Wonder Lab inspires a "wonder" for learning leading to a lifetime of opportunities for students in grades K-6.

During the month of September, K-6th grade students were transported to our corporation's state of the art Wonder Lab for hands on learning in Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Mathematics.

NESC Wonder Lab experiences are coordinated by Gretchen Brown, an experienced NESC teacher who was also nominated by the Indiana Department of Education for the Ford Next Generation STEM Project-Based Learning Certification Team.

Staffed by trained volunteers, including supportive parents, community volunteers, retired teachers and school board members, the lab experiences are intentionally structured

following the W.I.L.D. thinking model: Wander to Wonder, Initiate an Investigation, Listen to Learn, and Discover the Dance. (©2014)

Experiences for September included building a prototype cage for swimming with sharks followed by a virtual reality experience, completing circuits using everyday items to power a computer, growth mindset training, and programing ozobots.

Developmental Preschool at NEEE East Elementary School is home to the Greene/Sullivan Co-op's developmental preschool for both Northeast and Shakamak students. The preschool is taught by Paulette Lannan who is starting her 26th year teaching.

Lannan says, "My students all learn the preschool basics, but they also learn compassion for others and that is one of the most rewarding parts of the job to witness."

Preschool students are instructed by a certified teacher and attend school half days, 4 days a week.

For more information about the preschool and to schedule an evaluation/screening for your child, please call the East Elementary School office.

Children's Choir at NENE A grant through Arts Illiana provides North Elementary students an opportunity to learn more in depth music knowledge through a partnership with the Terre Haute Children's Choir and Indiana State University.

The after school enrichment program offered for K-2 students saw a tremendous turnout. Pictured above: ISU music student, Miss Fenton, leads the class to give students a musical enrichment opportunity.

The Terre Haute Children's Choir says this is a great opportunity for students to truly learn to sing from a trained musician.

TBIRD TRAINERS

In an effort to keep the hallways a positive and stress free environment, North Central Principal, Ms. Liston, enlisted the help of a few trusting members of the student body.

Selected students from each grade level serve as peer mentors known as "TBIRD

TRAINERS."

"TBIRD TRAINERS" help their fellow students and community members by making things run smoothly, offering support for their peers, and lending a

helping hand around the school.

We invite you and your family to come and celebrate the first of its kind, The NESC Wonder Lab! Our Wonder Lab was established in June 2019 and funded with Department of Education grants. The lab was physically created by volunteers, including passionate teachers and their supportive spouses as well as community members, with the vision of inspiring a "wonder" for learning that will lead to a lifetime of opportunity.

The mission: To empower students to think for themselves, critically and creatively, as they seek to solve problems in order to change their world, to think W.I.L.D.!

Join us on Tuesday, October 8th for a special ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:30 pm followed by an open house where you can come in and experience the lab for yourself until 7:30 pm.

You're Invited...

A big thank you to our local Casey's General Store and our community for donating water for North Central fall athletes! Misty Reed of Casey's and her fellow employees offered each customer the opportunity to purchase a bottle of water for NC. After only five days, Reed delivered 600 bottles of water to our school on behalf of our community. Thank you!

Thank you to our grounds crew, Greg Wells (left) and Mike Stone (right) and school board member, Don Ransford, (center) for planting grass seed at North Elementary!
