STATE SCHOOLS’ SPECTACULAR
Last Saturday, students from our school joined with
approximately three thousand other performers in
the State Schools’ Spectacular. What a treat it was
for everyone! The performance was held at the
Hisense Area and the venue allowed singers,
dancers, gymnasts, orchestra, skippers and skaters
to show their talent to a huge audience of over ten
thousand people.
It is easy to see that this is the largest performing
arts event in Australia and to witness the enormous
talent that is in our government schools.
This unique opportunity to perform was greatly
appreciated by all the performers and staff. Special
“thank you” to Mrs Whiteoak and Mr Miet and to
those staff who helped in the preparation of the
students.
Thank you to parents for your invaluable
contribution in making the day possible.
It certainly was a “dream-come-true” for many of
our students.
It will be televised on 19th October at 3.00pm,
Channel 7.
PLEASE WATCH OVER OUR SCHOOL
DURING THE BREAK
If you see any incident that impacts on the safety
or wellbeing of staff, students or visitors in or
around schools, especially after school hours,
you can alert Emergency Management by
phoning 95896266 (24 hour service). Of course, if
what you see is criminal behaviour, call the
police on 000.
In order to keep our school secure it is incumbent
upon us all to be vigilant at all times. Unwanted
visitors to the school should be reported to the
police immediately. We employ the services of a
security company to patrol the school at night
however it is clear that this is not sufficient.
Please help us to keep our school safe from
vandalism. Report intruders to the police. No
one should be on the school property when the
school is not operating.
Thank you.
CLASS FORMATION
The process for student placement for 2015 is about
to commence. We aim to have well-balanced
classes of students that take into account each
student’s social, emotional and academic
development and friendship groups.
Class compositions are based on Level groupings
(Level One – Prep; Level Two – Grades One and
Two; Level Three – Grades Three and Four and
Level Four – Grades Five and Six.
We endeavour to make optimum use of prior
knowledge teachers, parents and others have of
each student prior to class placement.
This is a lengthy process and entails much
discussion and sharing of information between
staff.
If there is any information you consider important
for the school to be aware of, please put it in writing
and return to me before Monday 6th October.
There will be no class considerations after this
date.
GARDEN VIEWS
Hello! As warmth returns to our part of the earth,
we humans begin to want to go out of doors, away
from our shelters. We put on less clothing so as to
adjust to the sun's increasing warmth.
In older times before the importation and
refrigeration of food, people had their own cellars
which by springtime would be running out of food.
It was essential for people to plant seed as soon as
possible so that food would grow. In this setting
fasting was natural. Limited food reserves had to
stretch over more time. Fasting cools the body and
cleanses it, as do the first green leafy foods that
mother earth provides.( spring cleaning!)
When people moved away from small
farms into towns and cities the religious leaders
understood that food was more plentiful there and
eating was not restricted anymore by the wisdom of
the seasons. This is why lent was proclaimed as a
ritual in spring. When the sun returns to warm our
bodies we do not need to eat as much food as we do
in winter. However we can keep eating due to
refrigeration storage in supermarkets. This may
result in us making our bodies too hot resulting in
all kinds of fever; hayfever, springfever etc. By
suggesting that people fast during spring the church
leaders were trying to do what wise nature did
before technology and city living ie cool the body
down so that people would not become overrun by
hot headedness.
As modern humans we can judge all old
traditions as silly and therefore not worth our time
to investigate. These days we prefer that drug
companies give us pills to control the excess heat in
our bodies even though many have scary side
effects.
Nature works on the big idea, called
balance. We have hot and cold seasons, wet times
and dry times. Imagine a see saw, where a man and
a woman sit opposite one another. In the middle is a
vertical axis which is the balancing point. Perhaps
the task of existence is to walk the middle way
between the extremes and so not get caught in life’s
ups and downs. In commerce, there is a scales
which serves balance between the buyer and the
seller, a pound of flour for so much coin. In law,
there is a scales of justice where an offender's
action is weighed up against the wounds of another
by a judge who sits like the vertical axis in the
middle of the court room.
Perhaps it is for such deeper reasons that
even nursery rhymes say such things as “ Jack
Spratt could eat no fat and his wife could eat no
lean but together they licked the platter clean”.
Cheers Peter Le Ray
3/4C WRITING
Students in Level Three have been working on
adding suspense to their writing by choosing
highly descriptive language based around the
five senses. Here are some more examples of this
writing from students in 3/4 C.
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse
and it was only the start. I couldn’t see
anything but snow and could barely move.
The wind was howling. I was absolutely
terrified that it was the end. My mouth was
frozen and I could taste nothing but ice. I
was trying as hard as I could to move
around but my feet were sinking into the
snow. I couldn’t move my hands but then I
found a huge cave. I heard a growl. I saw
two red, glowing eyes and something was
coming right at me. I was doomed.
By Joel B
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse
and it was only the start. I could see snow
everywhere I went. I could hear a wolf
crying and howling. Then I saw eyes
looking at me from the bush and out jumped
a baby wolf. It jumped on me and licked me
on the face. When I got up the wolf
followed me. By Joey P
Wave by wave, the boat crashed into the
water. I could hear sirens, people were
screaming.
“What was all that?” I said to myself. I saw
light, I saw a life-boat, but part of me was
sad that I was finally being saved.
By Jacinta K
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse
and it was only the start. The sharp wind
went right through my jacket. It felt as
though I was an ice sculpture. All I could
see were the frosty trees going side to side. I
felt left out. By Belinda Y

DISTRICT ATHLETICS
On Wednesday 3rd September 2014, our amazing athletes participated in the Nunawading
District Athletics. We would like to commend our students on their excellent enthusiasm
and school spirit. The cheering could be heard from the BHPS crowd all around. The
competition was fierce and our students put in a brilliant effort. BHPS came 7th in
aggregate points and 6th in overall points. We would like to congratulate the following
students for achieving first or second place in their events and moving onto Division
Athletics. We wish them the best of luck as they move onto the next level of competition:
Ann J Long Jump and Hurdles
Mikayla W Shot Put
James F Discus
Samantha E High Jump
Jasmine L Hurdles
We would like to thank all of the teachers for everything they have done to help BHPS be
as successful as they are. You are certainly appreciated. The parents need an extra BIG
mention. With the amazing help of Robyn Bell, we were able to gather a small army of
parents who gave their support and helped out wherever they could on the day. A big
thank you to all of the parents who took the time out of their busy day to come and cheer
on our brave athletes. Without your help and support, the day would not have run as
smoothly and students would not have built such brilliant memories of this sporting event.
Thank you and we hope to see you at the next event!
KITCHEN NOTES
It is with great pride and delight that I report that
we (Burwood Heights Primary School) have had great
success in the Home Economics Victoria Recipe
Challenge competition. In our first year of entry,
some of our talented and creative Level Four students
won first and third prize in the Green Salad category.
Students had to add their own touches to a basic
green salad recipe in this state wide competition and Kateland Y and Corinne F
won first prize with their “Winter Salad”. Saurish S and Keiren M came third in
the state with their “Colourful Chicken Salad”.
I accompanied the prize winners to the award presentation at Werribee
Secondary College on Monday, where we met Shirley Cameron, one of the co-
authors of the classic Home Economics/Food Tech text book, “Cookery the
Australian Way”. She delighted us with her warmth, humour and entertaining tales
of cooking with students over the years.
With the holidays upon us, you may like to make the winning recipes with your
children and see what so impressed the judges in this competition
