A Reconciling in Christ Congregation

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? No. We are not there yet. But progress has been made! The Call Team has received names and is now researching the candi-dates. And that is all we get to know! So what are we doing in the meantime? Pr. Paul Bodin, interim pastor left at the end of May to take a permanent call. He intro-duced the idea of a Bridge Pastor or “the one (or ones) who come in between the Interim and the Permanent Pastor.” We were hopeful in May that our next interim phase would be brief but, alas, three months have passed and we have made some new interim plans. During our summer months we enjoyed many voices in the pulpit and experienced different kinds of worship. Thanks to all who preached, sang, planned, decorated, attended, supported with kind words and remained faithful to our congregation! Now that fall is upon us, the Governing Board is pleased to announce that we have hired a Sunday Morning Interim Bridge Pastor. Pr. Rick Mills is a recently retired Presbyterian pastor who lives in Lake Tahoe. He will be with us most Sunday mornings at 9am and 11am preaching and presiding for worship and will be a key part of some of our membership Sunday events coming up. He loves preaching and re-cently preached on August 16 at Good Shep-herd. Pr. Rick was referred to us by Pr. Scott, who is also Presbyterian. He begins August 30 and will most likely be with us until our perma-nent pastor arrives sometime later this year. Please introduce yourself to him at worship!

Many of you have already met Pr. Scott Trevithick who is serv-ing as our quarter time Mid-week Interim Bridge Pastor. He is in the office on Tuesdays and pro-vides pastoral care to all members of the congregation including hos-pital visits, funerals and pastoral counseling. He also works with the staff and Governing Board at their respective meetings and teaches Tuesday Bi-ble class. Pr. Scott preached at Sam Ebner’s funeral this past month. He is currently the half-time pastor at Truckee Lutheran Presbyterian Church in Lake Tahoe. His children, Grant and Claire, were con-firmed here at Good Shepherd. It is our plan that Pr. Scott will be with us until our permanent pastor is in place.

Cell: 775-247-2679

But what about 7:30am worship? Pr. Susan Taylor will be preaching and presiding at most 7:30am wor-ship services. Pr. Susan is a famil-iar face to Good Shepherd; she has preached many times here and calls Good Shepherd her church home. She will preach here at 7:30am and then drive to Fernley where she preaches many Sundays at Fernley Lutheran Church. She is also Presbyterian! Thank God for our three amazing Presbyterian Pastors Scott, Susan, and Rick who are taking care of Good Shepherd this Fall! We also thank God for our amazing lay Staff: Shaun, Maribeth, Kristin, Jennie, Andrea and Eric who continue to bend, mold, zig and zag and think outside the box during unique times! Please pray for us all! Peace, Deanna

Choir Returns September 13!

The choir returns to the 11am worship service beginning September 13. They have had a nice hiatus over the summer but it is time to get back into action! The choir rehearses Sunday mornings at 9:30am downstairs in the choir room. Jennie Tibben is the di-rector. New folks interested in joining are invited to a potluck and rehearsal on September 11.

ELW Hymnals for Worship Need “Adopting”

Our new hymnal, the cranberry ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) Hym-nal sits in front of most chairs in our worship space during the summer. But when the choir arrives, they are redistributed throughout and we end up a bit short! When we moved to this hymnal we decided to phase in their arrival. Now it is time for Phase 3! We have purchased the last 25 hymnals for our worship space. If you would like to adopt a hymnal for $25, you can write your name in the name-plate and donate it in honor of a loved one or a special occasion. These hymnals will be available beginning August 30 in the Welcoming Space. This hymnal has been widely ac-cepted. It contains not only many hymns but liturgy for 10 different wor-ship settings! Currently we use 5 of them and will debut another setting later this year. There are also prayers, psalms and many other resources in this amazing book!

A Special Hymnal . . .

Toni deSalvo, our long time member, friend and music colleague at Good Shepherd, died January 1 this year from complications of cancer. It is such a surprise and shock when someone leaves you suddenly; she had only been sick for a few months. I continually think that surely it was just a bad dream and Toni will storm through the office singing, copying, candy-seeking, pup-pies-in-tow and mischief-making! But it just is not happening . . .

This summer I met with Steve Hughes, long time partner of Toni’s. He had two boxes of Toni’s hymnals and wondered if I would like them. I was thrilled to be able to have a piece of Toni with me in my office. I quickly cleared shelves on my office book case but paused before I opened the boxes. I just was not ready yet. Two weeks ago, as I was seeking a hymn that I could not seem to find, I remembered those hymnals. So I opened the box, prayed for Toni’s guidance and unpacked the boxes onto my shelves. I found the hymn I needed!

. . . And I found a treasured gem. There amongst the old, old hymnals from every denomination was a bright and shiny new cranberry ELW Hymnal. It was gifted by Pr. Carl to Toni. Pr. Carl wrote:

To Toni - - a classy broad with great pipes and a fine sense of humor, - A valued partner in leading worship, - A companion in Christ! With much love, Carl

Tears rolled down my cheeks. Grief was mixed with and softened by laugh-ter. Toni was indeed a good gift to this world and I will treasure her spirit through these wonderful hymnals.

Women’s Retreat

Zephyr Point (Lake Tahoe) October 9-11, 2015

Zephyr Point Conference Center is holding its annual Women’s Retreat and Good Shepherd will be taking part! The Zephyr Point Women’s Retreat is a chance to get away with other women and experience the rest, relaxation, and recreation afforded by the majestic set-ting of Lake Tahoe. The theme of the retreat is “Preparation and Readi-ness” - how we make ready and how we are made ready for new seasons in our lives, new challenges, new callings, new relationships. This is a retreat pre-sented and led by the Presbyterian Zephyr Point Conference Center. We will join with other area women during the retreat and also have opportunities to spend one-on-one gathering time with the women of Good Shepherd. The retreat includes food (Friday dinner through Sun-day breakfast), lodging, and program supplies. The cost of the retreat is based on the accommodations you select: Economy* Accommodations (Cabin Occupancy – 4 people) $179/per person Deluxe** Accommodations (Double Occupancy) $229/per person Deluxe** Accommodations (Single Occupancy) $319/per person * Economy Accommodations are in Zephyr Point cab-ins. Each person will have her own twin bed, sheets and towels. **Deluxe Accommodations are in the Tal-lac Center (hotel rooms). Each room is furnished with two queen beds and has a private bathroom. Please note that these are per person costs, not the cost split between the number of people in the cabin or double occupancy rooms. For example, each per-son in a double occupancy room pays $229 each for a total room total of $458. This will be a beautiful time of year to spend a week-end at the lake! We hope you will treat yourself and sign up to attend. Place completed registration forms and payments in the Women’s Retreat registration box located on the Welcoming Space table by Sunday, September 13. For questions, contact Kristin Lessard at [email protected].

3rd Graders and "Learning the Language" Bible Retreat! In October, we will be holding our annual “Learning the Language” retreat, a gathering specifically for 3rd graders and families (also, older children who have never attended the retreat are welcome to attend.) It’s a two hour time of engagement where we will talk about what the Bible is and how families can share the Bible together, at home, and with the support of the Church. There are snacks, special guests, and good family time to talk about the Bible, the Church, and relationships with God. Time and date of the retreat are the outcome of a poll Shaun is sending to 3rd grade families, so contact Shaun for details of the best time/date. This Bible-focused retreat will serve as preparation for our annual Bible pres-entation on Sunday, October 25th, when we present a new Bible to each third grader in our congregation during Sunday worship. It is a gesture of hope-ful expectation that they will read and explore the Bible on their own as well as with family, friends and others. This is one way we as a congregation and you as parents fulfill the baptismal promise to “place in their hands the Holy Scrip-tures.” We look forward to this year’s Bible presentation and we anticipate a meaning-ful time together at our Bible retreat. We hope you will make every effort to join us for “Learning the Language.” We are proud to partner with you in the faith formation of your beloved 3rd grader.

Orientation to Orientation to Orientation to Orientation to Good ShepherdGood ShepherdGood ShepherdGood Shepherd

We will soon be holding three Orientation to Good Shepherd sessions on Sunday, September 20, Sep-tember 27 and October 4 from 12:30-3:30pm in Shepherd Hall with the aim of welcoming newcomers or prospective members. Lunch and childcare will be provided. Even though we are in an interim period in the life of our congregation, our Good Shepherd min-istries and members are active and thriving and con-tinuing the important work that takes place in and out-side our walls. Come learn what it means to be a Lu-theran and a member of Good Shepherd, a commu-nity of caring believers. To take part, sign-up in the Welcoming Space or RSVP to Kristin Lessard at [email protected] by Sunday, Sept. 13.

Goodbye and Thank You Patzy! Dear Good Shepherd Families, This is not easy for me to say but my days as a staff person at Good Shep-herd are numbered. I was recently offered a position as an intervention teacher at Smithridge Ele-mentary School. I would be working with students who require extra one on one instruction and help with their English. As many of you know I am finishing up my degree at the University of Nevada Reno in Elemen-tary Education with an emphasis in English as a Sec-ond Language. I could not say no to the offer but that means I have to say goodbye to Good Shepherd. These past four years working at Good Shepherd have been wonderful. I truly enjoyed all the deep dis-cussions, the laughs, and believe it or not even the tantrums. My experience at Good Shepherd has given me so many tools that I will take into my teaching ca-reer. God has truly blessed me by allowing to work at Good Shepherd but it is time for me to go. Thank you for all the love and support you all have given me and my family. Love, Patzy Martinez Perez

New MOMS’ Group at Good Shepherd!

This year, our twice-a-month Wednesday morning “Mothers of Preschoolers” group transitions into a new Moms’ Group. These gatherings are designed for mothers with kids in pre-school or elementary, and really all moms are welcome! Meeting times:

• 1st Tuesday of the month from 9:15-11:30am

• 3rd Tuesday of the month from 5:30-7:30pm both with childcare for those that RSVP The first meeting is Tues., September 15, 5:30-7:30pm. There's food (potluck brunch or snacks) and then either devotion/sharing time, a guest speaker/topic discussion, a craft project and lots of support and encouragement! This group is not limited to Good Shepherd or Lutheran women! Anyone is invited and encouraged to check it out. The costs are decided together by the group and are used to pay for crafts or other activities. Volunteers look after the children during these times, and these leaders who care for the chil-dren and mentor moms are always needed, so if you don't have young children, consider participating in these ways. Spread the word to mothers you know! Info is on our web-site, under programs. Questions can go to:

• Coordinator of the Moms’ Group: Carrie Maudin [email protected] • Coordinator of volunteers to watch kiddos: Becky Erdmann [email protected] Or, contact the church offices and talk with Shaun. Blessings on this group on their new beginning!

A “TLC” Volunteer Opportunity for the new Moms’ Group

The new Good Shepherd Moms’ Group, formerly known as MOPS, has new dates and times: first Tuesday of the month from 9:00-11:30am, and third Tuesday of the month from 5:30-7:30pm. The first meeting is September 15 at 5:30pm. We will continue to provide child care while the moms meet. Whether you can be a regular volunteer, an occasional, or a one-time volunteer, all positions are a blessing. If you are interested, please contact Becky Erd-mann at 329-3835 or [email protected].

Making a Difference as the Body of ChristMaking a Difference as the Body of ChristMaking a Difference as the Body of ChristMaking a Difference as the Body of Christ By Kristin Lessard Programs Coordinator

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:27 The new school year started a few weeks ago, and with it, the return of a busy family life filled with school, homework, sports, extracurricular activities and LOTS of driving. As the mother of two boys, ages 11 and 15, I have always tried to be the best mom I can be by taking care of their many needs. I often wonder if I am doing my kids a disservice though by doing too much for them. Yes, they help around the house with chores, but I often feel like I should ask and expect them to do more. They are going to be living on their own one day and will be responsible for their own cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping and other household tasks. Am I doing enough to teach them these life skills and responsibilities, and in turn, challenging them to grow to their fullest potential as functioning, healthy, independent adults? This parenting thing is definitely not for the faint of heart! As the Programs Coordinator at Good Shepherd, I struggle with some of these same feelings. I want to do the best work I can for the church, but sometimes I wonder if I might be doing too much, par-ticularly in the area of Social Ministry work. To preface this, I must say that I am c o n t i n u a l l y overwhelmed

by the generosity of our church members who give so abundantly to donation drives and other requests of need. Good Shepherd is also blessed with a number of dedicated volunteers who share their time and talents in ministry groups such as the Hearts and Hands Quilters, Meals Ministry, Good Grief and Shared Harvest. Their kind-ness and care make a difference in the lives of many people in our church, our community and our world. At various times in the church’s his-tory, Good Shepherd has also had a Social Ministry team, a group that helped organize church-wide ser-vice efforts and collection drives, among other things. At the time I started working as the Programs Coordinator at Good Shepherd, this team wasn’t as active as it had been in years past. In the life of a church, there is a natural ebb and flow of programs, groups and minis-

tries. Seeing a need, I suggested that I take on this role as part of my new staff position. I have a passion for this type of work and have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to organize a variety of service projects and donation drives includ-ing Project Homeless Connect, Operation S toc k i n g S t u f f e r , Lenten collections, river clean-ups, a homeless shelter party, and a BIG day of service on the original “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday

two years ago. I am proud of what our church has done and the many people we have helped and served through our giving and our efforts these past few years. As we approach the third anniver-sary of “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday, I am now starting to rethink our current way of doing things though and am envisioning some new possibilities. God has blessed each and every one of us with unique talents and passions. He has created us to live and love in community. He wants us to work together, sharing our talents and serving and caring for one another as one body. With our current staff-led approach to Social Ministry work, I feel like we are not utilizing all the strengths and talents in our congregation to the fullest. Can you imagine how much more we could accomplish with a diverse group of people working together, sharing their collective ideas, pas-sions, time and gifts? While I have always tried to do my “best” in this position, I think Good Shepherd actually needs a Programs Coordi-

For those who have asked, we will be placing another order for purple “God’s Work, Our Hands” t-shirts next month. Over the past few years, we have worn these t-shirts at countless church sponsored events and service projects including Project Homeless Connect, river clean-ups, Aces games, the Pride Parade and most recently at the National Youth Gathering in Detroit. These are t-shirts that we wear proudly and that identify us as a church community! If you have missed your chance the last two times we placed an order, don’t delay! It will be awhile before we place another order. T-shirts are $12 each. Order forms can be found on the Welcoming Space table. T-shirts must be pre-ordered and paid for by Sunday, October 11. nator who is striving to do less in this area of Social Ministry, because to-gether, we can do more…so much MORE. On Sunday, September 13th we will observe “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday. The ELCA established this Sunday of service two years ago in celebration of its 25th Anniversary and has continued the yearly observance. This year, Mark Scandrette will be visit-ing and preaching on “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday, which does feel like God timing! Mark is a person who lives and breathes the principals of serving others in his daily life and mission. Hearing his message will hopefully in-spire us all to serve more frequently and fervently! On God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday, I encourage you to reflect on your own gifts and passions, to envision the possibilities for even greater out-reach and service at Good Shepherd, and to consider joining the new “Make a Difference Team” (which also needs a leader!) Also, remember to wear your purple “God’s Work, Our Hands” t-shirts to church on Sunday, Septem-ber 13th (and if you don’t have a church t-shirt, you can stop by the Welcoming Space table and order one to wear next time!)

Elise Antonia deSalvo Elise Antonia deSalvo Elise Antonia deSalvo Elise Antonia deSalvo Memorial Scholarship in Vocal MusicMemorial Scholarship in Vocal MusicMemorial Scholarship in Vocal MusicMemorial Scholarship in Vocal Music

A Message from Pastor Scott Trevithick: Periods of change are always challenging and pastoral transi-tions in a church may be particularly so given the significant relationship of trust between a congregation and its pastor. The Good Shepherd staff is an experienced, competent and caring group of people and has exercised good leadership dur-ing this time. At the same time, the stressors that many mem-bers may be experiencing are felt even more strongly by staff members who are impacted by those changes on a daily ba-sis. With a recent death in the congregation and a number of recent cancer diagnoses along with a generally increased staff load, I’m sure members of the staff would appreciate your prayers and expressions of support.

We are pleased to announce that Good Shepherd has partnered with the University of Reno Founda-tion to establish a Vocal Music scholarship endow-ment in memory of Toni deSalvo, beloved member and staff member of our congregation. Thanks to your generous gifts, and a large gift from Toni’s fam-ily, the scholarship will now be endowed and live on at UNR. The daughter of Fred and Doris de Salvo (Thompson) Elise Antonia “Toni” was born May 7, 1946, in Reno, Nevada. Toni attended McKinley Park Elementary, Central Junior High, and graduated from Reno High School in 1964. She continued her education at the University of Nevada, Reno for two years, then moved to San Francisco where she earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees from San Francisco State University. Toni received the William E. Zech Memorial Award "Outstanding Graduate in Music." While living in San Francisco, Toni was a professional member of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. She appeared as a featured soloist with the Symphony Chorus, as well as with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, Pocket Opera, the Coro Hispano de San Francisco, and numerous Bay area chamber ensembles. Returning to Reno, Toni shared her love of singing, opera, handbells, and choral music by per-forming with the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Chamber Orchestra, Nevada Opera, TOCCATA, and P'Opera. She also performed with Ravens and Roses, the Spirit Singers, and Great Basin Carolers. Two memorable performances were her roles in the 2009 Nevada Op-era production of LaBoheme and the 2004 Turandot where she tested the sharpness of the executioner's sword, improvising a quick taste of blood from her finger before performing a high C-sharp shriek! The comic improvisation that sprung from her sense of humor was an inte-

gral part of Toni's personality and joie de vivre, endearing her to audi-ences and colleagues alike. Toni's final performance was with P'Opera on December 14th, 2014 and oh how she shined! Toni felt a calling to perform and lead music for worship. She was the Handbell Choir Director at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Reno, a Cantor at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral, and recently Choir Director of Spanish Springs Presbyterian Church. In her private voice studio she taught musical artistry, coached students for auditions and

performances, and mentored many young voices. Students, colleagues, friends and family will always remember her kindness, warmth, and the depth of her caring. Toni also shared her gifts through the chil-dren's programs of the Assistance League of Reno-Sparks; she especially enjoyed her role as a puppet-eer for Kids on the Block. She helped to organize the Nevada Interfaith Governor's Breakfast for many years.

To allow Toni's beautiful spirit to con-tinue to bless this community, a vocal musical scholarship has been estab-lished at the University of Nevada, Reno. Gifts may be given to this fund via Good

Shepherd or directly through UNR by sending your gift to:

UNR Foundation Morrill Hall/162

Dearest Toni—we will forever feel your presence and love you always.

7 Things Church 7 Things Church 7 Things Church 7 Things Church Members Should Members Should Members Should Members Should Say to Guests in a Say to Guests in a Say to Guests in a Say to Guests in a Worship ServiceWorship ServiceWorship ServiceWorship Service

by Thom S. Rainer, thomrainer.com

1. “Thank you for being here.” It’s just that basic. I have heard from numerous church guests who returned because they were sim-ply told “thank you.” 2. “Let me help you with that.” If you see someone struggling with umbrellas, young children, diaper bags, purses, and other items, a gesture to hold something for them is a huge positive. Of course, this comment is appropri-ate for member to member as well. 3. “Please take my seat.” I actually heard that comment twice in a church where I was speaking in the Nashville area. The first comment came from a member to a young fam-ily of five who were trying to find a place to sit to-gether. 4. “Here is my email address. Please let me know if I can help in any way.” Of course, this comment must be used with discre-tion, but it can be a hugely positive message to a guest. 5. “Can I show you where you need to go?” Even in smaller churches, guests will not know where to find the nursery, restrooms, and small group meeting areas. You can usually tell when a guest does not know where he or she is to go. 6. “Let me introduce you to ____________.” The return rate of guests is always higher if they meet other people. A church member may have the opportunity to introduce the guest to the pastor, other church staff, and other members of the church. 7. “Would you join us for lunch?” I saved this question for last for two reasons. First, the situation must obviously be appropriate before you offer the invitation. Second, I have seen this approach have the highest guest return rate of any one factor. What if your church members sought to invite differ-ent guests 6 to 12 times a year? The burden would not be great, but the impact would be huge.

Acts of Courage By Lynnae Hornbarger

I ended up with a “friend” on Facebook I didn’t know – turns out we have one mutual friend so that must be how we connected. As I followed

Daniel’s posts, it became clear that he had cancer. He was always upbeat, posting photos of his family and friends, and very inspirational sayings. That was what got me hooked, and I looked forward to his spiritual posts. He kept us up-dated on his treatments, but this spring let us know that there was nothing more that could be done. His posts became more frequent, more positive and more spiritual – photos more family oriented. I shared many of his quotes with those in my family who needed them most. Daniel was my supplier of inspirational messages, and they couldn’t have arrived at a better time. In May, I realized I had seen nothing from him for about a week. That day, we read that Daniel had passed away. I include this story because his attitude had such a profound effect on me. His courage moved me coming from such a young man – mid 40’s – who his friend described as a party animal. He selflessly shared his spirituality. I was blessed to “know” him. I miss the messages. My second example is someone I’ve known her whole life. Cyrena found herself pregnant at 16, and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl - a baby girl that had many serious health issues that would prevent her from developing, growing and thriving. Not a situation that many 16 year olds would be able to handle. But, with the help of her supportive family, that’s just exactly what Cyrena did – she dealt with it all with grace, love and compassion. She found joy in every simple bit of progress Aiyana made - every smile and laugh, every new sound or movement. Nothing was too small to be celebrated. Cyrena even moved them to Southern California to go to school and better herself. And she dealt with it all. In May, Aiyana died suddenly in her mother’s arms at age 5. Pastor Paul conducted a very lovely memorial service, but still one of the hardest I’ve ever attended. Cyrena, still in shock and ob-viously beyond grief-stricken, stood up in that service and spoke about her beautiful daughter and what joy she had brought to her entire family. The love that she felt was palpa-ble as was the grief, but she was able to share these stories with us. Later at the cemetery, I watched Cyrena say good-bye to her beloved child as the tiny pink casket was lowered into the grave while Pastor Paul had just the right words for all of us – that moving moment etched in my brain for all time, so I can’t even imagine how Cyrena got through it. This young woman’s journey from child herself to amazing mother of a special needs child, her courage in being able to stand up and speak during her child’s memorial service, and the love she showed, indicated so much courage. What she’s done in her short 21 years of life is amazing. I’m impressed and awed. God gave Daniel and Cyrena opportunities to wallow, and they instead chose courage. Could I have done it? Don’t think so. Maybe . . .

Advocating for OurselvesAdvocating for OurselvesAdvocating for OurselvesAdvocating for Ourselves

By Sheila Freed I recently attended a memorial service, and included in the liturgy was a prayer which said, in part, “Help us to live as those who

are prepared to die. And when our days here are ended, enable us to die as those who go forth to live, so that living or dying, our life may be in Jesus Christ our risen Lord. Amen. ” A couple of days later I caught a news story with the head-line, “End-of-Life Planning Would Be Covered in Medicare Proposal.” Many of us have talked to our families about our wishes for our final days. How-ever many families have been frustrated to see a loved one receive care contrary to the loved one’s wishes, because health care providers take so seriously their pledge to “do no harm.” Even more patients and families have felt frustrated because they are making decisions with inadequate in-formation. It is often difficult to get a doctor to take time to explain the medi-cal realities and related choices. What is new in this Medicare proposal is that Medicare will pay a doc-tor to have such conversations. A “planning visit” will be covered just like any other doctor visit. This change is one of many tweaks to Medi-care regulations that will go into effect in 2016. Public comments are in-vited until September 8, 2015, and instructions to do so are online. The ELCA Social Statement “Caring for Health: Our Shared En-deavor” has been around for twelve years. It cautions against making health an idol by denying our own mortality. Here is an excerpt:

“The patient, family and health care providers need to make thoughtful decisions that serve the patient’s goals and well-being and that take seriously the limits of health care resources. . . . Adults and families do well to prepare for future health care choices they may need to make, especially regarding end-of-life care or in situations when they are no longer able to speak for themselves. Conversations with loved ones and health care pro-fessionals about wishes and values, along with the use of ad-vance directives, help others respect a person’s desires and mini-mize the tremendous stress and suffering that later treatment de-cisions may entail.”

In 2007 the Nevada Legislature created the “Living Will Lockbox.” This is a secure website run by the Nevada Secretary of State. People can store either their advance directives or a record of where those documents are located, such as at home, with a relative or attorney. A wallet card is issued with a number that can be used to access the lock-box. So even if family is not available to express one’s wishes, health care providers can find out what they are. Access could be especially helpful for someone who travels or is otherwise separated from loved ones. Full de-tails including the forms to use are available at www.livingwilllockbox.com. The Medicare change and the Living Will Lockbox make it easy for all of us to address our own mortality in a way that the church has been urging us to do. We who do advocacy supported the 2007 Legislature in creating the Lockbox. Lutheran-Episcopal Advocacy in Nevada will continue to work for progress in all aspects of health care, and we invite your par-ticipation.

Rides Ministry We Need Drivers (and a leader!)

Every now and then we have a member of our con-gregation going through health issues who needs rides to and from medical treatments. We would like to create a “rides ministry” (much like our meals ministry) to help such members. If you are inter-ested in being notified when a need arises, please contact Maribeth Doerr at the church office (329-0696 or [email protected]). We also need a leader for this ministry. If this is something you feel called to do, GOD BLESS YOU! Call or email Maribeth for more information.

Coffee Hours at Good Shepherd!

We do love our coffee, sweet treats and sweet creams! Thank you to all who have signed up to bring treats for a particular or have dropped some change into the weekly basket for our coffee hours. Some of you have even made larger anonymous donations to this fund in memory of loved ones who especially liked their coffee time! What this says to me is that our congregation loves this aspect of our life together! We will ensure that we are supplied with goodies on the Sundays where no one has signed up.

Member Care

By Maribeth Doerr Pastoral Care Assistant

At times we all need comfort or just a listening ear. In addition, I believe we all want to help others. As mem-bers of Messiah, I need your help. When you hear of a friend or fellow congregational member who is in need or in the hospital, please take the initiative and reach out to them. Give them a call or visit them. Also, please en-courage them if they need or want a pastoral visit to call the church office or Maribeth Doerr, Pastoral Care As-sistant, at 329-0696. Because of confidentiality is-sues third party requests are extremely problematic. We must hear from the individual themselves or an im-mediate family member. Sometimes people or families want their privacy, so as caring people we want to re-spect that privacy. Thank you for your caring hearts, understanding, and cooperation in our ministry together. We ask for your prayers for the following members:

• A new baby!! Lucy James Robertson, born July 24 to Monica and Colin Robertson

• Our pregnant families: Erin & Adam Anderson and Katie & Joe Reynolds

• Our college students: See page 10 for a list • Our deployed member: Kevin Walen • Our members struggling with health issues:

Lynn Brosy, Don Waite, Robert Morrison, Lynn McLellan, Craig Summerhill, Dawnn Flores, Linda Fearnley, Paul Campbell, Jackie Parry and Jessie Wallace.

• Our homebound members: Nancy Boxill, Pauline Hobron, Terry Journey, Marilyn McHugh, Bea Myers, Gene Montrose, Elaine Nelson, Margaret Smith, and Betty Storm.

• Our members in hospice: Augie Kaufmann, Jane Campbell, and Lois Larsen.
