Thank you to those who have participated in our fundraising for Alzheimer’s. Between

Good Bye Party for our Activity Assistant, Phyllis

For those of you who don’t know, Phyllis will be leaving Tradition.

She is moving back to Gary, Indiana to be with her husband. She

came to Minnesota 3 years ago to be closer to her 3 children and

her grandchildren. She has met many new friends along the way.

She has brought many talents to the Activity Department and has

been a great help at the Front Desk. We will miss Phyllis, but wish

her good luck!

Join us in the Community Room on Friday, September 13th at 2:00 .

Mobile Batteries will be here on Monday, September 23rd at 1:00pm in the Lobby. They sell

all kinds of batteries and will install as well.

Podiatry: The foot doctor will be here on September 24th . If you are already signed up

with them, you will get a door hangar with time of appointment. If you would like an ap-

pointment or more information, please see Sarah.

My life journey began in a small town of Shelton, WA, in the deep blue-green of the Pacific North-

west. Though the Northwest remains the home of my heart to this day, our family ended up moving

about quite a bit due to the fluctuations of the paper industry in which my father worked. By the

time I entered 3rd grade, Rayonier, my dad’s company, had transferred my father down to Georgia.

There our family spent 3 years experiencing the events that would bring on the much needed social

and political changes of the 60’s. When Dad joined another paper company, PCA, we hopscotched up

to the state of Michigan. There we lived in Manistee, a small midwestern town, smack on the shores of

beautiful Lake Michigan. I finished grade school and high school there before moving on to Western

Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Then, when at home for the summer break between my junior

and senior years, I met my husband Harry, who was already teaching high school in Manistee. After I

graduated from Western, we were married and began to raise our family that grew in size to include 2

daughters and 1 son. In the latter half of the 1980’s, Harry switched occupations and joined the Rhine-

lander Paper Company in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. This was a natural move because Harry had a

chemistry degree and he had been working for my father at the paper mill every summer before re-

turning to teaching and coaching each fall. In Rhinelander, I was once again surrounded by deep

green trees and lush vegetation and to make up for the loss of the big lake we so enjoyed in Manistee,

there were many small lakes, not unlike here in Minnesota. In Addition, there were many wonderful

people in the Rhinelander community, many of whom became close friends over the 35+ years we re-

sided there. On a personal level, when our youngest was in third grade, I felt it was a good time to go

back into the classroom which I had given up while raising the children. Of all the joys found in

teaching first grade, the greatest had to have been the thrill of seeing my students light up when they

finally caught on to reading. Magic! Then in 2008, my husband Harry was diagnosed with cancer and

despite being supported by fantastic Mayo Clinic staff, loving family and dear friends, last August he

lost his 10 year, hard-fought battle. That event triggered huge changes for me. Thankfully, both of

our daughters lived relatively close by in Minneapolis, so when circumstances necessitated a move,

the girls helped me to find Tradition. What a relief to meet the kind staff and residents of this commu-

nity! Clearly, once again I have found home.

We would like to say good-bye

and good luck to the following

This is a reminder if you are using

disposable wipes, please do not flush

them down the toilet as they clog the

sewer line. Thanks
