2016 EXPLORE KRANNERT WEEKEND September 22-24 • Krannert School of Management

Cara Putman has taken an unusual path to where she is now. She was homeschooled, and entered college at the young age of 16. She graduated with a degree in political science and history when she was 20, then started her career. She got married and decided to enter law s c h o o l while she was working full-time. Cara was accepted into the Department of Justice Honors Program, and was all set to begin her new career. However, Cara’s husband had other plans.

Her husband accepted a job at Purdue University. Cara would say that it has worked out quite well. “I work in a small town law firm where I do business planning, estate planning and adoptions. I teach graduate students business law, and I teach Master’s of Accounting students as well. And I’m the author of 19 books.” Cara also completed the Weekend MBA program in 2015.

For Cara, the Weekend MBA program was an enjoyable but a challenging experience. “The Weekend MBA is a great way to come back and learn things that are applicable to the business world, but to do it in a way that works when you have a family or an active career.”

An avid reader at a young age, Cara took an interest in writing books. She sent out letters to authors when she was 14 as part of an English project. Cara never had time to write until 2005, when all of the doors opened for her. Just two years later, in 2007, her first book was published. Cara writes historical and romantic suspense novels.

Karthik Kannan is a Professor at Purdue's Krannert School of Management, academic co-director for MS in BAIM (Business Analytics and Information Management), and co-director for IAC (Information and Analytics Center).

He has proposed the concept of "Design for Instincts" as a way to organize businesses in the current age, and his research focuses on the same theme. Specifically, he studies how different aspects of information technology may be used to exploit human instincts and biases in order to nudge/manipulate behavior. You can learn more about his research from here. He works on three primary research streams: pricing using auctions of information goods, pricing of data networks, and economics of information security. His papers have been accepted in several leading conferences and journals in the information systems area, including Management Science, Information Systems Research, Workshop on Information Technology and Systems, Workshop on Information Systems Economics,International Conference on Information Systems, and Conference on Information System and Technology. His papers have won the Best Paper Awards in the 10th and the 15th Annual Workshop on Information Technology and Systems. He currently serves/has served as an Associate Editor for Management Science, Information Systems Research, and MIS Quarterly. He is a member of AIS and INFORMS. He is also a CERIAS Fellow and Krannert's Faculty Fellow.

At Purdue, he teaches the IT course in the MBA programs (in the regular, weekend, and Exec Ed MBA). He has also been a visiting faculty member at GISMA and ISB. Previously, he taught the undergraduate core course as well as a database course.

Prior to joining Purdue, he obtained his PhD in information systems, MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and MPhil in Public Policy and Management all from Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the graduate school, he worked with Infosys Technologies for a couple of years. His undergraduate degree is in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from NIT Trichy (formerly, REC Trichy).
