SCOUTING MARYLANDOpponent History: 2014 marks the first-ever football meeting between these two programs.

Last Time Out: Maryland opened its season on the Big Ten Network, topping James Madison 52-7. The Terps rushed 50 times for 285 yards and five touchdowns, and completed 18 passes for 186 yards and two TDs. Maryland QB C.J. Brown rushed for 61 of those 285 yards, including three touchdowns, while Brandon Ross and Wes Brown split carries in the backfield. The Terrapins were a perfect 6-6 in the red zone, and con-verted half of their third down conversions. USF will have to stop Maryland’s three-pronged running attack to slow down the Terrapin offense Saturday.

Common Threads: Kofi Amichia and JaJuan Dulaney both played offensive line at McEachern High School in Powder Hills, Ga. Amba Etta-Tawo (WR) also played for McEachern.Hans Louis and Clavion Nelson both hail from Hollywood, Fla., as do Jake Wheeler (senior OL, American Heritage HS) and Clarence Murphy (senior LB, Hollywood Hills HS).

New Conference: Leaving the ACC after the 2013-14 season, Maryland joins Rutgers in the move to the Big 10 conference. The Terrapins return 97.5 percent of its offensive yards from 2013, ranked first in the FBS with 5,160 yards.

Dual Threat: Despite 50 rushing attempts in its season opener, Maryland has no reservations about throwing the football downfield. The Terrapins’ passing attack aver-aged 14.05 yards per completion in 2013, the 16th-best yards-per-completion rate in the nation. Quarterback C.J. Brown is at the head of this attack, and can beat teams with his feet as well as his arm. Brown had a hand in 25 touchdowns in 2013, and scored four in Maryland’s sea-son opener against James Madison (three rushing, one passing). Brown passed for 2,242 yards and ran for 576 more last season alone.

Sack Attack: Terrapin senior defensive lineman Andre Monroe leads the nation among returning FBS play-ers, averaging 0.66 sacks per game. At 5-11, 282 lbs, Monroe is undersized but agile, and will need to be accounted for Saturday.

2014 USF GAME NOTES GAME 2 • MARYLAND

WWW.GOUSFBULLS.COM – 4 – @USFFOOTBALL

NEW BULLS MAKE IMPACTIn the 2014 season opener, USF’s leading tackler (Jamie Byrd, 11), leading rusher (Marlon Mack, 275), leading re-ceiver (Rodney Adams, 3 for 67) and creator of the lone interception (Byrd) were all playing their first game in a USF uniform.

POWER RUN GAME EMERGESCoach Willie Taggart’s power run base offense struggled in season one with an offensive line inexperienced in the system and injuries to top runningback Marcus Show. The Bulls run game opened the 2014 season with a veteran and well schooled offensive line and a new offensive coordina-tor in Paul Wulff, but not knowing who its lead ball carrier would be:n In the season-opener USF recorded 294 rushing yards, 127 more than last season’s best of 167 vs. FAU. The Bulls total offense of 454 yards was the most under Coach Tag-gart and the most since the Bulls totaled 552 yards against Syracuse in 2012.n USF four TDs (all rushing) and 36 points both marked highs under Coach Taggart. The Bulls totaled just 11 TD in 2013 with highs of 3 TD and 26 points for a game.

BULLS SEE SIGNIFICANT STRENGTH/WEIGHT GAINSUSF has seen major strength gains during off-season train-ing under Director of Athletic Performance Irele Oderinde. n Notable examples of weight lifted include senior defen-sive end Todd Chandler squatting 700 pounds and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Deadrin Senat benching 475 in late July.n 18 returning Bulls have added 14 or more pounds of muscle. Among the most notable muscle mass gains that have showed up in weight gains: Player - current weight (gain from 2013):QB Mike White – 211 (+25); LB Nigel Harris – 220(+30); LB Tashon Whitehurst – 225 (+27) ; DB Lamar Robbins – 200 (+19); DT Bruce Hector – 296 (+21); DE Mike Love – 245 (+32); OL Kofi Amichia – 290 (+25)n Two returning Bulls defensive tackles projected to have a significant impact in 2014 have also greatly sculpted their bodies after their first season on campus. Sophomore DT Derrick Calloway has trimmed 43 pounds from his frame to come into 2014 at 6-2, 285. Redshirt freshman Deadrin Senat has trimmed 18 pounds to come in at 6-1, 300.n Bulls newcomers have also made some big strength and weight gains in just their first couple of months on campus. Some notables: Player - current weight (gain over an-nounced HS weight on signing day): LB Jimmy Bayes – 225 (+40); RB D’Ernest Johnson – 207 (+27); DE Vincent Jackson – 246 (+11); Tyre McCants – 211 (+11); CB Devin Abraham – 187 (+12); CB Tajee Fullwood – 209 (+34); DE Demetrius Hill - 270 (+15); LB Juwuan Brown – 230 (+20); WR Stanley Clerveaux – 196 (+11)

TAGGART TURN AROUNDHead Coach Willie Taggart has been here before. He took over a WKU program that had lost 20-straight games and posted a 2-10 mark in his first season as head coach. The following campaign, the Hilltoppers went 7-5 to post the big-gest turn-around in Sun Belt Conference history. WKU fol-lowed that up with a 7-6 mark in 2012 and WKU’s first-ever bowl game appearance. Taggart produced two consecutive winning seasons, including a 7-1 Sun Belt Conference finish in 2011, marking the largest one-year turnaround in conference history.

SCHEDULE NOTESn The Bulls first four games of 2014 will be played in the friendly confines of Raymond James Stadium and five of the first six. n USF has three “Big Five” conference opponents on its non-conference schedule making it one of the toughest in the nation. Only five other teams nationally will face as many during the non-conference portion of their schedule. USF will play two Big Ten teams (Wisconsin and Maryland) and one ACC team (N. C. State). Wisconsin is a consensus preseason Top 25 team by preseason publications.n USF will face six opponents that reached a bowl game in 2013. n USF will face only four of the 10 teams it lost to in 2013, and those four games are the last four of the season.n Of USF’s first eight opponents, the Bulls will face four for the first time ever, have not faced two in the previous five season and defeated the other two (conference opponents Cincinnati and UConn) in 2013. USF won’t face a team it lost to in 2013 until the ninth game of the season vs. Houston.n USF’s will face three teams predicted to finish in the top four in The American by preseason publications Athlon and Sporting News in the Bulls’ final three home games of 2014.n Florida heat: The Bulls’ home games against Maryland (Sept. 6) and North Carolina State (Sept. 13) both will kick off at 3:30 p.m., marking the first time in USF’s 18-season history it will have two home afternoon kickoffs in Septem-ber, a month with average high temperatures hovering around 90 degrees with high humidity. It equals the total number of September afternoon home kickoffs in USF’s previous 17 seasons. Last year’s Miami game and the 2007 North Carolina contest both began shortly after noon.

CLIETT TO ANCHOR DEFENSESenior linebacker Reshard Cliett returns from off-season shoulder surgery, returning to 100 percent in July, to be a veteran anchor for the Bulls’ defense. He is the top returning tackler having posted 56 stops and 7.0 TFL in 2013. The Georgia native has added 15 pounds of muscle to his frame to enter 2014 at 6-2, 235 pounds.

2014 USF GAME NOTES GAME 2 • MARYLAND

ANGRY BYRDJunior transfer DB Jamie Byrd, a native of nearby Dade City who earned NJCAA second team All-American and MFC first team All-Conference honors while playing at Iowa Western Community College in 2013, joined the Bulls as an early enrollee in January. Byrd quickly earned the nick-name “Angry Byrd” from his USF teammates, a take on the popular Angry Birds game and a reflection of his hard hitting relentless style that quickly installed him as a starting safety in the spring.n Byrd came out of the gate strong in his USF debut in the season opener vs. WCU recording his first interception as a Bull just over three minutes into the game. He went on to lead USF with 11 tackles (8 solo) and added a TFL and a pass break-up.

VETERAN O-LINE BULKS UPThe Bulls return all five players that started the major-ity of game on the offensive line in 2013 and add to that mix guard Thor Jozwiak, who started five games in 2012. Among the returning starters are three players, center Aus-tin Reiter, guard Brynar Gundmunddson and tackle Darrell Williams, that started every game and tackle Quinterrius Eatmon, who started 11. Three seniors (Eatmon, Reiter and Williams) enter 2014 with at least 17 career starts led by Eatmon with 35 games played and 34 career starts. n The five returning starts and Jozwiak come into the 2014 season at average weight of 311. They entered 2103 at an average of 297, a gain of more than 13 pounds of muscle per player over last year. n Among the biggest gainers is center Austin Reiter who played at 273 last season and enters 2014 at 296 (a 23-pound gain). Reiter has been named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy for the second straight season. He has started every game the last two seasons and has missed just one offensive snap over that period.n Eatmon, Jozwiak, Reiter and Williams were all named to a preseason all-conference team by either Athlon or Phil Steele.

JOZWIAK RETURNSJunior guard Thor Jozwiak, who started five games as a redshirt freshman in 2012 but missed the entire 2013 sea-son with a heart condition that required surgery, has re-turned to full strength and added 21 pounds of muscle to enter 2014 at 6-4, 321-pounds. The outgoing team leader and nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team moved to the top of the depth chart at left guard in the spring and is ex-pected to make a major impact on the offensive line in 2014. Jozwiak is also a talented golfer who maintains around a six handicap on the course.

TOP TIGHT END DUOBoth senior tight end Mike McFarland (6-5, 252) and junior tight end Sean Price (6-3, 250) were recognized among the best tight ends in the nation by preseason publications and watch lists. n McFarland, who was the Bulls’ second leading receiver in 2013 with 23 catches for 288 yards, was named to pre-season all-conference teams by Sporting News and Athlon and to the CFPA Tight End Trophy Watch List. He missed the season opener with a knee injury.n Price, who enters 2014 with 42 career catches, was named to the Mackey Award Watch List and a preseason first-team all-conference pick by Phil Steele.

DEFENSE LOOKS TO CONTINUE TO SHINE UNDER BRESNAHANUSF’s defense will look to build on the tremendous gains achieved under first-year defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan in 2013. Bresnahan, an NFL defensive coordi-nator for eight seasons, brought an attacking, ball-hawking mentality that saw USF force 25 turnovers and 11 intercep-tions, nearly tripling the teams turnovers caused (9) and producing more than five times the interceptions (2) a year after ranking last in the FBS in interceptions. n USF scored three defensive touchdowns as well as a special teams TD off a blocked field goal and produced 57 points off turnovers a year after posting 12. n Ranked 11th in the FBS with 13 recovered fumbles and 12th with 7.6 TFL per game.n USF ranked No. 21 in the FBS in total defense allowing 350 yards per game.n USF experimented with a 3-4 defense during the spring as the Bulls look to replace five defense linemen from the 2013 two-deep.n USF returns five players from the 2013 two-deep in both the linebacking corp and the secondary.2014 SEASON:n The Bulls defense created two turnovers in the first four minutes of the season opener getting a fumble and an inter-ception on WCU’s first two possessions.

QB STABILITYAfter going through four different starting quarterbacks during the 2013 season, which saw the Bulls produce and NCAA Division IA low 11 offensive touchdowns, USF en-tered the 2014 campaign with anticipation of much great-er prospects at the quarterback position. Returners Mike White (sophomore) and Steven Bench (junior) batled for the starting job in the preseason with White emerging as the starter. Both offer the Bulls experienced options. • White played in six games and started the last five as a true freshman last year, leading the Bulls with 1,083 yards passing and 93 completions. He posted the best debut by a USF quarterback in history passing for 311 yards and two TD at Houston. He will work with the Bucs for two weeks and was one of only four coaches selected to participate in the program nationally.

STAFF CHANGES & ADDITIONSEntering his second season at the helm, Head Coach Willie Taggart oversaw some significant staff changes in the off-season. Taggart hired former Washington State head coach Paul Wulff to serve as offensive coordinator and coach the Bulls offensive line. Wulff was working on the San Francisco 49ers offensive staff at the time of his hire. Taggart shifted 2013 receivers coach David Reaves to the quarterbacks coach position for 2014 and hired former Florida State standout receiver and Louisville as-sistant Ron Dugans to coach the receivers. Reaves previ-ously coach quarterbacks at South Carolina, New Mexico and the IMG Academy, while Dugans was credited with turning out all-conference receivers for the Cardinals. Taggart also hired former Western Kentucky defensive tackle Irele Oderinde to lead the Bulls strength program. Oderinde played for Taggart at WKU and was previously helping to guide the strength program at West Virginia.

For the first time in program history, USF Athletics had every one of its 18 evaluated teams earn a score of 950 or better. USF joined Rutgers as the only two Ameri-can Athletic Conference teams to have all teams post an APR of 950 or higher and was one of just 36 Division I-A football-playing schools to accomplish the feat. • USF Football also logged a record number of 23 aca-demic all-conference honorees in 2013, marking the sev-enth straight season in which the Bulls have increased their number of honorees.
