the day/time coverage is needed. If the hour fits your schedule, you can click to
accept that time with our Lord. Sign up at https://adorationpro.org/riverma or call

Ste Marguerite d’Youville/St. Mary Magdalen/St. Rita
I was sitting quietly in prayer in the chapel and an image came to me that had me laugh out loud. Earlier in the week I had watched a video clip on the news about an intrepid Cambridge police officer stealthily following a skunk around a parking lot. He saw the skunk was in distress as a paper cup had become stuck onto the skunk’s face and the skunk was circling around in distress, unable to see.
The police officer, with his partner recording the scene from a safe distance on his cell phone, finally was able to get close enough to the skunk to remove the paper cup from the skunk’s snout and free him from his predicament. Success!! But not for long. The skunk saw the officer, turned quickly, raised its tail and sprayed his “perfume” onto the officer.
I do not want you to get the wrong idea about my laughter. I was not laughing at the police of-ficer. In fact, I have enormous respect for him. I was laughing because out of nowhere I remem-bered the scene and the Holy
Spirit helped me make the connection between what happened to that police officer and what often happens to people who step forward and try to help. There is even an expression that seems particularly appropriate: “No good deed goes unpunished.”
People who choose to help others are often subject to receiving the “spray” of criticism and ingratitude. It is easy to understand why people choose not to get in-volved or to give of themselves. Yet, authentic Chris-tian life calls us to extend ourselves for others out of love for Christ. “Ships are safe in the harbor, but that is not why ships are built.” We are safe from rejection and criticism when we sit idly by, but that is not why we were “built” by God.
There is a story of a young monk observing one of his older brothers from a distance. He could see that the older monk was sitting by a pond and he kept re-coiling his hand. He wondered what he was doing and finally walked down to see. What he observed was that there was a scorpion trapped in a cluster of twigs in the water. The older monk was trying to free the scorpion. Every time the monk reached in to free the scorpion the scorpion tried to sting him. The younger monk was exasperated and said, “Why are you bothering trying to free that scorpion? Every time you get close it tries to sting you!” The older man smiled and said, “It is the scorpion’s nature when it feels under attack to sting to protect itself. I understand that. It is my nature, howev-er, to try to rescue it.”
A popular quotation, "Do It Anyway,” attributed to
Mother Teresa, but actually written on one of her con-vent walls by a student named Kent Keith sums up the sentiment of one serving Christ with generosity and joy in the midst of the world’s “skunks” (Mother Teresa is credited for the last stanza).
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulte-rior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
In the next few weeks and months there will be many opportunities and invitations to get involved in the parishes of the collaborative. I cannot, nor would not, guarantee that you will not be sprayed by a skunk’s perfume if you say “yes.” But, rather, out of love for Christ and for His people I would urge you: “Do it any-way.”
Sincerely,
Rev. Richard F. Clancy
