A new traditional calendar school year has begun! As summer things end and autumn

things begin, here are two challenges to consider. I hope everyone will "take on" at least one.

While our summer series Sowing Peace…Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace is nearly over, set aside time to consider how YOU will continue to sow peace this autumn. Could

you take time to get to know a neighbor? Or mentor a Saint Giles neighbor at Community Hope? Or sign up for one of our Habitat Build days? Could you send a card

to someone who is struggling or experiencing dis-ease? Or make eye contact with someone you don't know?

As we kick-off a new ministry year at Saint Giles, try something new! Come to Kickoff Sunday, September 13, to hear about opportunities for children, youth and adults. Or read your Lantern with attention to

ministries about which you don't know - choose one to attend - be intentional about growing your faith.

Peace, Katherine

NURSERY HELP NEEDED The St. Giles nursery still needs several more volunteers to help care for our

youngest children. The nursery coordinators have enacted a paging system, which will allow at least one volunteer to go to Sunday School or the Sanctuary, as appropriate, when nursery needs are light. We hope that with these changes, more people will consider volunteering for nursery duty in the future. Please contact Kathy Matthews if you are interested in volunteering for nursery duty.

SOUND BOARD VOLUNTEER NEEDED - If you are interested in helping out

with our sound board, please talk with Mark Evans or Ouida Myers.

October 4 - Pharmacists from Rite Aid will be providing FLU AND PNEUMONIA SHOTS for Saint Giles members in the Fellowship Hall after worship. Specific times TBD.

SOUND BOARD VOLUNTEER NEEDED - If you are interested in helping out with our sound board, please talk with Denise Stevenson.

announcements

To Katherine and the many friends and members of Saint Giles who helped me

celebrate my 90th birthday. What a great surprise and a great time!

- Sarah Miles Johnson

Mark your calendar for THURSDAY, SEPT 10 5:30 – 7:30. The fellowship ministry team has again booked the

Porchetta food truck for our kick-off meal. Various yummy pork sandwiches, a chicken-apple sausage sandwich

and a veggie sandwich, plus sides of rosemary potatoes, apple horseradish slaw and cucumber tomato salad will

be featured. Sandwiches are $7, $7.50 or $8 and sides are $2. All items can be done without bread to be gluten

free. Drinks will also be available. We are providing hot dogs from Porchetta and will give vouchers to the

neighborhood children so that they can order from the food truck. Weather permitting, we will set up in the

Youth Center parking lot and use the YC as well for ice cream, supplied by Fellowship. Peanut butter and jelly

sandwiches and fruit will also be provided. No sign up needed. Invite friends and neighbors!

All Church Progressive Dinner September 19, 5:30pm to 8pm

Let's kickoff our church year with an All Church Progressive Dinner. We will begin with

appetizers in the Fellowship hall and then draw names to decide where to go for dinner and

dessert. This should be a fun way to get to know some of your church family that you may not

know yet. Depending on interest, we can arrange childcare at church during the event.

If you are interested in attending, providing appetizers, hosting dinner, or hosting dessert,

contact Jennifer Gospodarek ([email protected]).

HABITAT “PRESBY BUILD” 2015: St Giles will again participate in the Habitat Faith Community Coalition Build. This year a “Presby Build” has been organized in which we will participate with other Presbyterian Churches as part of a Presbyterian coalition to build a home for a Habitat family. Many of the Presbyterian Churches in Wake County along with the Presbyterian Campus Ministry are participating. (This is in addition to the ongoing Apostles Build, Catholic Coalition and Methodist Coalition builds.)

Habitat plans to build six houses as part of the Faith Community Build this year. Two houses are already underway, and four more houses will be started this summer and fall. A dedication for the first two houses and the ground blessing for the remaining four is scheduled for August 22. Work days are being scheduled for the “Presby Build” teams in August through the end of the year.

The focus of organized teams will be for Saturday work

days, with additional opportunities for teams and/or individuals on Thursdays and Fridays.

St Giles will work the following Saturdays: Sept 12, Oct 10, Nov 14, and Dec 12. Additional days may be added in the future. Watch the Lantern and Messenger for additional info and dates.

Please contact Bob Lindsay or the church office to volunteer and receive information on signing up or for additional information.

WHEELS4HOPE: With the help of St. Giles,

Wheels4Hope continues to use donated cars to change lives. Please consider supporting Wheels4Hope and sharing that support with friends and neighbors.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!

Let's rally to 'Support Our Troops' September 13-20 by sending much needed items to a USO Center abroad (destination confidential at this time) and to the USO Center at the RDU Airport. Travel-size requests include: shaving cream, toothpaste, individually packaged toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lip balm, sun block, wet wipes, foot powder, feminine products, powdered drink products, etc. (Check out the Dollar Store for many of these items at a great price!) Donations can be dropped into the collection box located in the Narthex. The cost to ship a container of items is approximately $30. If you would like to make a donation to help cover these costs, please make a check payable to Realtor Foundation with USO Drive on the memo line. Hand the check to Denise Stevenson rather than dropping it in the offering plate. Thanks so much for your support!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, is our Sunday school kick off for Christian educational

ministries of all ages. After our fellowship hall festivities at 10 AM, our children will begin two fantastic faith adventures. We encourage parents to join them as you both

re-read these stories together!

JOY JOURNEYS: This Montessori-based way of learning and worship for young children

ages 3/4 through first grade offers the basic salvation stories in the tactile way young learners need. We begin with:

September 13: Orientation to the worship center in the Joy Journeys room after we enjoy singing with Miss Pat in the music room. September 20: The Good Shepherd story (Psalm 23) hearing that the Good Shepherd knows his sheep by name. September 27: The story of the Light, the beautifully visual way of connecting Jesus as our light. (John 8:12)

FAITH TREK: This rotation workshop learning opportunity offers multiple ways of learning

and responding to Bible stories and was written by the enthusiastic educators of St. Giles! In September, children from 2nd grade through 5th will learn how Saul’s radical conversion to follow Jesus resulted in his transformation to become the Apostle Paul. Children will learn:

September 13: Like Saul’s transformation to Paul, children will “discover” how some basic kitchen items can be transformed. (Acts 9:1-19) September 20: Children will be welcomed into the “home” of Ananias to hear his story of Paul’s conversion. ( Acts 9:10-19) September 27: Children will find the “mission possible’ in their journey with Jesus. (Acts 9:10-19)

Notes from Session

Received an update re: marriage equality. Re-affirmed Session's commitment to presenting multiple viewpoints, facilitating education across a spectrum of views and creating opportunities for all members and friends of Saint Giles to be engaged in open conversation.

Re-affirmed Session's commitment to exploring what it means to "be good neighbors" to the families, communities and businesses in and around Saint Giles Street and Oak Park Road. Katherine has invited approximately 45 business owners and service providers (whose places of employment are on Saint Giles Street, Oak Park Road, a limited portion of Glenwood Avenue and in Oak Park Shopping Center) to a coffee open house on September 10.

Approved the fall worship schedule: We will have two worship services (9am & 11am) beginning September 13th. We will have one worship service (11am) on select Sundays, noted in the fall worship schedule on Page 2.

Approved a new Sunday School curriculum for youth (grades 6-12) re:form. Provided feedback re: formats for the next pictorial directory (timetable TBD). Shared joys and concerns; prayed for and with the congregation we serve.

It’s that time of year again when we settle back into our academic year schedule. Beginning September 13, there will be opportunities to worship at 9:00 or 11:00 with Christian Education opportunities at 10. The worship schedule for

fall is included on page 2 and will be available in the Sanctuary so that you can make sure to show up at the right time.

It’s a good time to check out the options for sharing in worship preparation by joining the choir or contemporary music programs. If you play an instrument and wouldn’t mind sharing your talent occasionally during worship, we

would like to hear from you as well. Other opportunities to participate in worship include the Worship Ministry Team that supports the planning of worship, projectionists and sound board operators.

If you need more information about these opportunities, you may contact our music staff, participate in our Fall Kick Off event on September 13, or talk with me.

Come join the harvesting the seeds of peace from our Sow Peace Summer. ~ Ouida
