HOLD AN UKE
1 Neck points 10 o’clock on your body.
2 Left hand at neck, right arm wrap around, use
right forearm to tuck uke against your body.
3 Right hand should be able to strum on the
fretboard above the sound hole.
TUNE AN UKE
• String order: G C E A (top to bottom)
• Practice plucking each string clearly, and
say each string’s name
• Video on how to use an electronic tuner
available at youtube.com/cynthialinmusic
STRUM CLEARLY
• Start with your thumb (easier grip) but you’ll want to move to using your index finger.
Get under the string and pluck each individual string clearly and loudly–don’t be
afraid of plucking hard.
• Then use the same force to pluck down onto the next string. Build control to be able
to stop on each string. Articulate each string, G C E A, and build into a slow strum.
• When the slow strum sounds clear, then you can speed up.
• Do this for each new chord that you try.
PLACE YOUR FINGER FOR CHORDS
• I recommend the “handshake” method. Hold your left hand out like you’re going to
shake someone’s hand, straight and vertical. Allow the neck of the ukulele to make
contact with your hand at the inside knuckle joint - this will serve as your anchor
point, try to maintain this connection to the uke at all times.
• Curl your fingers around into chord position. The very tips of your fingers should
press straight into the strings, and your knuckles should be perpendicular to the
fretboard, like a nail into a wall. Your thumb should be placed on the back of the
neck so that it’s as if you are pinching your thumb against your fingertips.
• Your palm should be curled, like you have a ping-pong ball tucked in your hand–be
careful that your palm does not press against the neck. Your wrist should be straight,
and your arm should support your wrist and hand.
• It will take some time for your hand and fingers to build stretch and strength.
Practice chord fingering for 5 minutes a day, and you will see fast improvement!

LESSON 1
THREE LITTLE BIRDS by Bob Marley
1 2 3 4
SIMPLE DOWN STRUM: d | d | d | d TIMING: 4 strums per chord
-
-
HOW TO PRACTICE: 5 minutes a day is good for your brain and good for your soul!
1 Always remember to tune your uke before you practice
2 Your fingertips may hurt at first - practicing 5 to 10 minutes a day will keep them from hurting too much and allow your fingertips time to build callouses.
3 Strum each chord clearly before you begin playing the song. You can practice transitioning between the chords as an exercise.
4 Check your handshake position, make sure the palm is curled and the knuckles are curled.
5 You can use the lesson tutorials for review at http://youtube.com/cynthialinmusic
6 There are tons of ukulele chord charts online - search for the song you want to play and give it a shot. Have fun!

ISLAND STRUM
TI MING: two island strums per chord, except on [ ] play only one island strum per chord
C G7
A long long time ago there was a volcano
F [C] G7
Living all alone in the middle of the sea
C G7
He sat high above his bay watching all the couples play
F [C] G7
And wishing that he had someone too
C G7
And from his lava came this song of hope that he sang
F [C] G7
Out loud everyday for years and years
F C G7 C
I have a dream, I hope will come true, That you're here with me, and I'm here with you
F C [F] [G7] C
I wish that the earth, sea and the sky up above-a Will send me someone to lava
C G7
Years of singing all alone turned his lava into stone
F [C] G7
Until he was on the brink of extinc-tion
C G7
But little did he know that living in the sea below
F [C] G7
Another volcano was listening to his song
C G7
Everyday she heard his tune, her lava grew and grew
F [C] G7
Be-cause she believed his song was meant for her
C G7
Now she was so ready to meet him above the sea
F [C] G7
As he sang his song of hope for the last time

Rising from the sea below stood a lovely volcano
F [C] G7

He tried to sing to let her know that she was not there alone
F [C] G7
