In the revisions of the Mass following the Council, the

Confiteor became one of three options for the penitential act near

the beginning of Mass. The Confiteor was removed from the

communion rite, where it interrupted the natural flow of events.

It remained at the beginning, but as one option rather than an

obligatory prayer. It was offered to the entire assembly to recite

rather than to the priest alone. This enabled everyone to partici-

pate in the Mass from the very start as the priestly people. One

way people participate consciously is to acknowledge to one an-

other and to God that they have sinned, to say aloud, “I confess.” Paul Turner Copyright © 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #170, San Jose, CA 95112,

ber? Jona McNamee will be teaching a six week educational series to

give grandparents the skills and tools needed to manage the stress of

raising grandchildren. She will be utilizing the Powerful Tools for

Caregivers program to help grandparents learn to take better care of

themselves, improve communication with family and professionals,

reduce stress, guilt, anger, and depression. Classes consist of six, 2

Harvest breakfast! Sunday October 8th at Corpus Christi Parish, 8 am

until 1 pm. All are welcome; Freewill offering. Sponsored by the

Corpus Christi City Wide Adoration Society.

Jesus said to his disciples, “Can you not watch one hour

with me? The difference between spending time with

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament exposed in a monstrance

rather than the tabernacle is the same as the difference

between conversing with a friend face to face instead of

having a closed door between you. Corpus Christi’s

City-Wide Adoration Society invites your participation

in Eucharistic Adoration. All families are asked to com-

mit and become involved. Please contact Marilyn Bradshaw, 858-5856,

or Sandy Wedel, 727-3773, for more information.

Please plan to come to the TRAINING for Family

Promise volunteers presented by our city0wide Di-

rector, Sharon Odden in the parish hall at 7:00 pm

on Tuesday September 12. Refreshments will be

served. All are welcome.

Three donors chipped in to purchase a gas card so our homeless

family could go and visit Grandma (age 90) this past weekend.

This lovely family lost their husband/dad 3 weeks ago and

needed to eat cookies that Grandma bakes. Family Promise as

a volunteer program blends the lives of both the homeless fami-

lies we serve and the incredible volunteers of the parish.

THANK YOU!

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world

and forfeit his life?” - MATTHEW 16:26

St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you

are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this

stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and

treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our

priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the mate-

rial world.

Musicians Rehearsals are suspended for the sum-

mer. You are still invited to join the music ministry, 30

minutes before Mass to go thru music. All voices and

most instruments are welcome to help lead the music.

Liturgical Bits and Bytes ~ The Confiteor: Near the begin-

ning of Mass, the community acknowledges its sinfulness

and dependence on God’s mercy. One option is for all to

recite the Confiteor, the prayer that begins, “I confess to al-

mighty God.” As people admit their sin, they strike their

breast.

The Confiteor is an old prayer, but its current place-

ment in the Mass is an innovation. Prior to the Second Vati-

can Council, the priest recited the Confiteor by himself, one

of several prayers at the foot of the altar that introduced the

Mass, and the servers repeated it after him. The people

prayed the Confiteor later, just before receiving communion.

This was because for many years, people did not receive

communion at Mass frequently. When they received com-

munion outside of Mass—for example, when they were

sick—they said the Confiteor first. As communion at Mass

became more common, the Confiteor came with it. So essen-

tially, a communion service had been inserted into the

priest’s Mass, as if the people’s communion had nothing to

do with the priest’s communion or the sacrifice preceding it.

The priest even distributed communion from the tabernacle

rather than the newly consecrated bread and wine on the al-

tar.
