Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, September 24, 2017
In today’s gospel from Matthew, we hear of the workers hired throughout the day to work in the landowner’s vineyard. The landowner hired some of the workers at dawn, some at nine o’clock, and some at five o’clock. Each of the workers received the usual wage. This is a lesson in God’s grace. God gives his grace to all within his time, not necessarily when we expect to receive it and not necessarily in the form in which we expect it. The year 2017 marks 500 years since Martin Luther published his 95 theses or complaints against the Roman Catholic Church that sparked the Protestant Reformation. One of the theological arguments of the Reformation that continues today concerns justification—how are we righteous before God? Are we justified by the grace of God alone (or faith alone), or are we justified by doing good works, or by both? In 2014 Tony Palmer, a Bishop with the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches and a personal friend of Pope Francis, addressed a Charismatic Evangelical Leadership Conference hosted by Kenneth Copeland, a minister from Fort Worth, Texas. During the address, Bishop Palmer introduced a video from Pope Francis asking for the prayers of the people who were attending the conference. Bishop Palmer in part stated, “I introduce the fact that since 1999, the protest of Luther is over—therefore we are now living in the Post Protestant era.” Why would a Protestant minister declare this? In 1999 representatives of the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation signed a document titled, “The Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.” In 2006, the
World Methodist Council adopted the document and on July 5, 2017, the World Communion of Reformed Churches also signed the document. The document resolves the argument on justification by clarifying that God grants His grace independent of the actions of man, but the good works done by man are the fruit that shows God’s grace is alive and working in our world. As Christians, and especially as Catholics, we are called to show our Christianity to the world. This was—and continues to be—on display by the actions of care and service conducted by the people of our parish and others who helped the people most affected by Hurricane Harvey. People pulled together and helped those in need and each other in the aftermath of the storm. We are called to continue in those efforts. Our parish does a lot of different things throughout the year. In order to do all the good that the parish does we need the efforts of many people. The parish finances its work by donations of time, talent, and treasure. One of the fund raisers is our parish bazaar. It is just around the corner—at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds on October 15, 2017. The parish is in need of donations for the silent and live auctions and the other events, and we can always use people to man the booths and other activities. God has placed us all in the Sacred Heart Parish—some for a life time, some for a season, and some for only a reason—but we are all here to gather strength and love from our Lord and from each other and to share that love and strength with others. May we take the love of God from this place to the world!
Deacon John Placette
