President’s Message Welcome back after a long, dry summer. Ready to have some fun and informative outings? We hope you’ll be pleased with the fall programs, described in this newsletter, planned by our always creative program co-chairs, Myra Yavitch and Carolyn Melvin. And then there’s the two Days Out excursions: a guided tour of the Annie Leibovitz exhibit at the Wexner Center and a tour of the Decorators Show House (information to come in the spring), arranged by Melinda Miller, Joyce Blackmore and Vicki Koogler. Mark your calendars… Do you have friends that might enjoy these events? Please consider inviting them to join us as members. As you know, our purpose is to foster understanding of the legal profession and to support law-related causes while enjoying the camaraderie that membership in the CBAA provides. We welcome new members and have included a form in this issue to simplify the application process. (Just cut it out, fill it out and send it to our membership chair with a $35 check. New members will receive a roster, monthly email updates and our newsletter.) More than any other recruiting tactic, personal referrals are the most successful. Just ask our hard-working Board members, they can all name the person that inspired them to join the CBAA (for me, it was my sister). Besides, wouldn’t it be great to attend these outings by carpooling with your friends Our annual fund-raising event in April, “Tastings at Twilight,” which raised money 6339 Phoenix Park Dr. Dublin, OH 43016 September 2012 Marcia Hogue, Publisher continued on page 2 UPCOMING EVENTS Sept. 20, 2012 10:00 a.m. All That Jazz Westin Columbus 310 South High Street Columbus, OH 43215 Join us for breakfast and catch up with your CBAA friends. for the Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) was a big success thanks to co-chairs Liz Ball, Marcia Hogue, Ellen Ahern, their committee members, and CBAA member Jodi and Stan Ross. Ellen and I had the opportunity to attend the graduation ceremony in the Statehouse Rotunda of the first class of graduates from the program. The appreciation expressed by the students was humbling. Hope Sharett, the Executive Director of LLI, reports that the funds raised from our event will be used to support LLI programming in Columbus, in particular for the cost of books and supplies, bus passes for students to attend classes at OSU and Capital, and a portion of the stipends that support their law student instructors. The Board bids a fond farewell to Roxanne Malek, past president and advisor, who worked tirelessly for our organization. Roxanne was most instrumental in securing funding to furnish the waiting room and to provide supplies for the Domestic Violence/Stalking Unit of the Columbus City Attorney’s Office. Thanks also to Lara Baker who served as new member co-chair and organized refreshments for the Law Day Naturalization Ceremony. Kim Bumgarner was a marvelous secretary but is stepping down for daytime employment. They will be missed, but we look forward to seeing them at our upcoming events.

With gratitude for your support,

Margaret Theibert, President

Tea and CoCo Couture The 2012 May Meeting was a delightful tea luncheon, style show and boutique. Fall Programs(Continued from page 1)

We are so lucky to have her returning this year, Margaret giving a great speech at “Tastings at Twilight”.

Commentary Award, FALSE JUSTICE examines the issue of wrongful criminal conviction and debunks eight myths about the American criminal justice system. In November, just in time for holiday shopping, we will visit the Hayley Gallery in New Albany. Open since 2007, the gallery showcases the original work of over 60 Ohio artists. Join us as Hayley talks about her vision for the gallery and the artists represented there. Westerville artist, Wendy Emery, will talk about her art and show us examples of the striking glass beads she makes and fashions into spectacular necklaces. Afterward, we will have lunch at ella, the adjoining restaurant, which features local ingredients in made-from-scratch dishes inspired by Contemporary American Cuisine.

The first “Tastings at Twilight” wine tasting fundraiser on Friday, April 20, was a big success. Over one hundred people including, CBAA, CBA & OSBA members, enjoyed tasting eight specially selected wines and food pairings, accompanied by the delightful music of Vernon Hairston. The silent auction and raffle items were very popular, along with the slumped wine bottle table decorations. The Four Seasons was a perfect setting for everyone to mingle and learn more about the Law and Leadership Institute, LLC. Hope Sharrett, director of LLI, inspired everyone with a presentation of the success and importance of this institution. Being a first time event, we are pleased to report it raised over $8000 for the LLI. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, money and items to make this such a worth while evening. Special thanks go to Marion Smithberger and the Columbus Bar Foundation for their support. With the positive response that was received from this event, at the August board meeting it was decided “Tastings at Twilight II” will take place next April, so make plans to come and invite your friends to this fun event. 2012 Law and Leadership Institute Leadership Reception Since the CBAA held a fundraiser in their honor we were invited to the 2012 Law and Leadership Institute Leadership Reception on June 14th in the Ohio Statehouse. The reception celebrated the first class of Columbus, Cleveland and Dayton LLI graduates. It also recognized special volunteer and supporters. The Keynote Speaker was Judge Algenon L. Marbley of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, Eastern Division. He encouraged the students to “become part of our great legal fraternity” and to “distinguish yourselves by being the best that you can be...Excellence is the great equalizer, excellence always takes care of itself.” President Margaret Theibert & “Tastings at Twilight” Co-Chair Ellen Ahern were both able to attend. After the funds are allocated from our fundraiser we hope to be recognized next year. Our funds will be used to support LLI programming in Columbus. There purpose is to prepare youth from underserved communities to compete at high academic levels through use of intense legal and educational programming as a tool for fostering vision, developing leadership skills, enforcing confidence, & facilitating the pursuit of higher education. Margaret & Ellen were very impressed with the students and encouraged that our donation will be used for a excellent program.
