Catechetical Sunday

Why has a special day been set aside to celebrate and commission catechists?

Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Catholic Church. “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life…her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 7).

This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others.

As we focus on this year’s theme, “Teaching about God’s Gift of Forgiveness”, let us each reflect on the role that we play, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It is also a time for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this ministry as a community of faith.

We thank each of you, who volunteer in this ministry, for showing us how to live our faith! We will pray for you throughout the coming year.

Congratulations to Penny Litty as she celebrates

20 years of sharing her faith as a catechist!

Dear Friends, Arriving at another Catechetical weekend, I think back on how I learned to pray. I can remember my mother and father teaching me prayers to say, probably the Our Father and the Hail Mary. More than the words though I remember them kneeling down with me to pray. I remember being impressed by that simple act: adults who were big in my life, got down to my world level to speak to God with me. My folks were some of a long line of people who “passed me along” with the seeds of faith planted within me. We have many such people in our parish: Religious Education Catechists, Catholic Preschool and School Catechists, RCIA Catechists, Sacrament’s Catechists, Marriage Preparation Sponsor Couples, Baptism Seminar Presenters, Youth Ministers, Adult Faith Formation Members, Children’s Church Catechists. Consider in your own life who “passed you on” and give thanks to God that such generous people were a part of your life too. Yearly our parish offers the opportunity for participation in Small Faith Sharing Groups which meet around the seasons of Lent and Advent. Sign up for these Parish groups will be available in the next few weeks. I know from experience that belonging to such a group is a help in the spiritual life and opens the scriptures up in a new way. We welcome back into action DOUBLE NICKELS group under the leadership of Ms. Annette Sharpe. The group meets this Sunday for their initial gathering. If you are 55 and older here’s the group for you. Lively in faith, generous wit, optimistic outlooks….. what more could you want? Double Nickels meets this Sunday, September 21st, at NOON in Fr. Engels hall. Have a week filled with the surprise of God……. Love,

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

To the family of Ronald Leclerc. To the Tommy Doran family on the death of

Pam’s father, Colton Blanchard.

BAPTISMS We welcome the following child to our parish family through the Sacrament of Baptism:

† Jett Miles Michael LeBoeuf, son of Jared & Mekel LeBoeuf

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”

All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’. Bring whatever is in your heart and soul and leave it at the feet of the Lord for HE will be at yours. “Adoration for the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth”. -Mother Theresa Join us every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for Eucharistic Adoration. Taking special time with our Lord is a great way to grow closer to Him.

St. Jean Vianney Social Responsibility News

The Fall Meeting of Social Responsibility Ministry Volunteers will be held September 25th at 6:30pm in the church office. If you volunteer in any of the Social Responsibility ministries (such as Food Pantry, Shelter Meals, Disaster Relief, Nursing Home Outreach, Threads of Love, Parents Night Out, JustFaith, Blood Drives, Elizabeth Ministry, Bereavement Ministry, etc.), - or – if you are interested in helping out with our holiday outreach programs, this meeting is for you. We will give updates on our ministries, and we will plan our Thanksgiving Outreach and our Christmas Giving Tree. This meeting is a great opportunity to meet others who are involved in Social Responsibility ministries. We look forward to seeing you 09-25-14 at 6:30pm. We are still accepting participants for this year’s JustFaith program. If you have been thinking about it, but have been hesitant to take the first step, call Lyn Hassenboehler in the church office to discuss it. JustFaith is a wonderful program that transforms the lives of all who participate. Lyn’s number is 753.7950 x208. Her office hours are limited, so leave a message, and she’ll call you back as soon as possible.

Gator Bites from St. Jean Vianney Catholic School

St. Jean Vianney Catholic School students were welcomed back to classes last month after a relaxing summer off! Students were greeted in the parish hall on August 7th by faculty and staff and started the year off right with a special prayer led by Fr. Tom and school administrators. Our spiritual theme this school year is “Standing Together on a Foundation of Faith”. Our school masses, retreats, para-liturgies, and service activities will be centered around this theme.

With this in mind, 8th grade students will soon begin their annual Come Lord Jesus! program. Come,

Lord Jesus! is a program committed to forming small Catholic faith communities. St. Jean Vianney School is about to begin its third year of Come, Lord Jesus! with 8th grade students. Parent volunteers lead groups of 5-7 students weekly in prayer, Sunday reading discussions and activities. Meetings take place during Religion classes on Tuesdays between September 30th and November 18th. Pray as these leaders and students venture out to share and live their faith!
