteering adds value

to the organization. We discussed starting by measuring the percentage of parishioners who volun-teer in some capacity and then evaluating whether or not that rate is sustained and adds value tothe organization. At this point a subcommittee will continue the work on further details for the
strategic plan.
Treasurers report
Suzanne was unable to send out financials this month. She will send them out as soon as
possible.
Vicars report
Sally attended the Church Development Institute and relayed that they discussed that mostchurch organizations have a core group of volunteers with additional people volunteering at lesserlevels. The core group tends to be the smallest, but that is not true for St. Francis. We have a lar-
ger percentage of our parishioners in the core group.
Closing Business
Rich Mayfield will provide food next time with Suzannes help.
Closing prayer offered by Michael Booker.
Next meeting: September 15.
Jackie Selle, Clerk
Eureka Food Pantry Needs
Thanks to everyone who has been so gen-
erous with your donations. As we all know, the
need never stops and supplies are critically low.
There is almost no cereal. And a desperate need
for canned family meals such as macaroni and
cheese, spaghetti, chili, etc.
Personal hygiene products cannot be pur-
chased with food stamps so toilet paper, soap
toothpaste, etc. are also welcomed.

ESM
Do you ever feel confused by church jargon oracronyms that you figure you should know but
dont? You are not alone! Heres a start at un-
derstanding some of the alphabet soup you
might hear around the parish.
What: This is the Episcopal School For Minis-
try. The school is a function of the Diocese of
Missouri and offers a variety of conferences,
workshops and programs for the benefit of thepeople of the diocese.
Why: The focus of ESM is forming disciples
of Jesus for all the ministries of the baptized.
ESM enriches students' capacity for ministry.
The school provides options for those called to
ordination and also for those seeking to develop
their skills as lay ministers.
Why so special: ESM is a school designed
in the ancient Christian sense: it also feels like
an ideal learning community. Students and in-
structors are together for classes, for worship,
meals and fellowship.
When: ESMs theological formation
program meets one weekend a month through-
out the year. Friday nights work and worship
include all students and staff, learning on a topic
of common interest and ending with fellowship
that generally includes wine and chocolate. Sat-
urday includes two class session blocks for each
class offered that semester as well as worship
and meals for all students and instructors.
Who: Anyone is welcome, even encouraged,
whether or not they feel a call to any ordained
ministry.
For more: Check out the website
www.diocesemo.org Talk to Michael
Booker, current member of ESM board and
graduate of the theological formation program,
to Kathleen McDonald, current student in the
same program, or to Jack Lauless who com-
pleted the Congregational Development pro-
gram.
Our Eden Student
Beginning Sep 8, Lynn Wickberg will
lead our Christian formation for children pro-
gram. Lynn is a second year student at Eden
Theological Seminary, a United Church ofChrist seminary in Webster Groves (where
Pastor Sally graduated). Lynn and her hus-
band live in Vermont; they have grown chil-
dren. Lynn was trained as a Registered Nurse,
went to medical school, and became a Medical
Doctor. Her field was psychiatry and her spe-
cialty was children.
Lynn is a member of the United
Church of Christ and has served that church in
various capacities over the years, including
teaching Sunday school. During her first year
at Eden, Lynn worshipped fairly regularly at
Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Webster
Groves, since its right across the street from
Eden Seminary. Shes somewhat familiar with

We will offer Lynn a range of experiences
during her 9 months with us. Lynn will be work-
ing for us 10 hours per week (we are paying her),
so she will be able to participate in additional
ways, beyond just leading our childrens forma-
tion. Pastor Sally will be Lynns field educa-
tion supervisor, providing Lynn an opportunity
to see what its like to pastor a congregation.
Please welcome Lynn to our St. Francis family.
Hats Off to Linda Doolittle
The entire parish owes a standing ovation
to Linda Doolittle for her years of service in
teaching our children and surrounding them with
energy, creativity, and love. Linda and John have
sold their home and are moving to the Lake of the
Ozarks. Theyll retain an apartment in the area
and be in Eureka frequently. While we wont see
Linda as consistently, she and John will still be a
part of St. Francis. Thank you, Linda, for your
care for our precious youngest members.
Music Director Search
We are seeking our next Music Di-
rector for St. Francis Church. During our
search, were grateful to Earl Naylor for
serving as our interim musician. On Sep-
tember 15, Chuck Doyle, a candidate for the
position, will rehearse that Sundays hymns
with the choir and play the organ during
worship.
How have we approached finding ournext Music Director? Weve placed an ad
on the American Guild of Organists web-
site. Weve advertised the position at the
following colleges: Washington University,
St. Louis University, Maryville University,
Eden Seminary, Jefferson College, Univer-
sity of MissouriSt. Louis, St. Louis Com-munity CollegeWildwood, Webster Uni-
versity, and the Community Music School.
Weve also shared the ad with the President
of the Organ Society. God will put the right
person in our path. We just have to be pa-
tientand keep our ears open.

Consider This
What Is the Promise?
When I took this picture in our community garden early this summer, I saw this beautiful
squash blossom as a promise of zucchini to come. I took this photo and sent it to Pastor Sally for
the website so that we could all see our partners in creation work in progress. I knew that, hav-
ing found a bush variety of the squash, we could grow lots of zucchini in a small place and harvest
enough to give most to the Eureka Food Pantry and still have plenty for us.
That promise turned out to be closer to the well see that parents give their kids. A
month after I took this picture of promised abundance, we had to uproot all the zucchini and throw
them in the trash (not even compost them!) because the bugs had taken over.
Where was the divine in this? Were we promised what I saw in this blossoma crop of
healthy, delicious food that would feed us and our hungry neighbors? I know that a lovely squash
blossom is not quite the same level of covenant we experience in scripture. I know that it takes
only a little zucchini to be enough for most of us, and that some other gardeners might bring cropsto the pantry. Still, I was very disappointed.
Until, that is, my neighbor stopped me on the
road and asked if I needed any zucchini. He had buckets
full that he couldnt use and was hesitant to just throw
them away. Hallelujah! Now we have enough for our-
selves and LOTS for the food pantry. Promise fulfilled,
just not the way I thought it would be. Life is good.

Zucchini Cupcakes, submitted by Sylvia Ahmad
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
2 eggs
1 cup shredded carrot (about 1 large carrot)
1 cup shredded zucchini (about 1 small zucchini)
1/3 cup milk
Frosting (see Frosting suggestions, below)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line muffin pan with paper liners.
In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.
In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, butter and eggs until smooth. Add shredded carrot and
zucchini, beating until mixed. Alternately stir in flour mixture and milk, making three addi-
tions of flour mixture and two of milk, beating until smooth (see Tips).
Scoop batter in prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden
brown and tops of cupcakes spring back when lightly touched. Let cool in pan on rack for 10
minutes. Remove from pan and let cool completely on rack. Top cooled cupcakes with frost-
ing.
Frosting suggestions: Cream Cheese Icing, Orange Cream Cheese Icing, or Caramel Frosting.
Frosting recipes can be found in the 150 Best Cupcake Recipes cookbook by Julie Hasson.
Tips: It is best to use a spoon or spatula to stir the carrot and zucchini together with the flour
mixture rather tan a whisk because the vegetables tend to get gummed up in the whisk. Be
sure to use nice crisp vegetables for this recipe because they shred well.
Variation: Add 1/3 cup loosely packed sweetened flaked coconut to the batter.

Letter from Bishop Smith
Dear People of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri:
I want to let you all know some exciting news related to our Diocese. The Episcopal Dio-
cese of Missouri and St. Stanislaus Kostka in St. Louis are in discussions that could lead to the
church coming into union with the Diocese, should both parties agree that this is in their best inter-
ests and in best service to Christ.
I am asking the Standing Committee of the Diocese to pursue this matter with me in order
to discern the best course of action. A next step will be an informal gathering that I will set be-
tween the Standing Committee and the board of St. Stanislaus. I had the opportunity to meet with
the board and the parishioners at St. Stanislaus on August 25 and found it to be a rewarding ex-
perience. Developing these relationships will be important as we begin to explore this matter fur-
ther. Should our Diocese and St. Stanislaus determine that a union is the proper course, I would
then make an application to the Presiding Bishop on behalf of St. Stanislaus.
Many steps must be taken together as we pursue the possibilities of a new relationship. I
am confident that with open hearts and minds, the proper path will be revealed. The members of
the Standing Committee and I welcome your thoughts on this potential union. In the meantime, I
invite you to read a more detailed letter that I sent to our clergy on these discussions on the Dioce-
san website, diocesemo.org.
Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. George Wayne Smith

St. Francis Helps
Choose the statement that makes the most sense:
_____ King Henry VIII had a tutor.
_____ King Henry VIII was a tutor.
If you could help a student prepare for this history/spelling quiz, you might fit right in with
the tutors who are part of the St. Francis tutoring ministry. Although each volunteer tutor has dif-
ferent areas of expertise and each student wanting help has different needs, so far we have been
able to match the needs with the experts and to help kids learn when they get stuck.
Just after Labor Day, St. Francis will begin our third season of helping elementary, middle
and high school neighbors with their schoolwork. A few of our students are long-termers who
need support every week with their homework, but most are older students who hit a stumbling
block with writing, math, or science, and need a few weeks of support while they reach the neces-
sary level of competence. The tutors are also always ready for kids in panic mode who are facing
a mid-term test or the due date for a major project not yet started.
Our tutoring ministry is the brainchild of Jackie and Kevin Selle, who saw that private tutors in our
area charge more than $50 an hour. St. Francis can provide services and the space for free. To
our great pleasure, our students so far have been a mix of kids from neighboring school districts
and our own kids. Our own kids have acted as tutors, too. Jackie remains in charge of organizing
the program, contacting parents and matching student needs with tutor strengths.
If you can help out by sharing your expertise in writing, math, language, science, etc. please call
Jackie. At this moment (and needs change quickly!) we particularly need more tutors who can help
elementary students. If you know a student who could use a little help, check out our web page
article and share it with the student and parents. If you can help by making some cookies or other
easy treats that we can offer people on Wednesday nights,
let Jackie know, too.

Thinking Big
By Bob Sitze
Okay, listen up. Im working on a big problem with simple living, and I need to think big.
The problem: Simple living is an overarching idea that could save the world, but its not getting
enough play in our culture. Those who live simply are hiding in cabins somewhere in rural Maine
or living in communities of practice disguised as assisted living facilities. Simple living lan-
guishes in anonymity like the fourth-place finisher in a track meet. This movement stays down at
the small-potatoes level in our cuture, while odd-duck political candidates and has-been television
celebrities grab headlines.
So Ive been thinking about some really big solutions:
Simplicity has to become a commodity that sells well. Big money could make simple living
into a profit center. Wal-Mart could pick up this idea.
Simplicity needs a big name spokesperson, so lets find someone with a lot of fans. Simple
living can get free air time, and gather Friends, and other chirpers.
Lets crank up YouTube, so nightly television news will show babies, pets, or anonymous
eccentrics doing something really cute while living simply.
We could find corporate sponsors for a reality TV show where contestants try to best each
other in giving away most of their possessions.
We might sell tickets for a Grand Prize: one year guaranteed free of any stress of responsibil-
ity. Call it Blotto Lotto?
How about a web-based startup that helps people auction off their attention to advertisers?
Is any of this working for you? Am I anywhere close to the right track? I am sure sure that
together, we could put simple living at the front of societys eyeballs and make this a Big Deal
out there in the world.
So how big can you think about simple living?

Pastors Business Card
A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvi-
ous that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door.
Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote Revelation 3:20 on the back of it and
stuck it in the door.
When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been
returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, Genesis 3:10
Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter Revela-
tion 3:20 begins Behold, I stand at the door and knock. Genesis 3:10 reads, I heard your voice
in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.
Remember when the funniest jokes were the clean ones? They still are!
