GETHSEMANE 2014 SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER From our Pastor: Pr. Jeff Nehrbass Community in spades..... 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2 42-47 What an amazing party we had last Wednesday! A pig and a goat. Ribs and corn. Hamburgers and cake. And of course, cornbread and greens! Food enough for an army and the mountain of volunteers who served it up. And boy did we have an army! 500+ by anyone's reckoning. Neighbors from across the street and the blocks around our church. People whom we have gotten to know over the past few years. Folks who were strangers but now have become our friends. We shared everything with our neighbors, from the food to the company, the bouncy castle to the bags of produce. We broke bread together and ate together at the tables. We watched our children play basketball and smiled at how much they have grown this past year. Some of us even broke out our moves to some of the best blues and back-in-the-day music buffet! I was struck by three things on this wonderful evening and gathering. The first was that folks who had been visiting neighbors at last year's block party had become volunteers and leaders at it this year. What a treat and a blessing to see so many new faces engaging our community from within, serving up food and smiles. It made perfect sense for these neighbors to connect in a natural way in service with the community that grounds and identifies us! The second thing was to hear from our neighbors what a blessing the church had become for them. A spiritual home. A community of neighbors. A gathering of friends. A welcoming and safe space. An oasis of peace in the wasteland of violence in North Minneapolis this summer. The third thing was a sense of awe. Awe at how amazing God is. Awe at how God grows community. Awe at how simple and natural connections between God's people produce leadership, vision and service. Awe at the amazing giftedness and assets of our growing family of neighbors. And awe at witnessing joy in the hearts of all who felt called to serve, lead and walk along side this outpouring of God's spirit and love. Praise God for this community in spades!

Rally Day At Gethsemane - September 14 Tail Gate Breakfast

Rally means get together . . . work for something important . . . spread the news.

So, let’s do it. Let’s get together for a wonderful outdoor worship service with a wonderful breakfast served outside. It will be like we are camping, cooking over an open fire .... yes?

Breakfast from 8:30 - 9:30.... a little different than our usual Breakfast and A Bag Worship at 10:00. It's a combined worship with our Sister Congregation - NuWay.

Music, fresh air, good food, sign ups, drawings (must be present to win) and lots of excitement. Come casual. You might want to bring a lawn chair. Dress for the weather.

Wear something that indicates we are a team. Like the Vikings? Wear a sweatshirt. You're a Twins Fan - wear a T-shirt. We may even see a Green Bay Packers shirt. Yes, we have to let Pastor Jeff wear his beloved shirt.

Let’s work together to make this year the best ever! Let’s spread the news that God is present on the corner of 47th & Colfax in so many ways! There are so many incredibly wonderful things happening at Gethsemane. . . come on . . . let’s spread the news!!!!

Sign ups will be available for Sunday School and Confirmation maybe the GLCW will have some information. Kids will receive a surprise. Lots of different food served on Tail Gates. Youth will serve their "Tacos In A Bag". Jeff and Anne Johnson will serve Chili Cheese Dogs and John and Teresa Boyd will do pulled pork sandwiches. What will you serve? Don't have a tail gate? It's OK - we have some ones that are empty.

Sign up in the Narthex to help and to bring food. Questions? See anyone on the Council, Pastor Jeff or Roxi Mork. We need to set up the tent, tables and chairs. Oh yes, and then there is clean up. Everyone's favorite:) God will be there ! . . . . will you ?

Locking The Doors & Turning Off Lights When we are at the Church it is nice to have the doors open so people can come into this building. Sometimes people want to pray during the week and what better place than our Sanctuary. There are Bible Studies, activities and meetings. Those planning the meetings, Bible Studies, etc. are really good about making sure there is someone at the door to let people know where they are meeting. Sometimes there are deliveries or people with questions or people to work downstairs or in the Food Shelf. But, it isn't always possible to have the doors unlocked all the time. There is a buzzer now near the door by Pastor's office. You press the button and then let it go. Someone downstairs will either talk to you or come up and open the door. There are instructions on how to use it. Just like at home when we aren’t home, doors need to be locked. If you are the last one in the building or one of the last ones in the building . . . please check the doors to make sure they are secure. If you unlock a door . . . lock the door. If you open a door that does not have a lock on it, please close the door. When you turn on a light . . . turn the light off. Sounds like something our Moms said to us when we were growing up doesn't it? And it is certainly something we say to our kids. As happens every year with all the humidity during the summer, wood swells and makes it hard to close the office door. So, please pull the door shut and then try the doors to make

sure they are shut tight. The days are getting shorter now and it will get darker earlier so it will be much easier to see if lights are left on. But, please check before you leave the building

to make sure the light you turned on is now off.

Wednesday  Church  Nights  at  Gethsemane  Do  you  remember  when  just  about  everything  revolved  around  Church?    There  were  potlucks  all  the  time.    Wednesdays  were  "Church  Nite".    You  came  for  dinner  and  then  you  stayed  for  Confirmation,  classes,  Choir,  crocheting,  Bible  Studies,  groups  or  a  game  of  checkers.    We  have  found  that  on  Wednesday  nights  during  the  summer,  people  liked  to  "chat  over  the  backyard  fence",  eat  a  hot  dog  and  just  relax.    This

summer  we  also  distributed  food,  produce  and  bread.    We  will  do  our  Wednesday  nights  outside  on  the  10th  and  move  inside  on  the  17th.      We  were  inside  during  Winter/Spring  and  it  worked  well.    We  try  to  keep  the  same  schedule:

       6:00  -‐  6:30  pm  dinner  6:15  -‐  6:45  sign  in  for  food  distribution  6:30  -‐  7:15  Bible  Study  and  groups

7:15  pull  numbers  7:30  food  distribution

Do  you  like  to  cook?    It  would  be  wonderful  if  you  take  one  week  a  month  and  make  dinner.    It  does  not  have  to  be  hard  or  fancy.    We  make  the  menus  from  what  we  have  on  hand.    Sometimes  it's  pizza,  sometimes  it's  a  casserole,  sometimes  it  is  sandwiches...  Do  you  have  an  idea  for  a  group  ....there  is  some  talk  about  a  Grandparent  Group,  Rev.  McAfee  leads  a  very  popular  Bible  Study  and  we  would  like  to  have  someone  work  with  kids  during  that  45  minutes.    Sound  like  something  you  would  like  to  do?    To  volunteer  or  ask  a  questions  see  Roxi  Mork  or  Pastor  Jeff.

Have you ever wondered what is really needed at the Food Shelf? Besides people working? There are many kinds of products in the Food Shelf. We have everything from "soup to nuts".

There are many things that we can order from Second Harvest and there are things that we can "shop" for at Second Harvest. And there are many things that we can't find at Second Harvest for any number of reasons. They don't have it. It's too expensive. We have to purchase too much.

Thanks for your help. Please see Roxi Mork or Jean Bailey with questions or donations.
