Ephphatha

H ere I am Lord. I ask you to help me to love you; take me to the desert, talk to my heart and say my name”. This is a song I heard when I was in Argentina few years ago. When I heard it, it touched my heart and my soul. If you ask me: “Why?” I have to say that I do not know. But I remember that when I heard it, all my emotions came out along with some tears. It was not a sad moment; it was not a moment of frustration nor a moment of loneliness. It was, in fact, an excellent and comforting moment when I could experience God’s love, mercy, and compassion. In the gospel we heard this Sunday, some people brought a deaf man with a speech impediment to Jesus and asked Him to lay hands on him. But what really catches my attention, when reflecting on the Gospel, is the fact that Jesus takes the deaf man away from the crowd to perform the miracle. This makes me realize that it is not only I or my soul who wants to be alone with the One who gives life. It is also God who desires to have an intimate moment with all of us. Very often we are preoccupied and distracted by all the activities we perform daily. Sometimes we get frustrated because certain things are not going in the way we want. Other times, we get so busy with our own personal and social affairs. And at the end, when night comes, when it is time to go sleep, many of us tend to forget that we should let ourselves be embraced by the One who always give us life, peace, and comfort. God’s presence is not felt any longer by many of us and our senses are not open to Him. God is near to all of us. He is waiting for us to let ourselves be embraced by His love and mercy. He knocks at the doors of our hearts and always calls us to come to Him. But many times, we prefer to act as if we are spiritually deaf. The Gospel mentions: “He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, ‘Ephphatha!’— that is, ‘Be opened!’”. The Gospel together with my experience in Argentina tell me that, even though some people are unaware of God’s voice and presence, there would be a time and a place when we would not be able to resist His loving touch. God will always take the opportunity to extend his hands toward us, to touch our senses, and to say to our heart: “Ephphatha”. And once with our senses opened, we would be able to hear the voice of the One who is Love, Mercy, and Compassion.

Z Biurka Ojca Jerzego

Ksiądz zwrócił się do nich z grzeczną prośbą, by usiedli bliżej ołtarza. Szło przecież o to by mogli oni lepiej w sposób świadomy, czynny i pobożny uczestniczyć we mszy świętej.

Jakże inne były czasy scholastyki, kiedy trzeba było koniecznie w dyskusji powtórzyć tezę drugiej strony, by móc z nim podjąć rozmowę. To samo może nam grozić w kontaktach naszych z Panem Bogiem. A Pan mówi do nas „szczęśliwi są ci, którzy słuchają słowa Bożego i strzegą go.” (Łk 11,28). Było pragnieniem ojców Soboru Watykańskiego II, by cały Kościół i każda poszczególna wspólnota chrześcijańska, odbudowała „duchowość słuchania”. Pan Bóg dał nam dwoje uszu, a jedne usta byśmy dwa razy więcej słuchali niż mówili.

Catholic Teachings – Know Your Faith

Learning to Defend Your Faith This year, beginning September 11 and concluding at the end of April 2019, St. Joseph the Worker Parish will engage in two hour sessions of “Catholic Apologe cs” on Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9 in Room 5 of the school.

What is Catholic apologe cs? One of the first things that may spring to mind is that Catholics should apologize for the crusades, inquisi ons and clergy abuses. Apologe cs is not the art of apologizing. Apologe cs is the knowledge of the details of our faith and the ability to com-municate them in a convincing and charitable way.

Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence. 1 Peter 3:15 (Revised Standard Version Catholic Edi on)

Both non-Catholics and many Catholics have a profound misunderstanding of Catholic teach-ing and history on many different issues. For example: Do Catholics worship Mary? Do statues in Catholic churches cons tute idolatry? Can we be saved by faith alone? Can Catholics “earn” salva on? Were “millions” killed in the Inquisi on? Why does the Catholic Church forbid con-tracep on and abor on? What does it mean to be “chaste?” Why can’t priests marry or wom-en become priests? How can Mary be the Mother of God if she is not God herself? Why should we believe Jesus is God? Couldn’t He just be a great teacher like Buddha? What is cen-tering prayer? How does it compare to New Age spirituality? How should faithful Catholics re-act to the abuses of some priests, nuns and bishops? And a mul tude of other faith issues.

At the end of Mass we are told to “Go and preach the Gospel.” Each Catholic is called to do that – usually in the context of family, friends and acquaintances. Are we familiar enough with the Gospels to actually do it? If so, are we confident that we truly understand what the Gospels mean in the context of Church teaching?

Many Catholics are very mid when it comes to defending or even understanding the teach-ings of our faith.

Please consider a ending the Tuesday evening apologe cs sessions at St. Joseph the Worker this year. They will be very interes ng and involve learning, discussion and growth in the un-derstanding of the depth of our faith.

All are welcome!! You may register at the Parish Office or online at stjosephworker.com. “Tui on” is only $35. for the en re year (or less if you cannot afford it).

SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It’s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heav-enly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you’re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you’re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you.

In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS pa-tients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us—nation, parish church, occupation, illness—can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the “communion of saints” is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life’s struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
