In this issue of Explore Your AAA:

Many of our members have asked questions regarding the status of REAL ID in Pennsylvania. I’d like to try to clarify some concerns related to this topic. Beginning October 1, 2020, you will need a federally accepted form of identification to board a commercial, domestic flight; visit a secure federal building; or enter a military installation that requires a photo ID.

For Pennsylvania residents over the age of 18, this means obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or photo ID, or another form of federally-acceptable identification (such as a valid passport, military ID, or a number of other acceptable forms). Pennsylvania has issued approximately 200,000 REAL IDs so far, and PennDOT expects 1.25 million total residents to opt for a REAL ID before the deadline next year.

Federal regulations require that PennDOT must verify the following documents for a customer before issuing a REAL ID-compliant product:

• Proof of identity • Proof of Social Security number • Proof of all legal name changes • Two proofs of current, physical PA address

If you already have a passport, you can certainly get a REAL ID, but TSA considers a current passport acceptable identification for boarding an aircraft. If you have a passport or passport card and want a REAL ID, PennDOT recommends that you wait until your next renewal to get one and avoid the initial rush. A standard PA state license is still acceptable for driving and general identification purposes.

I hope you have found this information to be helpful. For additional details on REAL ID, please visit dmv.pa.gov/REALID or AAA.com/REALID.

No one chooses the trick over the treat, but sometimes you can’t avoid Halloween mischief. Whether you’re throwing a monster bash with friends, going door-to-door with the little ghosts and ghouls, or just handing out candy at home, keep these tips in mind for a happy Halloween.

Prepare for pranksters. To avoid having your car egged or even stolen, park in a secure garage or a safe, well-lit area.

Look out for black cats, blind spots and Batman. Drive slowly and be on the look out for creatures that can come out of nowhere.

Light up the night. Keep walkways and stairs clear of debris and well-lit to avoid slips, trips and falls.

Follow safe pumpkin protocol. Place candles, lit jack-o-lanterns, matches and lighters where children can’t reach.

Beware the brew. Keep a close eye on your guests. You could be liable for injuries they cause to themselves or others while still at your party or driving home.

Say boo to bad luck with insurance. For more information on auto, home and other personal lines of insurance, contact your AAA Insurance Agent at 1-800-222-1469, visit AAA.com/Insurance, or stop by your local AAA office.

People like to plan for living, and most have financial goals that they prioritize throughout their lifetime. These priorities often include reducing debt — such as bills, the mortgage and student loans — paying for medical expenses, leaving an inheritance and maintaining their family’s standard of living if they die.1

Nearly one in five consumers say that these types of financial priorities are more important than getting life insurance.2 But did you know life insurance can actually help to solve for many of these financial concerns?

You shouldn’t have to decide between life insurance and saving for graduation, tuition, weddings or retirement. With the right product, you can save for life events and help protect your family at the same time.

Consider these stages of life and how life insurance can fit into each one:

YOUNG SAVERFor someone who’s single without children,

it may seem more important to pay off student loans and other debt than to take on a new financial obligation, especially if you’re trying to save up for something significant, like a down payment for a home or getting married. But if you’re planning on getting married, having kids or buying a home at some point in the future, now is actually a great time to think about life insurance as a way to help protect these plans.

The cost of life insurance is typically based

on three things: your age, health and habits. That means it gets more expensive as time goes by. It’s more likely you will qualify for better rates now, while you are younger — making it a smart idea to lock in lower life insurance premiums today.

MID-LIFE PLANNERIf you have an established career, a home

and a family, it may be time to start thinking about your children’s graduation parties, college expenses and even their wedding day. Life insurance could help to make sure there are funds available to your family for

these important events if something were to happen to you. It can also help maintain their standard of living in the event they lose your income.

RETIREESIf you’re a mature adult, life insurance can

help make sure your grandchildren have life insurance added to the financial protection they need in their own lives. It might also be time to start thinking seriously about an inheritance strategy for when you are no longer around — do you want funds to go directly to your children, your grandchildren, or perhaps a favorite charity? Life insurance can help make sure these proceeds go exactly where you’d like them to and provide you with added peace of mind.

Simply put, life insurance can help prepare you and your loved ones for a lifetime of financial priorities. Visit AAALife.com to get a free quote. Whether it’s a minor fender-bender or a serious crash, car accidents are stressful. Knowing what to do when a crash occurs can help minimize further damage to people and vehicles, and make the claims process easier.

BE PREPARED:• Have adequate auto insurance coverage.

Contact your AAA insurance agent to ensure you have the coverage you need.

• Store important information in your glove box, including vehicle registration, evidence of insurance and any relevant medical information for you and your family.

• Ensure your cell phone is charged whenever you get on the road, and keep a pen and paper handy to jot down information.

• Keep an emergency preparedness kit in your car, including a first aid kit, road flares, a flashlight with extra batteries, and water and nonperishable food.

WHAT TO DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER A CRASH:• Stay safe. Turn on your hazard lights and

move your car away from traffic if it is safe

to do so. Be aware of risks from other cars, fire or debris.

• Check yourself and others for injuries, and call 911 and an ambulance if needed.

• Depending on the state, it may be required by law to notify law enforcement and submit a report after a crash. If law enforcement officers do not come to the scene, file a report by visiting a local police department or an insurance agency immediately after a crash. Having a report on file may help later if a liability claim is filed.

• Record accident details, including the date, time of day and location. Don’t forget to note the other driver’s contact information, vehicle make and model, insurance company and policy number. Get driver’s license numbers if proof of insurance isn’t provided.

• If possible, take photos and video of vehicle damage, license plates of all vehicles involved and location of crash.

• Protect your ID. Do not give out your address or allow your driver’s license to be photographed. Give only your name, insurance provider, and policy number.

• Be careful of what you say. Don’t take the

blame or blame others. Investigation may show you were not responsible. Do not show your policy or share your policy limits.

• Call the number on your AAA Insurance card to report your claim as soon as possible. Give details while they’re fresh in your mind.

For more information about auto insurance, contact your local AAA Insurance Agent at 1-800-222-1469, visit AAA.com/Insurance, or stop by your AAA office.

In the heart of Alaska lies its most popular land attraction, Denali National Park and Preserve. With more than six million acres of vast, unspoiled wilderness, it’s easy to see why Denali National Park lands on many travelers’ “must-see” lists.

THE GREAT ONEAlaska is home to 17 of the 20 highest

mountain peaks in the United States, one being Denali, formerly named Mt. McKinley, and is the tallest peak in North America. At more than 20,310 feet, Denali’s granite spires and snowy summits stand majestically against the skyline, although it is not visible from the park’s entrance or any nearby hotels or campgrounds.

INTO THE WILDThe abundance of untamed wilderness

and unique wildlife make Denali one of the greatest natural places in the world. Here, visitors have the chance to see grizzly bears, Dall sheep, moose, caribou, wolves, and foxes. Many small animals also inhabit the park, such as lynx, wood frogs, hoary marmots, arctic ground squirrels, pikas,

and snowshoe hares. The park is also a bird watcher’s paradise with over 130 different species of birds including golden eagles, willows, arctic warblers, ptarmigans, and American golden plovers.

THINGS TO DOThe activities in Denali National Park are

nearly endless. Mountaineers travel from all over the world. Visitors take bus tours, bicycle rides or long walks down the 90 mile Denali Park Road, which is closed to most vehicles after Mile-15. As a result, Denali is still the great wilderness that it was 20 years ago. Other favorite activities include hiking, camping, rafting, fishing, wildlife viewing and flightseeing. For winter lovers, cross-country skiing, dog mushing, snowmobiling, and viewing the spectacular display of Northern Lights are popular activities.

WHEN TO VISITMore than 400,000 travelers journey to

Denali National Park and Preserve every year, primarily during peak season — mid-May through mid-September. However, Denali is open all year round, so if you wish to ski or

view the Northern Lights, visit between November and March.

Visiting Denali National Park and its great scenic mountain is unlike anywhere else in the world. If you’re ready for an adventure of a lifetime, your local AAA Travel Agent is prepared to help you plan the perfect Alaska vacation for you and your family. Contact a AAA Travel Agent at (800) 222-1469, visit AAA.com/travel or stop by your local AAA store.

Six or more months prior to your cruise• Purchase travel insurance. Whether it’s to

cover foreseeable issues or protecting your investment from unexpected problems, it’s good to be covered…just in case.

• Make sure your passport is updated. Passports can take up to six weeks to receive in the mail.

Three to four months prior to your cruise• Book flights and pre- or post-night hotel stays.• Research shore excursions. Cruise lines feature

a wide variety of on-shore excursions, like snorkeling or hiking through the rainforest.

• Pay your final bills.

Two months prior to your cruise• Book shore excursions. Yes, you can book

shore excursions on the cruise, however that flightseeing tour you’ve been dreaming of may be sold out once you get onboard.

• Shop for large-ticket items, such as wardrobe and luggage. Peruse your wardrobe for destination appropriate attire — don’t forget formal nights onboard! Inspect your

luggage and if there are any tears or its in poor condition, plan on purchasing a new set.

One month to two weeks prior to your cruise• Research your ship and destination ports.

Don’t cruise blind or you’ll end up in a large-sized port, feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do for the next eight hours.

• Make arrangements for your home while you’re gone. Go online and set dates for the post office to hold your mail and check with your newspaper service, too.

• Create a packing list. Keep in mind that your cruise may have multiple ports, which means multiple weather forecasts, and always consider on-shore excursions (such as hiking boots for a nature walk) when creating your list.

One week prior to your cruise• Leave your travel information and a copy

of your passport with a family member or close friend.

• Call your bank and credit cards to alert them

of your travel plans.• Print any boarding documents or other

information you will need about your cruise.

The day before your cruise• Charge all electronics — don’t forget to

pack the chargers!• Double-check everything on your packing

list. Throw last items in your suitcase and make sure you have everything you need in your carry-on: passport, cash, credit cards, documents, etc.

• Get a good night’s rest. With the anticipation of your adventure, it may be hard to get a full eight hours of sleep, but getting a good sleep is key to starting your vacation on the right foot.

AAA Travel Agents can assist you in the planning process, taking the stress away from you and making your vacation smooth sailing. Contact your AAA Travel Agent at (800) 222-1469, visit AAA.com/Travel, or stop by your local AAA office.

There are a lot of perks when you travel alone. For starters, you get to set the pace. Not into museums? Guess what? You don’t have to go! Enjoy browsing local boutiques? Take all the time you want. Nobody’s sitting on a chair in the entryway, nodding off while holding your bags. It’s liberating! I personally love traveling alone. If it’s your first time tackling a solo trip, I have a few tips.

SPEAK THE LANGUAGE First, it’s probably best to go somewhere

where you speak the language. That doesn’t mean you can’t travel internationally, but if you speak English, it may be easier to visit Ireland, Australia or the U.K.

CHOOSE YOUR COMFORT ZONE Another thing to consider? Whether or

not you want to visit a big city. If you’re not a city dweller, navigating New York, Chicago or Washington, D.C. might make you nervous. However, I think they are ideal places for solo travel. Lots of people

in big cities do stuff on their own, include going to movies, visiting museums and even dining alone. Plus, the streets are usually bustling with people, which makes it safer for you.

PLAY IT SMART Of course safety is a concern when you’re

traveling without a partner or group. Never feel obligated to tell people you’re alone. A white lie here is 100 percent A-OK. In fact, I don’t think there is anything wrong with sporting a fake wedding band. I know, I know. I wish that wasn’t such an effective deterrent, but it really is.

GET ACQUAINTEDAll that said, don’t be afraid to engage in

conversation. People often feel compelled to chat up the person eating dinner alone. Ask for recommendations on restaurants, shops, and fun things to do. That’s the exact kind of thing that will make your trip even more memorable.

October is Car Care Month at AAA, and as the weather starts cooling, AAA reminds motorists to complete a seasonal vehicle checkup to maintain safety and maximize efficiency.

Use the simple checklist below to determine your vehicle’s fall and winter maintenance needs.

 WINTER CAR CARE CHECKLIST

Battery and Charging System – Have the battery and charging system tested by a trained technician. AAA members can request a visit from a AAA Mobile Battery Service  technician who will test their battery and replace it on-site, if necessary. Visit AAA.com/Battery for more details.

Battery Cables and Terminals – Make sure the battery terminals and cable ends are free from corrosion and the connections are tight.

Tire Type and Tread – In areas with heavy winter weather, installing snow tires on all four wheels will provide the best winter traction. All-season tires work well in light- to-moderate snow conditions provided they have adequate tread depth. Replace any tire that has less than 3/32-inches of tread.

Uneven tire wear can indicate alignment, wheel balance or suspension problems that must be addressed to prevent further tire damage.

Tire Pressure – Check tire inflation pressure on all four tires and the spare more frequently in fall and winter. As the average temperature drops, so will tire pressures – typically by one PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Proper tire pressure levels can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker typically located on the driver’s side door jamb.

Air Filter – Check the engine air filter by holding it up to a 60-watt light bulb. If light can be seen through much of the filter, it is still clean enough to work effectively.

Coolant Levels – Check the coolant level in the overflow tank when the engine is cold.

Lights – Check the operation of all headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and back-up lights. Replace any burnt out bulbs.

Wiper Blades – The blades should completely clear the glass with each swipe. Replace any blade that leaves streaks or misses spots.

Washer Fluid – Fill the windshield washer

fluid reservoir with a winter cleaning solution that has antifreeze components to prevent it from freezing.

Brakes – If there is any indication of a brake problem, have the system inspected by a certified technician to ensure all components are in good working order.

Transmission, Brake and Power Steering Fluids – Check all fluids to ensure they are at or above the minimum safe levels.

Emergency Road Kit – Carry an emergency kit equipped for winter weather.

Many of the items on the list can be inspected by a car owner in less than an hour, but others should be performed by a certified technician. Motorists can identify reliable, high-quality repair shops with certified technicians by looking for the AAA Approved Auto Repair sign. Nearby shops can be located at AAA.com/repair.

17SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

New in-vehicle infotainment technology has the potential to increase comfort and extend mobility for older drivers, but first it has to stop distracting them. On average, older drivers (ages 55-75) removed their eyes and attention from the road for more than eight seconds longer than younger drivers (ages 21-36) when performing simple tasks like programming navigation or tuning the radio using in-vehicle infotainment technology, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles a driver’s risk of a crash.

“Voice-command functions found in new in-vehicle technology are intended to help drivers by keeping their eyes and attention on the road,” said Dr. David Yang, Executive Director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Unfortunately, the complexity and poor design of some of these systems could cause more harm for older drivers, in particular, instead of helping them.”

By 2030, more than one in five drivers on the road will be over the age of 65. With seniors becoming the fastest growing demographic in the U.S., finding ways to design technology to improve their comfort and safety is critical and may hold the key to enhancing the safe use of this technology for all drivers.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety partnered with researchers from the University of Utah to test the visual and cognitive demand created by the infotainment systems in six 2018 vehicles. Study participants in two age groups (21-36 and 55-75) were required to use voice commands, touch screens and other interactive technologies to make a call, send a text message, tune the radio, or program navigation, all while driving.

Researchers found that the technology created potentially unsafe distractions for all drivers, though this safety risk is more pronounced for older adults, who took

longer (4.7-8.6 seconds) to complete tasks, experienced slower response times, and increased visual distractions.

The complex design of the technology created increased visual and cognitive demand for older drivers. For example, some systems included multiple menus and cumbersome voice command functions that significantly reduced older drivers’ ability to easily complete seemingly simple tasks.

Specific design changes to in-vehicle infotainment systems, like improving voice-command technology, simplifying software menus, removing complex center console controls, and positioning system controls to allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road, would better meet the needs of older adults and make the systems safer for all drivers.

“This is a design problem, not an age problem,” said Jake Nelson, AAA director of traffic safety advocacy and research. “Designing systems to meet the safety and

comfort needs of aging drivers would benefit all of us today, and for years to come.”

Personal assessments about distraction caused by in-vehicle technologies are not always accurate. For example, in some cases drivers reported the use of the systems as less demanding even though researchers measured higher levels of demand or longer task completion times.

Whether you purchase a new vehicle, or rent one while traveling, AAA recommends that all drivers, especially older drivers, keep the following tips in mind:• Avoid interacting with in-vehicle

infotainment technology while driving except for legitimate emergencies.

• Practice using the voice command and touch screen functions when not driving to build comfort in case emergency use is required.

• Avoid vehicles that require use of a center console controller when using the infotainment system. These kinds of systems are especially distracting, and potentially dangerous.A total of 128 drivers ages 21-36 and

55-75 participated in the study of six 2018 model-year vehicles. The latest report is the seventh phase of distraction research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Visit AAA.com/distraction to learn more.

18 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

Learning to drive can be stressful for teens and parents. Teenagers have the highest crash rate of all drivers on the road. Parents can ease their anxiety and protect their kids by getting actively involved in the learning process.

Talking frequently about driving safety, creating a driving agreement, practicing driving together and leading by example can make a huge difference in helping your teen drive safer — especially when you’re not in the car.

Here are some tips to help keep your teen driver safe:

1) Talk about driving safety early and often. Start by teaching your kids what kinds of

driving behaviors are risky:• Speeding: Discuss the importance of

adhering to posted speed limits and knowing when to slow down for bad road or weather conditions.

• Distraction: A AAA study found that interacting with passengers and cell phones were the most frequent distractions for teen drivers.

• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Make sure your teen understands that impaired driving should never be an option.

• Poor visual scanning: Talk to your young driver about the importance of staying alert and constantly scanning the road for hazards.

2) Lay out the rules of the road. Research shows that teens report engaging

in less risky behavior when there is a formal agreement to establish driving boundaries. Visit teendriving.aaa.com for a sample agreement and other information to help parents and teens navigate the learning-to-drive process.

3) Prepare with practice. Plan to log at least 100 hours of driving

practice with your teen before letting them drive solo. Expose them to different situations while driving together — night and day, freeways and gravel roads, sunny days and wet weather — to increase their experience.

4) Set a good example. Show your teen that you take driving as

seriously as you expect them to. Avoid speeding and distractions. Always wear your

seat belt. Obey traffic laws. Never drive impaired or distracted.

5) Choose the right vehicle. A licensed teen’s first request is usually

to have his or her own car. To limit your teen’s driving in the beginning, say no. Research shows that teens who have a car reserved for their use are twice as likely to experience a crash as those who share a car with other family members. Many experts recommend parents wait until their teens have been licensed for at least six months before they get a hand in choosing a car for their use.

AAA encourages you to wait before getting your teen driver their own car, so you can gauge three key factors:• Readiness: Has your teen demonstrated

safe, responsible driving behavior? Make sure you have a parent-teen driving agreement in place and your teen has been driving successfully without you before handing over the keys.

• Finances: Can you and your teen afford the cost of a car, insurance, gas and maintenance? Have you established who will pay for the car? Take time in choosing a car that’s safe and that fits your family budget.

• Involvement: Before you make a purchase, evaluate whether your teen is ready to own, operate and maintain a car. Involving your teen in choosing a car can be a great learning experience regarding costs and responsibilities of vehicle ownership.

Some circumstances, however, may make the no-car rule impractical. If you’ve decided that your teen needs a car, here are some useful tips to help you and your teen make a car-buying decision you both can live with.

Safety• Check safety ratings from the National

Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

• Choose a newer mid-size sedan with the following safety features:

- Antilock braking system (ABS)- Daytime running lights- Electronic stability control- Side airbags- Adjustable/lockable head restraints

• Look for a car similar in weight, power and size to what you use for practice driving — or plan extra practice hours with the new car.

Reliability• Look for a warranty.• Check the vehicle history and maintenance

records.• Conduct a pre-purchase inspection.• Avoid cars with excessive mileage.

Affordability• Research insurance costs.• Don’t pay more than you can afford.• Weigh pros and cons of older vehicles.• Factor in gas mileage.

For more information about keeping your teen driver safe behind the wheel, visit teendriving.aaa.com.

The freedom to spend online shouldn’t mean compromising your personal or financial information. In a time when data breaches are making headlines, and cyber theft is a major threat, it’s important to keep your primary accounts and personal information out of harm’s way.

While it’s easy to pay with plastic, choosing a secure card — like a reloadable prepaid card — will eliminate worry and limit exposure to potential fraud.

The popularity of prepaid continues to grow as consumers have experienced the benefits of security and convenience by adding this card to their wallet. Reloadable prepaid cards are not linked to a bank or credit account, so finances and personal information are protected against virtual spending risks. Cardholders set the amount available to spend and reload funds when necessary. Using prepaid can help with budgeting and prevent overspending since there is no borrowing money or running up debt. Cardholders have control of how much they choose to spend and at what intervals.

Those who want ultimate peace of mind choose prepaid cards with chip-and-PIN

technology and the backing of major payment networks, such as Visa®. Prepaid can be used anywhere the major network is accepted. If a card is lost or stolen, some cards even offer emergency services, like cash and card replacement.

Many prepaid cards offer free and simple ways to access and manage account information. Popular card management tools include online account access and smartphone apps to monitor card balance and transaction activity — anytime, anywhere. Thousands of retailers offer the ability to reload prepaid cards with cash, check or debit card. It’s also possible to automate the reloading process with direct deposit.

Prepaid is an ideal financial solution for the entire family. Neither a bank account nor credit check are required to get a card. Online payments and shopping have become mainstream, and with the amount of fraud on the rise, it’s important to choose a payment solution that delivers all-around protection for every level of spending.

Fraud and theft aren’t just exclusive to online — it can happen anywhere. Start giving yourself the freedom to spend with a

22 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

Summer’s over and kids are back in school, but many people are making plans for at least one more getaway this fall, before the arrival of another busy holiday season. According to a recent survey from AAA, more than one in four Americans (28 percent) expect to take a vacation this year between Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

In fact, Americans say the top benefits of taking a fall trip include:• Fewer crowds and children (68 percent)• Weather that is more favorable

(63 percent) • The opportunity to find better value for

the cost of their trip (55 percent) Road trips are the preferred activity for fall

travelers, with 62 percent of those planning a vacation intending to pack up their cars and hit the road. Thanks to milder weather, outdoor events such as fall festivals and visits to national and state parks are particularly popular with travelers this time of year. Twenty-six percent of those who are planning a fall vacation will take a trip to view fall foliage, a favorite pastime from the northeast

and New England, to the mountains of North Carolina and Colorado.

The majority of fall travelers will stay within the United States, with Orlando, southern California, Hawaii and New York the most popular domestic travel destinations, based on AAA Travel bookings. Approximately one-third of fall travelers are planning an international vacation, with European destinations including Rome and London especially popular this time of year. AAA predicts that this year’s top fall destinations (based on historical AAA Travel booking data) include:

• Orlando, Florida• Rome, Italy• Anaheim, California• Honolulu, Hawaii• New York City• Las Vegas, Nevada• London, England• Dublin, Ireland• Boston, Massachusetts• Cancun, Mexico

Before setting out on a fall getaway, travelers should contact their local AAA office for the expert advice of a trusted travel advisor who can provide personalized service and in-depth destination knowledge to create a memorable vacation experience.
