Summer is a very busy time at the Food Bank. We continue to help a growing number of clients, but there are signifi-cantly fewer volunteers available because of the migration back to summer homes. Fortunately, we have great folks helping with the work schedules and even greater volun-teers with attitudes of “doing whatever it takes to help out.” We have also been fortunate to have a number of students volunteer. We are happy to have them, and thank them and their parents for their support over these past few months.

Our shelves are stocked in the summer with a combination of groceries donated from our local grocery stores, purchases made at food stores, and from discounted purchases from our partner St. Mary’s Food Bank. Our inven-tory shrinks during the summer because more food goes to clients and less is donated or purchased. We welcome the coming Fall when so many food drives are initiated, and our inventory increases with each passing week. Without food drives such as those illus-trated on pages 4 and 5, we would not be able to maintain our support to our grow-ing client base. October is a very important month to the Food Bank. A number of our volunteers return to the area, and key fundraising activities such as Empty Bowls are held. Learn more about these fun fundraising events on pages 6 and 7. Adopt-a-Family sign-up also starts in October, and we hope to have another successful year of giving during our holiday season. As you can see by the articles on the opposite page, we continue to look for ways to help our clients help themselves. The Food Bank is expanding both our Snack Pack and Resource and Education Advocacy programs, and introducing new programs to teach our clients how to grow produce and how to prepare for a successful job search. As always, should you have any suggestions to add to our services, please let us know. Thank you for helping us help others.

PS—We are still looking for a second van. Please call if you can help!

    Resource and Education Advocacy

    Expansion of Client Services

The Food Bank is embarking on an expansion of existing programs to include mentoring clients through the some-times difficult processes involved in moving forward. Forms that need filling out are often voluminous and over-whelming. Volunteers are now being sought to help cli-ents understand where to go and how to ask for things like disability assistance, insurance, or food stamps, or how to establish a working budget. We want to give our clients the support they need to make a better life for themselves and their families. If you can help, please contact the food bank at 480-488-1145 and volunteer to be a Mentor.

Greens ‘R’ Great Program Takes Root

The 3,000 families, seniors and individuals served by the Foothills Food Bank and Resources Center will soon be able to reap the benefits of having fresh, or-ganically grown and hand-picked produce.

Greens‘R’Great will be a two-branched program. The first branch, a unique garden structure adjacent to the food bank premises, cur-rently under construction, will be a place for the customer community to gather and help maintain the crops. The sec-ond branch will provide con-tainer plants that may be tak-en home, grown, and cared for by food bank clients. Both branches will be educational and focus on teaching gardening and nutrition basics through hands-on experience.

Assisting with moving Greens’R’Great forward are individuals and businesses that have stepped forward with generous donations of labor and materials, in-cluding: Cave Creek Building Supply, Elrod Fence Company, Fortezza Custom Homes, Home Depot, Larsen Excavation, Lowes, McKenzie Bros. Construc-tion, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Realty, Town of Cave Creek, Walmart, and the Greens’R’Great steering commit-tee. We thank these sponsors so much for helping our clients develop a sustainable source of healthy food. The program will be launched this Fall.

Snack Packs Feed Children on Weekends

It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? There are children who benefit from the free and reduced lunch program in our public schools, but who are left without enough food on days they don’t attend school. The Snack Pack program aims to provide preschool, grade school and high school children in the Cave Creek and Deer Valley Unified School Districts with food items to take home with them over the weekends. We need $5.06 per week per child to fund this, and we currently are helping 225 students per week for 40 weeks of school attendance. Can your business or community club help support this important program? Please call if you can help.

To honor her father, who died in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, Deborah Koebler and her two school-age children conduct-ed a food drive at the kids’ school at a parent-teacher event, as well as at several local businesses in Anthem. She has been doing a food drive each year in remembrance of her father. This year Deb-orah collected almost 600 pounds of food for Foot-hills Food Bank, as well as food for the food pantry at St. Rose Catholic Church in Anthem. Her kids actively participated in the drive and also partici-pated in delivering and weighing in the food at the Food Bank.

This year, Hilary Sohm, Assistant Director and teacher at the Quality Montessori Campus in Cave Creek, took a unique approach to conducting a food drive. Students in grades 1-3 conducted a food drive for the Foothills Food Bank, with over 300 students participating. To cap off their successful event and to take ad-vantage of their proximity to our facility in Cave Creek, the 28 students who were organizers of the drive, along with their parents and teachers, put their collection in Flexible Flyers and other wheeled vehi-cles and hauled them to the Food Bank in a wagon train procession. When everyone arrived, they lined up and each group pulled their wagons into the re-ceiving area to have their collection weighed.

    Wagons Ready to Roll

Food Bank volunteers were delighted to assist the children in the process. Once all the food was weighed in, the children were given a tour of the facility by Executive Director Pam DiPietro.

After the children took the tour and asked all of their questions, they hauled their empty wagons back to the school. ..job well done.

    Pam Gives a Tour

“Based on the feedback from the children and parents, having the children actively participate in the delivery of the food they collected and seeing how the food bank operates was a very meaningful and enriching ex-perience, “ Sohm indicated. “Everyone was even more excited and interested to have participated after com-pleting the process.” The drive was a great success, with 790 pounds of food donated to the Foothills Food Bank on behalf of the parents and students.
