Dear members,

How fortunate that soon after a relaxing or an animated Lebaran holiday, we set off on another jaunt to Palembang in mid July! Such is the life of the busy WIC member! Our visit to this fascinating city allowed us to experience some of the richness and colour of the Province that was exhibited at the opening day of our Bazaar 2016. Our trip was marked with a spectacular evening at the official residence of the Governor of South Sumatera, hosted by Ibu Eliza Noerdin; city tours and stops at historic attractions; a memorable visit to the streamlined stadium that will host the 2018 Asian Games; shopping splendor and culinary delights.

Our Lebaran Celebration theme wove together the perspectives of nature and the human rendition of different art forms. “West Java Escape” was encapsulated in the dynamic performances of a Sundanese percussion group, a graceful peacock dance and the soulful singing of the renowned Sam Bimbo from the Bimbo musical group.

Thanks to our gracious Honorary Member Madam Lenise, we were feted with a Brazilian Cultural Morning, one that took us on a virtual tour of a country many people dream of visiting. Besides the much acclaimed verdant rainforests, the mighty Amazon and sandy beaches; the glorious images of festas and carnavals; the rhythm of the samba; we learned about the other lesser known facets that altogether make Brazil so captivating.

Reverence, pride and fun were fuelled through our Independence Day Celebration, as we sang our National Anthem with devotion, were entertained with patriotic songs by our Scholarship Students, presented with a war dance from North Sulawesi and regaled with expressive and

energetic singing from the Keroncong group that drew crowds on to the dance floor. For this last item, we extend our thanks to the Department of Tourism and Culture of DKI province.

In conjunction with this was our Bake Sale which was an overwhelming success. The enticing cakes, pastries and snacks, displayed in a red and white decorative theme in keeping with the event we were celebrating, were a visual delight, and the members made a clean sweep of every item on the table.

Watch out for our cool chef, Mina Northcott! After a fascinating International cooking class which had us patting out dainty and delectable sushi, she was back with the promise of piquant Filipino dishes. And she did indeed deliver!

The Epicurean ladies savoured their monthly lunch out, this time at the relatively new and rocking Samsara Restaurant.

Back by popular demand, the Decoupage circle led by Ruby had its loyal members creating artistic and functional items.

A very heart warming and special milestone was the installation of the WIC sponsorship plaque at the entryway of Karya Mandiri, a Social Welfare Institution that we support. With the addition of funds from our national patron, Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo to our own Outside Donation funds, our Social Welfare ladies were able to organize a renovation of the Institution’s main hall and classrooms, and the result was an airy, clean and safe environment for the children. The joy the children and their parents demonstrated on the installation day was the ultimate proof of the wonderful outcome.

Greetings! I am your new Liaison Officer. My name is Karin Sukarya, and some of you might remember me from my textile talks. I am German, married to a Balinese and have been living in Indonesia for 34 years. Apart from German I speak English, French and Indonesian.

One of my duties is to call you and remind you of overdue monthly fees.

If you look into the September 2017 edition of the bulletin, there is one full page of "overdue payments". Ladies you can do the calculation - the unpaid fees add up to an astronomical amount.

This is way too much.

Please consider that WIC has monthly expenses like every business: Salaries for employees, electricity, phone bills, postage, cleaning, water, food and beverages for meetings, printing of photos and brochures, printing of the monthly full color magazine and more.

With the Lebaran Holidays over, we have resumed work and started the engine in full speed towards our road to the Grand 50th WIC Annual Charity Bazaar.

Official letters to possible donors and sponsors have also been delivered and we remain positive towards a fruitful outcome. We would like to reiterate that we will need each and everyone’s full support to acquire various forms of assistance in order to achieve a successful event.

For apparent reasons in manifesting the Bazaar, we have started the process of approaching several provinces and the Ministry of Tourism.

With this collaboration, we are certainly hoping to create a rousing event for everyone.

As of this date, we have 39 confirmed participating embassies and we are very hopeful about attaining the same number as last year’s bazaar. The Second Embassy Meeting is scheduled to be on Thursday, 31 August 2017.

For more updates on the forthcoming Bazaar preparation:

1. We created a “WIC Jakarta” page on Facebook and along with “wicjakarta” ( #wicjakarta ) on Instagram, we aim to promote WIC activities, WIC Shop and WIC Bazaar. We encourage each and every WIC member to support us by activating your social media which in turn will endorse WIC’s publicity.

2. We have liaised with our WIC Public Relations Officer and have sorted a time plan/schedule to contact several media platforms to get a chance to promote our bazaar including a publication schedule and materials

to advocate and boost advertising the bazaar regularly via social media, newspaper and electronic media.

3. We have a few interested parties for our Cultural Program already which in due time will be assigned their specific time slots for the Opening Ceremony and Public Day.

4. The main list for the First Opening Ceremony invitations are now being checked and reviewed.

The Next Ways & Means meetings will be on Monday, 04 & 18 September 2017. Starting September, we will have meetings every 2 weeks to further discuss and assimilate all details pertaining to our Annual Charity Bazaar.

Dear Anita, We have been married for 20 years. In recent months, my husband has been very moody. Some days he is very kind and thoughtful, and on other days he is very irritable and criticizes me constantly. I don’t know what to do. I love him very much but he’s driving me crazy. I don’t know what to expect from him on any given day and it’s upsetting me very much. Please tell me what I should do!

Dear Member,It must be stressful and frustrating for you not to know what to expect next from your husband! First of all, reassure yourself that the problem is not you. Secondly, remember, communication is vital to a good relationship, therefore it is very important for you to talk to him honestly and express your concerns. He may not be aware of how he has been acting toward you. When you talk to him be careful: don’t attack, be a good listener and show your concern. He may be experiencing health problems, work issues, financial concerns or other matters which he is not disclosing to you. Let’s start with that and see how you go. Hopefully through your conversation you will understand what is going on. Good luck!

Anita Mulani is a past member of the WIC. She is a counselor at Essence Counselling in Perth, Australia. She works with women on numerous issues such as grief, anxiety, depression, cultural adaptation and relationship problems. She also conducts individualized self-care workshops for people experiencing burn out either in their professional or personal lives. Being a Brazilian in Indonesia can be quite an interesting experience, full of challenges and surprises, in which differences and similarities harmonically mingle and arise curiosity.

In fact, Brazil and Indonesia have a lot more things in common than one can imagine, such as political convergent evolutions; geographical similarities,

based on big territories with important biodiversity; large and multiethnic populations; and the challenge of overcoming inequalities.

Indonesia represents Southeast Asia’s largest economy, while Brazil is South

America’s largest economy. Together, the countries combine a population of almost 500 million people. Brazil is home to the largest rainforest in the world. Indonesia is home to the 3rd biggest one. The countries are also part of the G20 and have been playing a growing role in the most important international decision-making processes.

In Brazil people say mesa, in Indonesia, meja. In Brazil it is janela, in Indonesia jendela. Bola is bola, sapato is sepatu, camisa is kemeja, igreja is gereja and so on. Both populations are the result of a great mixture of ethnicities and famous for being gentle, kind, receptive, and always smiling.

In spite of all those similarities, however, Brazil is still mostly associated with classic stereotypes such as soccer, beaches, carnival and samba, which reflect only a small portion of its reality. Brazil is a lot more than that, and I am pleased to share with you a little bit of my country in the next lines. Only one more thing before I start: the capital of Brazil is Brasilia, not Rio de Janeiro, as many people believe.

History and the Brazilian people

Brazil was included in the world map during the great European explorations in the late 15th century, led by Portugal and Spain. When Europeans first reached the coast of Brazil, in 1500, the country was home to about 10 million indigenous people, or Amerindians.

Portugal established a colonial system in Brazil from 1500 to 1822, in order to explore sugarcane plantations along the coast, as well as gold and diamonds in the inland. Soon, people from West Africa were brought to Brazil to work as slaves, resulting in a mixture between indigenous, European and Africans, a characteristic of the Brazilian society still in the current days.

Starting in the 19th century, waves of immigrants from Europe, the Middle East, and even Japan added to this mix. This diversity of cultures has created a rich religious, musical, and culinary culture.

In 1822, Brazil became a sovereign nation. In 1888, slavery was abolished and, in 1889, the Federative Republic of Brazil was created. From then on, in spite of brief periods of dictatorship, Brazil has become one of the biggest democracies in the world, with legitimate and regular elections to the parliament and to the Heads of State.

Brazilian economy and social development

There is a reason Brazil is forecast to become the fifth-largest economy on the planet by 2050. It’s because Brazil is a highly diversified economy and one of the largest consumer markets in the world, with a highly productive agriculture sector, a broad and sophisticated industrial base, the largest stock market in Latin America and abundant natural resources, including energy.

Even though Brazil has been going through a period of economic instability, the Country has promoted extremely important developments in the last 2 decades,

mostly related to poverty reduction, hunger eradication, construction of new infrastructure, stabilization of its economy and institutions and the growth of its medium class, and, as a consequence, of its consumer market. Indeed, more than 40 million people entered the medium class in Brazil in only 10 years, one of the most expressive social developments ever registered.

Religion

Brazil is the biggest Catholic country in the world, but has always been known for its tolerance in relation to other religions. The Muslim community is still small, and there is a significant growth of christian-protestant and evangelic movements.

During the slave trade period, even though the Africans were baptized on their arrival and forced to follow the catholic religion, in the majority of times, the conversion did not really occur, and the Africans religions continued being practiced in secret. Gastronomy

For over 500 years, Brazilian gastronomy has been a large mixture of traditions and ingredients introduced not only by the indigenous native population, but also by the Africans and other immigrants. The discovery of Brazil itself has a connection with gastronomy, considering the Portuguese caravels accidentally landed

there in 1500, on their way to India and its spices. Due to the differences in climate, landform, types of soil and vegetation, and various people inhabiting the same region, it is difficult to establish a typical Brazilian dish. The most

famous ones, however, are: Brazilian churrasco (barbecue), pão-de-queijo (cheese bread), moqueca (fish soup), feijoada (black beans and meat) and the well-known drink caipirinha (a drink made with a spirit called cachaça, lemon and sugarcane).

The African presence is outstanding and fundamental on Brazilian gastronomy, with dishes such as the vatapá, acarajé, caruru, mungunzá, sarapatel, baba de moça, cocada, coconut candy, and many others. Rice and beans, which preparation varies according to the region, can be considered a national unanimity.

Music

Brazilian music encompasses various regional musical styles, again influenced by African, European and Indigenous forms, which resulted in some unique original styles, such as samba, bossa nova, MPB, pagode, lambada, forró, sertanejo, chorinho, maracatu, frevo and axé music, to name just a few.

Samba has become the best known form of Brazilian music worldwide, especially because of the country’s carnival, although bossa nova, which had Antônio Carlos Jobim as one of its most acclaimed composers and performers, have received much attention abroad since the 1950s.

Instrumental music is also largely practiced in Brazil, with styles ranging from classical to popular and jazz influenced forms. Among the later, Pixinguinha, Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti are significant figures. Notable classical composers include Heitor Villa-Lobos and Carlos Gomes.

Tourism

A lot more than soccer, samba and carnival, Brazil is also history, business, culture and nature. Indeed, the country has the greatest variety of animals and plants of any country in the world.

The Country is also famous for its beaches, waterfalls and plateaus, which makes it an excellent option for ecotourism. Due to its economic leadership in the regions, it is also home to the most important fairs and exhibitions in Latin America, which attract a significant amount of entrepreneurs and businessman to the Country. In addition to that, more and more people visit Brazil in search of its world-class gemstones, which varies from aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, diamond, emerald, quartz, ruby, sapphire, topaz, and many more.

If in the Northern part of the Brazil sits the Amazon jungle, in its central-western part lays a flat, swampy area called the Pantanal. For those interested in history, cities such as Ouro Preto, Paraty, Olinda, Salvador and Diamantina are excellent choices for cultural tourism in Brazil, where foreigners can see the architecture of colonial times in Brazil in very well preserved conditions.

The most famous cities are Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Manaus and Brasilia. When it comes to Rio, it is impossible not to think of places such as Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf Mountain), Jardim Botânico, Copacabana, Corcovado and Baía de Guanabara. It was precisely these natural riches and their strong impression on the human soul that made the city a source of inspiration for artists and intellectuals from around the world and led to it being listed as a Cultural Heritage Site. This is the first city in the world to receive this honor.

São Paulo, on its turn, is a cosmopolitan, business city, full of restaurants, bars and with a very rich cultural life. The city represents the most important economic center in Latin America and hosts an average of one event in every hour of the year. Manaus, in contrary, in the main entrance to the Amazon jungle. The late 19th century marked one of the region’s golden moments, with the discovery of rubber trees and latex. With Manaus as the wealthiest city in Brazil at that time, it housed elegant buildings such as the Opera House, with its eclectic style and neo-classical and Greco Roman influences. Last but least, Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. Built during the 1960s, it was projected by world famous architects and artists, including Oscar Niemeyer, Burle Marx, Athos Bulcão and Lucio Costa. Brasilia is in the heart of the Country and home not only to the Government authorities, but also to the Embassies resident in Brazil.

In order to conclude…

Before concluding this brief presentation about the country where I was born, grew up and that I love the most in this world, it is worth mentioning that in the last years Brazil has proven to the entire world its capacity of successfully holding Mega Sports Events. In 2014, Brazil was home to one of the most beautiful and celebrated Soccer World Cups of all times and, in 2016, more than 10,000 athletes, from 200 countries competed in the first edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in South America.

Increasingly, more and more foreigners, including Indonesians, are becoming curious about Brazil and willing to visit the country. The current difficulties faced by my country do not change the fact that Brazil is one of the most beautiful and interesting countries on earth, blessed by its nature and unique people. The best way to understand it is just going there. The invitation has been done. Hope to see you in Brazil.

Filipino Chicken AdoboContributed by: Mina Cd.L Northcott

Ingredients:

Chicken legs & thighs - 1 kg Sliced garlic - 2 heads1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar1/2 Kikkoman soy sauce 1/2 tsp Ground white pepperWhite whole peppercorns - abt a tsp

Procedure:

Heat oil in a pan. Saute the garlic and add the chicken legs & thighs to seal.

Once the chicken pieces are slightly brown, add the soy sauce. Let it boil, then add the vinegar. Make sure you do not touch the pan whilst the vinegar is added as this will create a soury taste. Bring it back to a boil then lower the heat & simmer with the lid closed. Allow the chicken to cook for about 15-20 mins until the meat is tender, then take the lid out & continue simmering until the sauce reduces & thickens.

Best served with plain white rice.

Million from Ibu Iriana Joko Widodo in addition to Outside Donation. The official handover was on Friday 28th July. The Children, teachers and parents are very happy because they can

have classes even in heavy rain, and it is much brighter and cleaner inside the school now.

WIC Jakarta visits Palembang18 – 20 July 2017

Our latest trip took us to Palembang, capital of South Sumatra province.

The primary reason for going to Palembang was to pay tribute to the Governor of South Sumatra, Bapak Alex Noerdin, and his wife Ibu Eliza, for their generous contribution as lead sponsor of the 2016 Annual WIC Bazaar.

Palembang at a glance

Palembang has a population of a little under 2 million and as such is the 9th largest city of Indonesia. Its history goes back to the 8th century AD, when it served as the center of the upcoming Buddhist Kingdom of Sriwijaya. It is the oldest known city in Indonesia.

Palembang’s location along the banks of the Musi River makes it a very convenient spot for trade and exchange, securing its existence across centuries. The city today features the well-known Ampera Bridge, that divides the northern part – called Seberang Ilir – from the southern part – called Seberang Ulu.

Palembang hosted the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in 2011, and has been selected to co-host the 2018 Asian Games together with Indonesia’s capital Jakarta.

We had the honour of being welcomed by Ibu Eliza herself accompanied by the Governor’s Deputy Bapak Johannes Situmorang, at the Governor’s residence Griya Agung Palace. We were received very warmly and spent a wonderful evening enjoying local food, traditional dance, and singing and dancing.

We visited Palembang's landmark sites, such as the Ampera Bridge, the Musi River and the Jakabaring Sports Complex for the 2018 Asian Games, including an exclusive visit to Gelora Sriwijaya (Sriwijaya Stadium).

Getting glimpses of a mesmerizing past

We learned much about Palembang's history with visits to Siguntang Hill with stories about the large ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Sriwijaya (see the map on the right), an exclusive visit to a traditional Palembang residence Bayumi House, an overall view of former colonial fort Benteng Kuto Besak (currently used by the military), and a walk around Kemaro Island.

Savoring the flavors, scents and sights of wonderful local dishes

Of course, we had to get a taste of the local delicacies including the local pindang (soup with fish) and the famous pempek (a savoury fishcake delicacy with varying content and sauce).

Being awed by beautiful local fabrics and traditional dress

We also had a chance to see how songkets (traditional local dress) are made by hand, a process that can take from 2 weeks up to 3 months, and had ample opportunities to buy many different scarves, songkets, kains and sarongs.


And did you know that …

• … the province of South Sumatra spans around 91,600 km2, and is bigger than countries like Portugal, Serbia and Austria, and only a little bit smaller than countries like Jordan, Hungary and South Korea?

• … the name Palembang is derived from two Malay words, with “pa” meaning “the place” and “lembang” meaning “always or often inundated by water”?

• … the Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang will start on the special date of 8-8-2018?

• … it takes 2 weeks to 3 months to make a songket, depending on the complexity of the design which takes up most of the work?

WIC Lebaran PartyThursday 27 July 2017

This year an estimated 30 million Indonesians made the annual trip to their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri and Lebaran with their families. It is one of the largest recurring temporary human migrations in the world, also referred to as mudik.

For some, the trip is only short and one of many visits to their families. For others, the trip can take days and constitutes the only time in a year (or even several years) that they see their spouse, their children, their parents and the larger family. For all, the Lebaran period is a special time, a time of the Indonesian tradition of returning to one’s birthplace.


This year’s Lebaran Party was themed “West Java Escape”, celebrating the natural beauty and the wonderful traditional dances of West-Java, with its Sundanese people longing to spend time with their families over the holidays.

With over 120 WIC-members joining, the Party featured an impressive Sundanese percussion performance by the invigorating Rampak Kendang group, a beautiful traditional peacock dance by the 3 ladies of Tari Merak, and a surprise performance by well-known artist Sam Bimbo and his friend and keyboard player Iman Djunaidi.
