Children are back in school so please use cau-tion when driving through the community especially around school busses. It is il-legal to pass stopped school busses.

Parents should be more vigilant in watching their children’s activities during the first few weeks of school. I have witnessed through the years that some children become destructive when school starts as our vandal-ism problems increase signif-icantly when school lets out and when school begins. Just recently someone damaged one of the greens on the golf course by riding a bicycle on it and making ruts.

Another year of concerts has ended and the POA hopes everyone who attend-ed enjoyed themselves. We are happy to say that there were no real incidents this year to speak of. Altogether, the groups that collected the parking fees this year had some pretty nice days to col-lect on. I want to thank all of the groups that collected the

parking fees this year.I would also like to thank

the Security Department, the Clubhouse staff, and the Maintenance Department for all the extra work they had to do to make each patron’s time during the concerts a pleasurable one. Let’s look forward to next summer’s list of bands. Golfview Park Playground

A new playground is scheduled to be installed at Golfview Park on Brandywine Road during the week of September 5th. The old playground was over 25 years old, deteriorating and becoming unsafe for chil-dren to play on. Drainage Issues

We are aware of the drain-age issues we have through-out the community and we are working on getting them corrected. Property owners can help by keeping your ditches and culverts cleaned out and unobstructed. If you have a drainage issue please contact the POA office at 219-988-2581 so it can be investigated.

Branch Collections for Lake County portion of the community only

Fall branch collections for the Lake County portion of the community will begin on September 5 and continue until completed for that por-tion of the community. Piles must be placed out for col-lection by September 5.Branch Collections for Porter County portion of the community only

Fall branch collections for the Porter County portion of the community includ-ing Beachview Ct., Sandy Beach Dr. & all of Forest Ln. will begin on September 26 and continue until com-pleted for that portion of the community. Piles must be placed out for collection by September 26 but no sooner than September 16, 2016.

There will be no more collections once the crew has serviced your property. We will continue collecting branches that have fallen due to storm damage. Please contact the Operations Department at 219-988-4461 to schedule a collection.

Nothing larger than twelve (12) inches in diam-eter will be collected. Do not mix rubbish, roots, dirt and yard waste with branches. No drop offs will be allowed

Whether you are a parent, posting social media pic-tures of happy faces (yours and theirs) of kids going off to school for the first time or even the last time; we always have to remember there is a lot more to it. Happy or not we need to make sure that ev-eryone’s kids being sent off are safe. Parents should take the time to remind new teen drivers that the stop arms on school buses mean you need to stop.

I know we are going to start getting justifiable com-

plaints about drivers, both adult and teen, who are not stopping when buses are picking up or dropping off kids. The officers from this department will be out and issuing tickets to those found violating this state law.

Remember, kids will be kids; and we all know kids; they are not always paying attention to the things going on around them; so you as the driver of your car need to!

The national Safety Council recommends the following when sharing the road with a school bus:• If you’re driving behind a

bus, allow a greater follow-ing distance than if you were driving behind a car. It will give you more time to stop once the yellow lights start flashing. • It is illegal in all 50 states to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children.• Never pass a bus from behind – or from either direction if you’re on an un-divided road – if it is stopped to load or unload children• If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dan-gerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus• Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take

risksFor more safety informa-

tion, visit their site at - www.nsc.org/learn/safety-knowl-edge/Pages/back-to-school-safety-tips-for-drivers.aspx

Now for the sad part of my article - autumn is right around the corner; yep – cooler weather, warmer clothing and, I don’t even want to say it, but portable plug-in heaters. The mere thought of some of these has me cringing especially here in Northwest Indiana. We all know that weather in our area can go from the 80’s to the 40’s in just hours so I guess it’s time to get prepared.

When is the last time you had your furnace serviced? Do you want to be that house that has no heat when you need it? Have someone come out to take a look it and make

sure there are no leaks or oth-er issues that could prevent you from staying warm or worse yet cause a fire.

If you own a fireplace, make sure to get it inspected and cleaned from last year’s use. Check your screens that help keep flying sparks and cinders where they should be for holes or other damage. Make sure the chimney flue is cleared of creosote buildup from past uses, and in some case from possible nest-

ing animals during summer months.

Check your homes foun-dation for cracks, as they will only get worse when colder weather comes in. Inspect your roofs for damaged shin-gles that should be replaced so leaks don’t occur.

Now is the time of year to take advantage of the nice weather so you can get ev-erything done that needs to be done for the upcoming cold months.

Summer has come to an end and fall is in the air. Cool nights and warm days are great for cool season turf. The few days that the mercury climbs into the 90s isn’t very harmful because the limited amount of daylight hours. The high tem-peratures don’t last very long.

The fairways have been over-seeded with low-mow blue-grass. The process only took three days to complete. The only disruption to the playing

surface was the lines created by the seeder on the fairways.

The fairways will also be top dressed with sand and fertil-ized. Gypsum will also be ap-plied, gypsum helps to break down the clay soils which allows for more, and larger spaces between soil particles. This creates easier pathways for water and nutrient penetra-tion. This process has been re-peated the last few years and has helped the turf handle the summer stress.

The only major projects

planned for this fall is rip-rap-ping the ditch on #10, filling the rough traps on #13 and to remove the remaining dead ash and pine trees around the golf course. I still find it amazing that an insect can kill an entire species of trees. The entire removal process should be completed in a couple of weeks.

This fall we will continue repairing several small areas around the golf course. Soil, seed and netting will be put down in areas that have been damaged by carts, equipment, etc. Late September or early October the areas on the golf course that we don’t maintain on a regular basis will be cut down. This is a yearly practice

that keeps those areas from becoming a forest full of nox-ious weeds.

The final greens committee meeting will be on Monday, September 12, at 6 p.m. The usual first Monday in September is Labor Day. Fall is a great time to get out and play some golf and enjoy the weather. Soon the trees will be changing colors and drop-ping their leaves followed by cold winter, so enjoy playing golf now.

Finally, we are still look-ing for someone to help Kim maintain the flower beds, and I could use some additional help on the golf course. Call 988-3104 if interested.

Twin Lakes Utilities needs your help. You may unknow-ingly be contributing to the surcharging of the sanitary sewer system, causing un-treated wastewater to flood your neighbor’s homes and cause manholes to overflow.

Clear water from sump pumps, roof drains, founda-tion drains, etc., is not al-lowed to be discharged into the sanitary sewer system, it is designed for sanitary waste only. The major source of clear water entering the sani-tary sewer system is through the plumbing in homes.

Clear water from the above-mentioned sources overloads the system caus-ing untreated wastewater to

flood homes also polluting surface waters (lakes, rivers, and streams). These types of connections are a violation of state and local codes.

Twin Lakes Utilities re-quests that all sources of clear water that enter the sanitary sewer system be disconnect-ed and removed as soon as possible. By everyone aiding in this action it may reduce the need for the expansion of the Waste Water Treatment Facility and related Pump Stations thus keeping costs down for everyone.

If you need any help to de-termine if there is an illegal sewer connection inside your home or from the roof down-spouts, please contact Twin

Lakes Utilities Customer Service 877-294-8890 and our field staff will be happy to assist.

While it may appear rela-tively simple to perform the disconnection property own-ers should consult a licensed plumber to ensure that the “disconnect” is done prop-erly. If not done properly dangerous sewer gases and untreated wastewater may enter your home or business.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter. If you have any questions or need assistance, please con-tact Twin Lakes Utilities Customer Service at 877-294-8890.

Do you have an illegal sewer connection?

LOFS WGA Finalizing Plans for 6th Annual Garage, Craft & Vendor Sale

Currently, the LOFS Women’s Golf Association is currently finalizing their plans for their ‘Sixth Annual Harvest Time Garage, Craft & Vendor Sale’ scheduled for Saturday, September 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the lower parking lot of the LOFS Clubhouse.

A rain date has been sched-uled for Saturday, September 17.

According to Debby Gulley, Event Chair, all

LOFS and surrounding com-munity residents are wel-come to arrange for booth space to display sell and/or purchase garage sale items, craft pieces or general mer-chandise at a very reasonable cost. If you have items left from a summer garage sale or early fall cleaning, take advantage of our convenient location.

Due to the continued popularity of this event and limited number of booths, space will be reserved on a first-come, first-paid basis. Pricing has remained the

same as in years past. Rent for an approximate booth space of 10’ x 20’ is only $20. Vendors need to provide their own tables, chairs and display racks and the WGA provides the space and pro-motion of the event.

All applications must be received by September 5th with payment.

For your convenience, an application is available on the LOFS website. For more information, you may con-tact Debby Gulley at 219-305-2624, or by cell phone at 219-742-8644.

Obituary ~ Edward “Steve” Brown

LOFS Fire Auxiliary to host Crazy Bunco

By Mike Talley,MS4 CoordinatorLeaves in the Lake

It’s almost time for the leaves to change color and start falling. Previous years have seen lake side property owners blowing and dump-ing leaves into the lakes. Dumping leaves in the lakes has serious, negative side-effects on the lake waters.

The lake can handle the influx of leaves that are nat-urally blown into the lake from trees on a shoreline. But when some lake residents dump or blow leaves into the

lakes, it can upset the natural ecological balance.

Leaves have nutrients similar to that of yard fertil-izer. They contain high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These high levels of these nutrients will cause excessive algae growth in the lakes. While the lakes need some algae for a healthy food chain, too much can cause the lake water to turn a thick pea green color and have a foul odor. Doesn’t sound like a pleasant view looking out your back door. Some algae can release toxins that maybe

harmful to humans, animal life and fish.

The added work moving the leaves to the street will pay off. Not only does it improve that view out your back door, a clean beautiful lake view will add value to your property.

This year fall leaf collec-tions will begin October 17

and continue until the final date of December 16. At this time the Lakes of the Four Seasons’ Maintenance Department will be hard at work picking up the leaves left alongside the streets. These leaves will be used by neighboring farms to pro-duce compost for their fields.

Thank you for your generos-ity and your support!
