Top Health And Safety Award For Isle of Wight College

Jenny Webb, Health & Safety and Campus Manager, was presented with a special award by Mr Steve Green from the Association of Colleges for the high quality of the college’s health and safety maintenance database and procedures .

The database enables the

college to double-check, be alerted to requirements, keep track of requirements progress and confirm when carried out. This ensures all health and safety work is carried out in a timely fashion to meet the PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) regulations set out by the Health and Safety Executive.

Rachael is preparing for a career as a Level 3 Practitioner in a baby room, Shannon is excited about working with children in pre-schools and Amber is consulting with college careers advisors about future opportunities.

“Studying at the college on the Level 3 childcare programme means working as a team to help each other. We are treated like an adult here, tutors are known by their first name and learners are encouraged to pursue their goals and aspirations with expert support.” “In our placements we work across loads of different age groups which helps us think about where we want to go next. We chose college because it is tailored to suit our professional development and career choices. We didn’t just choose the course because we like playing with children’s toys (although we do), but because we want to have a positive impact on children.”

What Is It like Studying Child Care At The Isle of Wight College?

Shannon, Rachael and Amber are Isle of Wight college childcare students about to embark upon their second year of the Level 3 programme.

Adrian Trill (Database Developer), Steve Green (AoC), Jenny Web (Health & Safety and Campus Manager), Steve Smith (JTL Training – sponsor of the award) and Pete Gallop (Head of Technical Developments)

NEW Futsal Academy The new Futsal Arena is now ready and looking good. It is situated in Manners View which is adjacent to college campus but accessible from River Way, Newport. The sport flooring that has been installed is an amazing multi-sport system and it will also cater for basketball, roller derby and many other sports. Members of the public will have access to leagues, tournaments and pitch hires as well as kids' parties, after school clubs and holiday camps. The state-of-the-art arena model includes the same flooring used by FIFA in their Futsal World Cup, as well as electronic scoreboards and viewing areas all housed within a vibrant urban feel. Futsal courses are sport and work-skills study programmes which includes employability skills and careers advice, as well as being the first programme of its kind in the UK to feature Futsal as an enrichment. This involves four hours of training per week, which is assisted with the inclusion of the world's first dedicated Futsal coaching syllabus. The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is a national qualification which is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels. This creates multiple career progression pathways including employment within the rapidly expanding Sport & Active Leisure industry as well as Higher Education and international Futsal scholarships.

Furthermore, the courses are delivered using @Futsal Group's bespoke virtual learning platform, called 'Inspire'. This

allows students to work remotely on electronic devices, whilst having online access to the very latest study content and tutor assessment. The blended approach to learning is specifically tailored towards contemporary study patterns and is designed to provide both students and tutors with as much support as possible.

Alex’s Articles To Be Published in National Educational Journal

A series of three articles written by Alex Sabine, higher education lecturer working at the Isle of Wight College, are being published in the September, October and November issues of Early Years Educator magazine. Alex was commissioned to write the articles having pitched a series of ideas to the editor of the academic journal at a conference in June. The first article addresses the place of therapeutic approaches in early years education, building on Alex’s experiences as an Early Years Professional at The Playroom in Ventnor and a personal interest in the subject. The two subsequent articles address the topics of creative approaches in early years education and effective leadership strategies.

Alex Sabine Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies

Alex currently co-ordinates Chichester University’s Foundation Degree in Early childhood Studies at The Isle of Wight College, supporting under-graduates wishing to pursue a career in childcare and education. As a lecturer in the Childhood Studies department at the college, Alex teaches on a range of courses from Level 1 through to degree level. Already an English BA graduate, Alex is currently completing a Psychology BSc and a post-graduate teaching qualification in higher education, as well as the college’s own Forest School Level 3 course. Alex says “I have always been a keen researcher and teaching at the college has given me the confidence to publish in academic journals. I hope that my students will also feel inspired to redraft some of their essays for publication!” College To Host Exhibition Of Brannon Collection

The Isle of Wight College will be hosting Mr Ken Hicks’ collection of 200 Brannon engravings in October. The collection, which took Mr Hicks over 30 year to amass, includes some rare and very interesting examples. More information coming soon.

Keeping Our Learners Happy No matter what our students are studying they all expect easy access to the wired and wireless networks for their smartphones, tablets and laptops and need to connect to the network from anywhere and anytime. During peak times a couple of thousand devices connect to the network.

Whatever the time or day, students and staff, and faculty expect the network to deliver consistent and continuous high performance. The College is pleased to announce that it now uses Brocade wired and Aruba wireless networks to supply a scalable network supply. This means it is easy to add more switches when required and has quickly brought our new buildings online to keep our learners happy
