President’s Message

Jack M. Woodside Club President

This month I want to talk about growing our membership. Members are the lifeblood of our club. Without them, over time, our beautiful facility and grounds could not be maintained and the quality service we provide would suffer. We’ve all read about or heard about the many clubs – locally and nationally -- struggling to maintain services in the midst of an unprecedented economic downturn. We don’t plan to join them anytime soon. But, with a current membership roster of 772, we’re large enough that we need to welcome several dozen new members every year – in every category – simply to remain even. So all of us are indebted to our membership committee, headed by Jason Challand, for its efforts finding and enrolling new members. We also owe our thanks to a small group of enthusiastic and committed ambassadors of the club who seem to sponsor new members year after year. The results are impressive. National statistics show that country clubs our size lost an average of 3.2 percent of their membership last year. I’m proud to report that as we near the end of our year, membership at Meridian Hills has grown by nearly one percent. We need to continue to buck the national trend if we want our club to thrive and to maintain its position as the premier full-service country club in central Indiana. You have a key role to play in these efforts by bringing potential new members to the attention of Lisa Strachota, who’s in charge of membership, to Jason Challand and to the Membership Committee. For the third consecutive year, the Board of Directors has authorized a fall dues waiver program for new golf and tennis members who join between September 1st and the end of the year. These new members will have three months without a dues payment, but will still have to pay their initiation, hawk project dues and any other club expenses. This program has been enthusiastically received since it was introduced. Tell your friends about it! In closing, let me personally thank all of you who have brought new members to our club. I appreciate your efforts and encourage you to continue. You are helping insure the future of what we all know is a special place.

As we wrap up another terrific 2010 season here at MHCC, it continues to amaze me how quickly the summer flies by. School is back in session (way too early if you ask me), the pool is closing shortly and tennis activity has slowed. Before we know it the holiday season will be upon us.

I would like to thank Social Chair Mike Semler and all of the committee members who participated this year on our Social Committee. At our upcoming meeting in October we will be brainstorming events for the 2011 season. We will continue our commitment to providing a variety of club events both for families and adults. As always, any suggestions you have regarding new events, please let us know. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending these great upcoming Fall events.

Friday September 10 Steak Dinner / Scotch and Cigar TastingSaturday September 25 Meridian Hills Princess BallA favorite event typically held each spring at Meridian Hills is our annual Father-Daughter Dance. The Meridian Hills Princess Ball has been a long standing tradition, and a great evening for fathers and grandfathers to spend a special night together with their special daughter(s) or grand daughter(s) age 4-10.

Saturday October 9 Meridian Hills Family Fall Festival A variety of food stations, a beer garden featuring specialty beers for the adults, hay rides, pumpkin patch, fire pits with s’mores, inflatables and numerous other activities for children and adults are planned. Live Blue Grass music for your listening pleasure and the “Boo-Riffic Show” for the little ones are also on tap for the evening. This event is open to all members and guests. Please call 255-2496 for reservations.

As I have mentioned in previous articles, we still have availability for private banquet space for your family or company holiday event. December is always the busiest month of the year for us, so prime space and dates are limited. Our product and services are superior to our competitors and are a significant value for our members. Please call our new Catering Coordinator, Kelly Letzler (860-1536) in the catering office to check availability and to make your arrangements.

Congratulations go out this year to our MHCC Swim Team for another great year. Our thanks to pool moms Holly Semler, Lynne Bir, and our Pool Manager Scott Fenstermaker and his staff who give their time and commitment to making the swim team the success that it is.

I would also like to thank Ludo Aaron, our Tennis Professional and his staff for their hard work and a great year. We had record turnouts this year for our junior programs with over 200 kids participating. Keep in mind that the fall season offers some great tennis weather.

Again, as we wrap up a busy season and begin plans for next year, any suggestions on how we may improve the quality of services that we provide are encouraged and appreciated.

Sincerely,Kevin

Meridian Hills Country Club has welcomed a tremendous number of new members this summer. With the weather becoming cooler and the kids back in school, the Membership Committee is taking into consideration that interest in membership usually slows this time of year. The Membership Committee and Board of Directors would therefore like to promote interest in the club by offering a Fall Dues Incentive. If you have a friend, family member or colleague who may have an interest in the club, please tell them about the Fall Dues Incentive. Anyone who applies and is accepted as a Golf or Tennis member, will not be charged for monthly dues for three months following their acceptance. New members will still be responsible for the initiation fee, hawk project dues, the quarterly service charge and any additional charges they incur in the club.

Please contact Lisa Strachota, Director of Membership, at (317) 860-1556 if you know someone interested in the club.

Tennis UpdateJUNiOR PROGRAM Thank you so much for participating in the junior program this year. I felt that this was our strongest program in a long time with over 200 kids and a great staff. We will continue to get better and try to improve the junior programming each and every year. We are now conducting after school programs for Aces, Junior Excellence and Academy kids. We will continue this into October, please call the pro shop for more details. Congratulations to all 12 and under boys who participated in the Open Clay Court Championships held at Meridian Hills. We had a 32 kid draw and a great showing attitude wise and score wise during the tourney. A special congrats to John Tuerk who reached the finals of the main draw and lost in a third set breaker.

Ludo Aaron Head Tennis Professional

WOMEN’S PROGRAM Congratulations to the 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 MHCC teams for a great season! We are still going strong and continuing with the ladies clinics on Monday, Wednesday’s and Friday’s, we will continue this through October. Most of the city clinics were a great success, bringing in over 100 participants. We had over 24 participants in the ladies club championships this year, this is the first of a kind in over 10 years. MEN’S PROGRAM We will be finishing up the men’s Monday night session in September. The men’s club championship had a record number of participants this year with 32 players who entered. PADDLE We are preparing for paddle tennis now and we look forward to a great season. I have bought a ton of the newest and greatest paddle attire and paddle racquets. We will begin the paddle session towards the end of October. If you are a first timer for paddle, please schedule a half hour lesson with myself around the beginning to middle of October. Then I will be able to place you in an appropriate group.

We hope to grow the ladies paddle program this year with the new and improved racquet facility we now have. There is no reason we cannot have as many ladies playing paddle as we have playing tennis. It will be addictive if you stick with it through a few weeks. PRO SHOP We will have no one at the tennis house full time now. I will give members the key code to get in to the pro shop for towels, warmth and bathrooms in the near future.

Labor Day Weekend – September 4th-6th, 2010

During Labor Day weekend, Meridian Hills Country Club will again participate in Patriot Golf Day, which was created to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation. The Folds of Honor provides post-secondary educational scholarships to the spouses

and children of service members disabled or killed as a result of their military service to our Great Nation. The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq.

Caddie Banquet / CookoutSaturday, September 25th, 2010

Afternoon, Exact Time TBA

Our Caddie roster will be invited out to the back patio for an end of season banquet and cookout on the afternoon of the 25th. This is our chance to reward these young men and women for their hard work and strong efforts. Our staff feels as if the 2010 season was a successful year, and a huge step in the right direction for our

caddie program’s future growth.

Without the support that you, the Meridian Hills Membership, has provided, these young people would not have grown and had the opportunities that they experienced. Thanks to all who took a caddie this year. The

more caddie loops we have, the better our caddies become.

For those of you who would like to contribute to the bonuses and expenses of the banquet, please see one of our staff members in the golf shop. Any donation is appreciated.

important September dates to mark:

From the Superintendent’s Desk Hopefully the Florida weather is past us. The cool season grasses have really taken a beating this season. Most cool season grasses start to have root failure anytime the soil temperatures get and stay above eighty degree’s. We have just finished a long stretch of soil temperatures well into the nineties causing plants to shut down. Most of these grasses are poa that are in the fairways, tees, and rough areas. We have been able to maintain the poa in the older greens through this excessive heat and humidity. I have received confirmation from two diagnostic labs that we have a bacterial wilt on our new greens. There is no chemical application that is labeled for bacterial wilt on turfgrass. This has not been a problem on golf courses since the early eighties. Most pathologists feel that the high amounts of precipitation early, followed by excessive temperatures, have created the perfect environment for the bacterium. The universities are saying the best course of action is to relieve as much stress as possible to the grass plants. This is why I have raised the mowing height and altered the mowing schedule. The best stress relief will come with a change in the weather. The bacterium needs a lot of heat and moisture to prevail. Some of the samples have been entered into a research study at Michigan State to try and identify the exact strain of bacteria that is infecting the plants. They have received samples from all over the lower Midwest, East Coast, and Carolina’s. These samples have also come in on all types of bent grass and poa. Currently we have begun to seed into these damaged areas on the new greens. I am using a spiker to push the seed into the damaged areas. This is the least invasive approach to over seeding. I will give this a couple of weeks to see if we get any germination. If this doesn’t work I will have to use aerification to open up these areas to create a seed bed. This will be a little more disruptive. I am hoping by then the temperatures will be mild enough that I can follow up the aerification with sand top dressing. If this doesn’t work I will look at harvesting sod from the chipping green to fill in and stabilize the larger areas. I am hoping that we will have success with each step along the way. Each of these steps should minimize the areas that would need to be sodded. Unfortunately there is no quick fix to this situation. As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,Jim Hess
