After a challenging summer, we have now reached September, a time of excitement and new opportunities.
The forest fires that ravaged Saskatchewan’s north had a major impact on the area’s economy and as we hear more about the financial impact of those fires, we are reminded once again of the efforts of the volunteers, military personnel and government officials who worked continuously to provide food and shelter to evacuees, keep the lines of communication open and save as much property as possible. We remain grateful to those who stepped up to help when so many needed it.
Now, as he we head into fall, the Chamber is busy planning a host of local events to inform and engage our members. The first is our annual Raider luncheon, happening on Tuesday, September 15. Register online on or give us a call at 306-764-6222.
On September 24, the Chamber is planning a federal candidates’ forum to hear from our local political candidates. The federal election happens October 19.
The much-debated idea of another bridge for Prince Albert will be one of the topics on the agenda at the Building Bridges for Success conference October 7. This event will include engineers, planners, government representatives and business to discuss the various bridge models and learn more about the P3 process.
On October 29, the Chamber will install a new board of directors at our annual Chairman’s Night event. This year, our keynote speaker will be radio personality, Mr. John Gormley. Proudly presented by Affinity Insurance and Affinity Credit Union, the event will also feature a silent auction in support of scholarships for two students at Sas-katchewan Polytechnic. Mr. Mark Tweidt, city councilor and owner of Integrity Inspections in Prince Albert, will be the evening’s wine sponsor.
All these events, and much more, can be found on the Chamber website at www.princealbertchamber.com. We hope you can join us!

Chamber Hosts Member Appreciation Barbecue The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce hosted a member appreciation barbecue Thursday to recognize our members and celebrate the Chamber's 128th anniversary. It was a beautiful day and a large crowd came out to enjoy burgers, drinks and cake.
Thanks also go out to our members who helped with the event. The folks at Heat Smart Plus provided a barbecue for the member appreciation event. The new owners at Carlton Bakery, Cecilia and Marcelo De Antunano, provided the cake while Harold's Family Foods put together a tasty veggie/dip tray. The Prince Albert Co-op provided some fresh burgers and buns for the barbecue and the pop and water was donated by the Prince Albert Beverages division of the Tle’Nax T’awei Group. Tim Horton's coffee was also available. The member appreciation barbecue was a chance to thank our members, whose support make our work at the Chamber possible. We appreciate your commitment to the Chamber!

Back to School signals back to routine not just in our homes but workplaces as well.
Most of your employees have likely had their summer vacation and if you had temporary summer employees their employ-ment is over too! Have you ever had a safety meeting? When was the last time the fire extinguisher was serviced? Is the First Aid checked only when someone says you are out of Band-Aids? Is the muster point — ‘what the heck is that?’ — as someone might say, posted and everyone knows the location?
Every business, large and small should make safety a priority not because you are legislated to do it but because it makes good business sense. Consider the costs when just one employee is injured in a workplace incident. Sometimes safety takes a back burner to expansion plans, hiring of employees and general day to day operations.
But that’s where you can enlist the support of your employees. Get them involved to make the workplace safer, cleaner and easier to navigate. Listen to what they are saying and while not everything may be possible, sometimes the best ideas don’t come from the boss’s desk. Involving everyone towards a new goal gives people pride in their work and a great sense of ownership that they can lay claim to making the difference.
This spring, we at Parkland Ambulance Care became signatories to the Mission Zero Safety Charter. In part, the Charter says we will do our best to make safety an everyday part of our lives. Our Chamber of Commerce also signed on as the business representative to lead the way in making Prince Albert businesses safer and healthier workplaces.
When we all share in making our workplaces the extension of that carries through to our homes. First Aid skills learned on the job might aid your son’s hockey team that you coach or give you a bit more confidence when see a vehicle collision on the highway. Don’t just leave the hard hat and safety goggles at work nor forget the importance of reading the label before opening a can of glue for your home renovation project.
A few simple steps can, will and do make our communities safer.
Looking for some ideas? Want to share your ideas? Please feel free to give us a call.
If we don’t have the answer we likely know someone who does. We’d rather talk to you on the phone than have our paramedics show up at your workplace emergency.

By Sherry Buckler, Executive Director
It is my honour and privilege to be serving the Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) in my first full year as Executive Director!
Our foundation was born in 1985 when a small group of passionate individuals responded to the call from the provincial government for communities to provide 20% of hospital capital expenditures. The continual goal is to raise funds for medical equipment that needs to be upgraded or replaced for physicians and health care workers at the Prince Albert Parkland Health region (PAPHR) to perform at their optimal level. The foundation reaches a landmark year as we celebrate 30 years of supporting the PAPHR. The VHF continues to fulfill its mission of ‘bringing better health care closer to home.’
The VHF became a registered charity in 1985 and has grown with support from individuals, organizations, volunteers and businesses throughout Prince Albert and surrounding communities and northern Saskatchewan. It operates with a staff of three people, in a space of 650 square feet on the main floor of the Victoria hospital. It has a board of 15 community members who support the staff and goals of the VHF. We also have a 50-strong, and growing group of volunteers who give their time and skills when help is needed. Our organization financially supports itself and operates on less than 18 cents per dollar. This is a remarkable figure and demonstrates our commitment to being fiscally prudent while striving each year to purchase more and better equipment for our hospital.
Apart from generous support throughout the year from individuals who walk in, call or donate online, the VHF has raised funds through events big and small. This has included running a coffee shop, a diamond and denim gala, radio bingo programs, the annual Festival of Trees, and our prestigious OK Hjertaas Golf Classic, now in its 18th year. Our signature event each year is our Give A Little Life Day, which takes place each December and unites entire communities.
Since 1985, our Foundation has purchased over eight million dollars of vital equipment for the Victoria Regional Hospital.
Some of the highlights include:
An up-to-date, fully-equipped intensive care unit
An endoscopy suite
Updated equipment in the obstetrics and pediatric units, the eye clinic, imaging, operating and emergency rooms, our palliative care, chemotherapy and renal dialysis departments, cardiac rehab and just recently, the mental health unit.
Today, our Foundation is proud to report that we raise an average of 1.2 million dollars annually to improve, expand and upgrade our hospital benefitting our region and surrounding communities.
With the help of our passionate VHF staff, our strong Board, and our generous communities, we promise to continue to work hard to raise much-needed funds to improve and support the Victoria Regional Hospital and optimize the health care of Prince Albert and surrounding communities.
Happy 30th birthday Victoria Hospital Foundation! I am proud to be part of the fine and very important mission to ‘Bring Better Health Care Closer to Home!’
